SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Months ago, it wasn't clear whether Chris Fatilua would ever walk again.The Madison High School graduate and Cal football recruit suffered a serious spinal cord injury while swimming in San Diego last June.But Friday night, under the stadium lights of Madison High, Fatilua was back on his feet once again.Fatilua and his family declined to speak on camera, but off camera, they told 10News reporter Lindsey Pe?a that his care continues after receiving care at a renowned spinal cord injury hospital in Colorado this summer.RELATED: 584

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday, community leaders demanded reforms following the release of body camera video showing San Diego police officers shooting a robbery suspect over the weekend.Monday, SDPD said he was in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.“I'm asking for SDPD to put an aggressive plan together to ensure that [with] any officer-involved shooting that within 48 hours to 72 hours a video from the body worn camera footage is released,” said Rev. Shane Harris with the People’s Alliance for Justice.Body camera video released on Sunday by SDPD shows the moment leading up to Saturday's shooting. Police said they were patrolling Downtown when they saw Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra in a red jumpsuit and recognized he was wanted for a robbery.From a street camera, Ibarra is seen reaching in his waistband and raising his arms toward officers. Under Ibarra, body camera footage shows what police said was a gun wrapped in a bandana.“They went in guns blazing and this is not the training that they have,” said community activist Tasha Williamson on Monday. She added that the police should have called for back-up before the confrontation.“People are saying he pointed the gun at the officer and we're simply saying how is that because the officer on video show him running sideways behind the suspect to a cover which was the vehicle,” she said.“They used verbal commands. They followed what their training is and they did an exceptional job,” said former SWAT commander and lethal force instructor Ray Shay when he spoke to ABC10 News on Sunday.“It's unfortunate the gentleman was shot but you'll see that the police officer- after shooting the suspect and getting him handcuffed- immediately calls for an ambulance and here are these two young officers doing CPR to try to save the life of the man who just tried to kill them,” he added.Activists are now urging SDPD to release videos of future shootings as quickly as they did they this time and to release videos before still images.“We want a whole perspective of a situation. Not a half-perspective,” added Harris.Harris also wants the DA’s Office to form a special unit to investigative police misconduct and officer shootings. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — North County residents have banded together to help a woman who was living in her van with hundreds of pet rats and nowhere to turn.Locals were first alerted to the woman's situation outside a Del Mar convenience store, where she works. Carla was recently living in her van with two pet rats after becoming homeless, neighbor Kimberly Jackson told 10News reporter Rachel Bianco. The two rats had babies and the situation grew out of hand. The rodents eventually totaled more than 300. The animals chewed through the wiring of the van, rendering it inoperable."Everywhere, there was not one place in the van where they had not gotten into, the wiring, the engine, they came and went from the engine area," San Diego Humane Society officer Danee Cook said. "She was extremely helpful during the entire process as well. She did love her pets, she just let it get out of hand and she became overwhelmed."Video of the rats scurrying across the van's dashboard surfaced on NextDoor, catching the attention of neighbors like Jackson. "She said, "are you here to ridicule me, like everybody else," Jackson told 10News. "I saw what was going on in there, and said, 'how can we help you?' There were like 300 rats in that van." That's when Jackson and other neighbors stepped in, helping Carla tow her van from the parking lot. The San Diego Humane Society then removed the rats, which are healthy and now up for adoption.The acts of kindness have gone even further to help Carla. Neighbors set up a GoFundMe account that has raised nearly ,000 for Carla. Another neighbor donated a car. They're also helping connect her to homelessness resources and housing."She's just a gentle, gentle person, nobody knew she was homeless," Jackson said. "She's contributing to society and she fell on hard times. Everybody can use a little help now and then." 1865

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach mother Sandy Algra says her number one job is keeping her child safe, something she wasn’t able to do a few months ago.Algra and her 3-year-old son were at Liberty Station Park when he was scratched by a dirty needle, sending him to the emergency room. Algra says he underwent an infectious disease consultation and will require HIV and Hepatitis C tests every six months.“Right now I’m trying to channel and redirect the anger that I feel about what happened to him, that I wasn’t able to keep him safe," said Algra.She's created a petition to designate San Diego’s playgrounds for children only; adults are only allowed if they’re accompanied by a child.Similar ordinances already exist in New York and Florida, people who violate them can face fines. "I think that most people can use common sense and understand that an adult is not meant to be living under a slide, or sitting on a swing doing drugs or otherwise, that's not what these playgrounds are designed for," said Algra. The petition has over 1,000 signatures and has garnered support from the Pacific Beach Planning Group and Pacific Beach Town Council.Algra plans to eventually bring the petition to San Diego City Council.
