BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed the importance of quality management, proper resettlement of people, environmental protection and preventing corruption in building the country's South-to-North Water Diversion Project.North China had long suffered from water shortages and the project is a strategic infrastructure goal that would benefit the Chinese people, Li told high-ranking government officials at a forum held Saturday in Nanyang, a city in central China's Henan Province.According to a design, a canal serving the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project will be in Nanyang City.Building the project concerns China's national economic and social development and the long-term development of the Chinese nation, said Li, also director of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Commission (SNWDPC) of the State Council.Further, the enormous complexity of the South-to North Water Diversion Project called for excellent coordination and organization in pushing forward the construction, he said.Li also stressed the importance of quality management in the project, saying quality control was the core task for building the project into a world-class one.Also, resettlement of people is a key issue in carrying forward the project, and efforts needed to be made to make sure that people are properly resettled and they have the capabilities to increase their wealth, he said.Additionally, Li said, during the process of building the project, more attention should be given to protecting water resources and preventing water pollution.He also called for strengthened supervision of the funding used for the project to prevent corruption and to punish those violating the law.The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of China, mainly the Yangtze, the country's longest river, to the country's arid northern part. FUZHOU, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Lionrock, the eighth of this year, made landfall on east China's Fujian Province early Thursday morning, local meteorologists said.The storm landed at Gulei Town of Zhangpu County at around 6:50 a.m. with a speed of 82.8 km per hour near its center.Under the impact of Lionrock, torrential rain was seen along the coast of Zhangzhou City, and the rain was the heaviest in Dongshan and Zhangpu counties.No casualties have been reported.Local meteorologists have warned residents of mudflows and landslides that might be triggered by the tropical storm.The meteorologists forecast that rainfalls would be up to 100 to 200 mm in Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Xiamen and Putian cities of Fujian from Thursday to Friday.By 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, 162,200 people in the province had been evacuated to safe places, and 50,703 fishing ships had been back to harbors.

VIENNA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The six-party talks is the fundamental way of solving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) directors meeting here Tuesday.From the long term perspective, the fundamental way of settling regional contradictions and disputes is through continuing to advance the six-party talks, achieving the conversion of the mechanism of armistice to peace, and finally establishing a security system of peace in Northeast Asia, said Hu Xiaodi, China' s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.To this end, China hopes that no matter how situation changes, parties concerned should fix their attention on the overall situation, exercise restraint, resume direct dialogues and talks at an early date, Hu said, adding all sides should make joint efforts to achieve an early resumption of the six-party talks, and continue to advance the process of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.Hu noted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia is still sensitive and complex, with the six-party talks stalled.The current situation once again shows that severe lack of mutual trust among parties concerned is the root cause of both frequent tensions in northeast Asia and difficulties for the six- party talks.
