NEW YORK, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Jean-Claude Trichet, the president of the European Central Bank, called in New York on Monday for strengthening global governance amid the economic recovery process.The crisis showed that gaps in the system of global governance, in terms of both efficiency and legitimacy, have to be filled, Trichet said in a keynote speech at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.Global governance in the financial sphere has fared during the crisis, he pointed out. BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged reconstruction authorities to protect the fragile ecosystem and improve living conditions during their work in the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.Hui was speaking at a meeting held by the State Council on Friday in Beijing to evaluate a report on the reconstruction's impact on resources and the environment.A 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Yushu in the Himalayan northwest Qinghai Province on April 14, leaving at least 2,200 deaths.The State Council, or Cabinet, approved the report at the meeting and Hui said reconstruction planners should consider the impact of their projects on the ecosystem.The epicenter of the devastating quake was at the headwaters of three major rivers -- the Yangtze, the Yellow and the Lancang rivers -- that run through China and neighboring countries.The clearing of debris, selection of sites for new towns and development of other industries in the quake area should all prioritize environmental protection, and natural forests as well as vegetative cover should be protected and restored, Hui said.The government has pledged to finish reconstruction work within three years.

UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the UN Security Council to quickly respond to and take actions on Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza."China is shocked by Israel's attack on a multinational convoy carrying international aid to Gaza which resulted in heavy casualties," said Yang Tao, a counsellor of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, at the 15-nation council's emergency meeting."We condemn Israel's actions targeting humanitarian workers and civilians," he said. "We support a quick response by the Security Council and take necessary actions."Yang also expressed serious concern about the "grim" humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the Gaza Strip."We urge Israel immediately and fully implement Security Council resolution 1860, fully open border crossings, lift blockade on the Gaza Strip so as to allow unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and allow local people to achieve early recovery and restore a normal life," he added.The council was currently meeting behind closed doors to discuss the text of a draft presidential statement submitted by Turkey.

SEOUL, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit here, starting Friday, will strongly boost the friendly cooperative relationship between China and South Korea, Chinese ambassador Zhang Xinsen told Xinhua in a recent interview.Zhang said Wen's second official trip to South Korea after previously visiting in April 2007 would allow him to exchange views with South Korean leaders on further deepening the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries. He would also have extensive contacts with various sectors here, which would surely boost the bilateral ties and bear richer fruit in the future.The ambassador said, as good neighbors, China and South Korea had made joint efforts to achieve rapid and all-round development of the bilateral ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992. In 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao and his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak successfully exchanged visits and upgraded relations between the two sides to a strategic cooperative partnership.
