Non-profit Duwara Consciousness is helping the homeless gain access to a hot shower.The non-profit uses its food trailer to feed the homeless. On average, they provide about 1,500 meals per week."Our distribution network currently runs as far as San Ysidro and as far north as Carlsbad," says Harisimran Khalsa.But as we continue to experience the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalsa says access to a hot shower was limited for those in need. This prompted her and partner, Davinder Singh, to move forward with their idea of a shower trailer."Hygiene access is just not as frequent. So you do end up coming down with more bugs, more viruses," says Khalsa. "We think that this is really a time when we have to focus on hygiene for our homeless population."The shower trailer contains seven individual stalls, including one that is ADA compliant."It's really critical for our guests that they have a secure environment in which to shower."Khalsa says about 20 people can use the shower per hour. The stalls are cleaned after each use following CDC guidelines.The trailer comes equipped with sinks for people to wash their hands, shave or brush their teeth. It also has laundry services. The non-profit partners with other organizations to provide space and water.Duwara Consciousness plans to launch the shower trailer on Friday officially, but so far, they say users have been grateful for a simple hot shower. 1525

(KGTV) - A new group of leaders has the California GOP ready to take on the 2020 elections and rebound from a disastrous 2018 cycle.Over the weekend, the GOP elected Jessica Patterson as their state-wide Chair. She's the first woman and first Latina to ever hold the top spot in the state party.They also elected a Taiwanese immigrant, Peter Kuo, as Vice-Chair. And the new Treasurer, Greg Gandrud, is openly gay.Analysts say that gives them a more diverse group of leaders that can reach out to more voters across the state.But newly elected Secretary Randy Berholtz, who lives in San Diego, says their election within the party had nothing to do with demographics."I think what the delegates did is pick the best person for each of the positions," Berholtz says. "It just so happens that the people were of different ethnicities and sexes and ages and everything else."Berholtz says he saw an energized party at the convention, ready to bounce back from 2018.In that election, Republicans lost 7 seats in the US House of Representatives. Loses in local legislative races also gave democrats a super-majority in the California House and Senate. Republicans only hold 19 or 80 seats in the House and 11 of 40 seats in the Senate.The election also continued a streak of no Republicans winning statewide office since 2006.Berholtz says a strong Republican party is a good thing for the state."California needs to have a good second party," he says. "If not, nobody's watching the party in power. And we want to tell the voters that we're watching."In the last election, Republicans only made up 24% of the registered voters. That put them behind Democrats and people who registered as "No Preference."Political analyst John Dadian says it could take as long as 10 years for the GOP to turn that around."The main strategy has to be to bring some of those, 'prefer not to state' voters back," says Dadian. "It's all in the messaging, because California isn't just a blue state, it's a deep-blue state."Berholtz says his party will use a focus on family, personal initiative and good government to turn the tide. He also says they'll look to a more grass roots campaign to try and elect leaders from the bottom-up."We're energized right now," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The owner of MetroFlex Gym in Oceanside said he is now in compliance with San Diego County's public health order after refusing to close his doors for months.Lou Uridel fought back against the closure orders of all gyms and fitness centers in California, saying he would lose the business he worked so hard to build if he closed his doors. Uridel also said he provides wellness services that don't fall under the order.Friday, Uridel received a letter from Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, to immediately close.The letter states that MetroFlex Gym was operating indoors in violation of state and county public health orders.Uridel quickly moved some fitness equipment on the sidewalk outside of his gym and is now getting a permit from the City of Oceanside to expand and build a more extensive outdoor gym.He said he would be closed down until later this week while he gets it all squared away, but some services inside will continue."We have nutrition supplement store, food pickup services," he explained.Before Dr. Wooten's letter was sent, Oceanside Police visited Uridel's gym a few times to try to gain voluntary compliance with the public health order.Uridel tells 10News he received positive feedback about his gym's cleanliness, and he went above and beyond to ensure the safety of employees and members."We hired a virologist, and they said the biggest things were capacity, social distancing, and airflow. So that's what we focused on," he said.Uridel said he purchased a high quality disinfecting spray gun for ,000 and bought six industrial-grade fans to circulate the air while leaving front and back doors open at his gym.He said the gym was disinfected every hour, equipment was moved to allow for social distancing, and capacity was limited to 20 percent."I've had 38,100 visits since May 8th, we have ten trainers here, and we've not had one outbreak," he said. "It's just like a nail in our back to be treated like an egregious violator. I've had death threats. I have people calling me a mass murderer, irresponsible and selfish; I don't see myself as selfish for trying to provide employment for ten trainers and staff."Uridel said had he followed the closure orders from the beginning and closed down his gym, he would lose the business he worked so hard to build."You can't keep throwing us on life support and expecting us to stay around," he said. For Benjamin Prado, "Deportation" is always on his mind. "We see a policy of terror," Prado said. As a community advocate for 'American Friends Service Committee,' he connects migrants with various services. He has worked with those who were arrested at the Zion Market ICE Raid in February 2019."Whether people have documents or not, people have the right to work, and people have the right to produce and create a meaningful life for themselves," Prado said. Saturday, President Trump disagreed saying, "Everybody that came into the country illegally will be brought out of the country very legally."So even when the President announced that he would delay the planned nationwide ICE Raids initially scheduled to begin Sunday, Prado's work remains the same. "We are on a permanent campaign of informing families what their rights are," Prado said. "What their constitutional rights are, ensuring that they know that they don't have to speak to immigration law-enforcement, that they don't have to open the door, that they should demand to see any form of warrants that they have, whether it be judicial or administrative warrants that ICE produces."In a Tweet Saturday, Gavin Newsom agreed saying, "When we talk about knowing your rights, 'no abras la puerta.'
