SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rancho Bernardo family's home has become a must-see experience for their neighbors. Inspired by Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, the Loveless family has created a walk-through Halloween event that has grown bigger and bigger each year. She has recreated many of the iconic characters from the popular ride, as well as adding other spooks and haunts. For creator Katherine Loveless, it brings her back to her childhood. "I grew up on a city street that had a lot of haunted houses like this, so I grew up with it," Loveless said.Loveless and her husband, Bernard, began work on this year's Loveless Manor in August. They have created panels, which serve as moveable walls to create a maze-like path that runs through their yard. The family put a lot of thought into how to adjust their plans for the pandemic.“Last year we did kind of a smaller, tight trail that went in and out the same gateway," Bernard said. "We knew that wasn’t an option and we needed to have the whole trail outside and have more space between groups.”Loveless Manor is only open Halloween night. Reservations are required, with only a handful still available as of Friday afternoon. 1180

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of San Diegans submitted their ballots early, largely because they got them early by mail. Now, state officials may make that permanent across California. The state sent the ballots to 22 million voters about a month before the election because of the Coronavirus pandemic, according to the Associated Press. In San Diego County, the Registrar of Voters says it got a record of more than 1.1 million early votes, about 60 percent of the electorate. State Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, says mailing ballots to all registered California voters should become standard. “As with everything, there is always room for improvement, and we will work with elections officials to learn and assess this system moving forward," she said. "But one outcome is already crystal clear – providing every voter with the ability to choose whether to vote from home or in person should be California’s new normal.”Still, there are questions. First, the state Department of Finance says it cost million to send ballots to the .6 million Californians who don't sign up for them, according to the AP. Still, the state could save money by not operating as many polling locations. Cat Kom, a Rancho Bernardo resident, used her mailed ballot as a rough draft, but voted in person election night per tradition. "If it were up to me I'd say why don't you mail it to people who want it mailed to then, and then for people that want to go to the polls, have that option. We'd probably save a lot of money doing that," Kom said. Tony Krvaric, who heads the San Diego Republican Party, expressed concern over fraud."It is indisputable that the only way to ensure a 100 percent fair election is in-person voting with an ID requirement, with voting by mail remaining an option for military members and those who literally physically won't be able to show up in person," he said in a statement. "It's time to put the integrity of our elections ahead of politics. Voters deserve no less."Any voter in California can request a mail-in ballot. Don Hotz, a University City resident, always votes by mail and expressed support for making the universal mailings to registered voters permanent."It's so convenient, and in my opinion, it's very accurate and it's very safe," he said, noting the mailed ballots increased turnout for both Democrats and Republicans. 2391

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new cancer screening method is promising to eliminate the need for painful biopsies and greatly reduce the cost of the procedure. It's part of a line of research known as liquid biopsy and the latest advancement is being ramped up for mass production by an entrepreneurial couple in Torrey Pines at the research firm, BioFluidica.  Among billions of blood cells, the company has developed a chip capable of finding a single abnormal cell afflicted with cancer or other diseases."It is probably the most sophisticated injection molding piece in this world," said molecular biologist Rolf Muller, as he holds up a thin, plastic chip about two inches square.First developed by researchers in North Carolina, the chip is injected with a small blood sample which can contain billions of individual cells. The blood passes through 150 tiny tunnels within the chip which are coated with antibodies. Those antibodies do their natural work of isolating the abnormal cells.Researchers can then identify them for any possible threat and treatment. The Mullers say the screenings have the potential to dramatically increase survival rates for cancer patients. And to eliminate the need for the often painful biopsies currently in use. They also envision the test becoming a normal part of standard blood screenings. The chip is currently in clinical trials. It could be available for general use within two years. 1432

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company is looking to capitalize on a new law that legalizes the growing of hemp in the United States. Medical Marijuana Inc., based in Sorrento Valley, already has a line of CBD products but has to import the raw hemp from outside the United States. That will soon change. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill. Inside the bi-partisan, 7 billion bill was a revision to the federal laws on hemp, which had largely outlawed commercial production since the 1930s. The bill also removed hemp from being classified as a schedule 1 drug, the DEA category for substances with “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” “We really think this is going to be a tremendous growth market over the next three to five years,” said Stuart Titus, president and CEO of Medical Marijuana Inc. Founded in 2009, the company has several lines of CBD-based products for both humans and animals. With the new laws, he says they hope to start using hemp grown in the United States for the products they sell here. 1081
