SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of San Diego's most iconic buildings is getting an upgrade for the city's 250th-anniversary celebration.The Junipero Serra Museum will have 0,000 worth of renovations done this summer. The work will focus mainly on the exterior, repairing cracked and deteriorating stucco on the walls and adding a fresh coat of paint."We needed to move forward and return this building to the way it looked in 1929 because it is an important icon to the San Diego Region," says San Diego History Center CEO Bill Lawrence."It will gleam just like it did in 1929 when 40,000 people came to this spot for the dedication."The museum was established 90 years ago on the spot believed to be where Junipero Serra set up Mission San Diego, the first European settlement in California, in 1769. Archaeological research now shows the museum is about 100 yards away from the original site.It's been more than a decade since any structural work was done on the building. New roof tiles were added in 2008.The History Center raised 0,000 from the board and other donors to get work started on the West side of the building. They're hoping the City and County can help them fund the remaining 0,000 to complete work on the East side and the North Tower.In addition to the exterior work, the museum will unveil a new welcoming exhibit. That's been in the works for about seven years and has cost million."If you think about 1769 to 2019, it's 250 years. That seems like a long time," says Museum Collections and Education Vice President Dr. Tina Zarpour. "But humans have been living here for 12,000 years."The new exhibit will feature the stories of the Kumeyaay Nation and their contributions to San Diego before Serra arrived. Zarpour says it's essential to include that story to get the full breadth of San Diego History."This is a very layered, complex site," she says. "It means different things to different people. So we want to bring all of that to light.""Understanding all of the aspects, the good history, the bad history, is part of the process of bringing to light the complexity, the richness and what we as a community need to understand," says Lawrence.Part of the restoration also includes building a fourth flag pole on the grounds. That will hold the flag of the Kumeyaay Nation.The first phase of the work will be done by July 16th, the day recognized as the actual 250th anniversary. The Employment Development Department reported Friday that from April to May, employers added 18,200 people to their payrolls. Still, the employment situation in San Diego County is dire. From May 2019 to May 2020, payroll employment is still down by 195,800 workers. "The positive thing is that the worst is behind us and we've seen month over month job growth so we're improving," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. "The negative spin is that we're improving but the situation is still bad."The hard-hit restaurant industry led the way with 9,100 new jobs, as coronavirus related restrictions began to lift, allowing in-house dining with reduced capacity.Eric Adler, who co-founded the Artisan Mexican restaurant Puesto, said this year has been particularly. Voters must be registered at least 15 days before an election. If they fail to meet this requirement, they can conditionally register and vote provisionally, according to the San Diego Registrar of Voters. Voting materials, including sample ballots, are mailed starting 29 days before an election. If you changed your name, moved, or want to switch political parties, you must re-register to vote with a new application. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One person is dead after being struck by an Amtrak train near the Sorrento Valley train station Saturday afternoon, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.Amtrak has called this a "trespasser incident." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating the death of a child at a Tierrasanta home Tuesday.San Diego Police responded to the 3100 Block of Minuteman St. just before 11 a.m. to reports of a four-month-old child not breathing. When paramedics arrived, they began CPR on the infant.First responders were not able to revive the child.Police do not suspect the death to be criminal in nature at this point. However, police said since they are still not sure what led to the baby's death, they are investigating.The child died in a home in a military housing neighborhood.  624
