TIANJIN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Executives from China's auto makers Sunday rejected an official warning that unchecked growth in the industry was leading to excess capacity and could harm the wider economy.Chen Bin, an official with the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, Saturday said excess auto capacity threatened sustainable economic development and must be "resolutely" stopped. But industry representatives and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) Sunday argued car makers were only trying to meet expected demand in the world's largest auto market.Dongfeng Automobile, a major Chinese auto manufacturer, had been running in top gear since last year, said Fan Zhong, a senior manager. "Our problem is not having enough capacity."Most entrepreneurs at the International Forum on Chinese Automobile Industry Development in Tianjin had similar views.Ford China was focusing on expanding capacity as demand kept rising, said CEO Robert Graziano. The overall capacity of China's auto industry might seem excessive, but the market had huge potential for restructuring and growth, said Hu Xinmin, honorary chairman of the CAAM.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed the importance of quality management, proper resettlement of people, environmental protection and preventing corruption in building the country's South-to-North Water Diversion Project.North China had long suffered from water shortages and the project is a strategic infrastructure goal that would benefit the Chinese people, Li told high-ranking government officials at a forum held Saturday in Nanyang, a city in central China's Henan Province.According to a design, a canal serving the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project will be in Nanyang City.Building the project concerns China's national economic and social development and the long-term development of the Chinese nation, said Li, also director of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Commission (SNWDPC) of the State Council.Further, the enormous complexity of the South-to North Water Diversion Project called for excellent coordination and organization in pushing forward the construction, he said.Li also stressed the importance of quality management in the project, saying quality control was the core task for building the project into a world-class one. Also, resettlement of people is a key issue in carrying forward the project, and efforts needed to be made to make sure that people are properly resettled and they have the capabilities to increase their wealth, he said.Additionally, Li said, during the process of building the project, more attention should be given to protecting water resources and preventing water pollution. He also called for strengthened supervision of the funding used for the project to prevent corruption and to punish those violating the law.The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of China, mainly the Yangtze, the country's longest river, to the country's arid northern part. It will consist of three routes: eastern, middle and western ones. The project started with construction of the eastern route in 2002.Up to now, both of the eastern and middle routes are already under construction. The western route, meant to replenish the Yellow River with water from the upper reaches of the Yangtze through tunnels in the high mountains of western China, is still at the planning stage.About 330,000 people in Hubei and Henan provinces will be relocated before the middle route is completed in 2014.

VIENNA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The six-party talks is the fundamental way of solving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) directors meeting here Tuesday. From the long term perspective, the fundamental way of settling regional contradictions and disputes is through continuing to advance the six-party talks, achieving the conversion of the mechanism of armistice to peace, and finally establishing a security system of peace in Northeast Asia, said Hu Xiaodi, China' s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna. To this end, China hopes that no matter how situation changes, parties concerned should fix their attention on the overall situation, exercise restraint, resume direct dialogues and talks at an early date, Hu said, adding all sides should make joint efforts to achieve an early resumption of the six-party talks, and continue to advance the process of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.Hu noted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia is still sensitive and complex, with the six-party talks stalled. The current situation once again shows that severe lack of mutual trust among parties concerned is the root cause of both frequent tensions in northeast Asia and difficulties for the six- party talks. Under such circumstances, the only way to gradually accumulate trust and seek to properly address concerns of each side in a balanced manner is through maintaining contacts, dialogues and frank communications, Hu said.Hu said all parties should give serious thoughts on how to change the situation and put the Korean Peninsula issue back on the track of dialogue and consultation at an early date.
