SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts from all over San Diego County honored our local veterans laid to rest at Greenwood Memorial Park on Saturday. They placed American flags at the gravesite of every fallen veteran at the cemetery. The event is done all over the country to teach the scouts about patriotism and community service. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With testing of potential COVID-19 vaccines speeding up and clinical trials underway, there are some who say they won’t be getting one once a vaccine is in production.Gwen Strickland said her son experienced a severe reaction to a common vaccine."It was something that had never crossed my mind until I witnessed it,” Strickland told ABC 10News.When Strickland hears talk of a potential coronavirus vaccine, she's skeptical the benefits outweigh the risks.RELATED: San Diego clinic to begin trials of coronavirus vaccine"I'd want to see some really long-term data that could guarantee it before I'd be comfortable injecting it into my body or my family," she said.As the pandemic continues on, the race to create a reliable vaccine pushes forward. Some companies are already in the later phases of their trials, including American biotech company Moderna.Moderna’s Phase 3 trial is being conducted at UC San Diego, under the supervision of principal investigator Dr. Stephen Spector.While earlier stages involved healthy people, these new patients will be those at higher risk of developing the disease or with underlying conditions."They are the people who can most benefit and we want to make sure if we have a vaccine it works in these individuals," said Spector.Spector said this particular trial will include 30,000 patients around the country.The size is designed to give researchers a better idea of how safe it could be in the larger population.He said one of the most frequent questions he gets is: Can I get coronavirus from the vaccine?"The answer is absolutely no, the vaccine does not contain the virus,” said Spector.While Dr. Spector and other health experts say a vaccine is the key to getting the virus under control, parents like Strickland say they won't be lining up to get injected. 1830

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Veterans looking for a job during the Coronavirus Pandemic are learning to use virtual job fairs to grow their careers."It's sometimes difficult, but overall it's been a positive experience," says Army Veteran Steven Padilla, who has been looking for a job since March."You can only do so much interacting. You can't shake hands. You can't wait in line for a conversation."Padilla says his job search has been more difficult since the Pandemic hit. Companies have stopped hiring or removed job postings.He's not alone in looking for a job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Veteran Unemployment skyrocketed during the Pandemic, peaking at 11.8% in April. That means more people competing for fewer positions.But RecruitMilitary.com, the Army's primary contractor for helping service members transition from the Army to civilian employment, says there are still plenty of jobs. They're hosting multiple virtual job fairs every week to help veterans find one."It's really just a way to dip your toes in the water and visiting a lot of companies," says Chris Stevens, the Vice President of RecruitMilitary.com.He says the company has gone from holding about 15 virtual job fairs each year to more than 130 planned for 2020."It's just like any other typical chat room," Stevens says. "Candidates and companies can go into private chats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Traffic was backed up throughout the day Monday in Clairemont after a crash involving several vehicles. The crash happened just before 1 p.m. on Balboa Avenue near Albertine Avenue. According to San Diego Police, a 59-year-old man driving west on Balboa Avenue hit a raised median and crossed into the eastbound lanes of traffic. Police say he then hit a Jeep Patriot, causing it to slam into a Honda Civic and a Jeep Cherokee. Police say the driver of the Jeep Patriot sustained a fractured femur and was taken to the hospital. Her passenger also complained of pain. No one else was injured. The 59-year-old driver of the Nissan Frontier was arrested for DUI drugs. 695

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When it comes to wrong-way crashes in San Diego County, 2018 is off to an unfortunate start.There have been numerous wrong-way vehicle crashes around the county nearly eight weeks into the new year, and authorities have not been able to pinpoint what exactly is causing an uptick in these types of crashes.According to Caltrans data, from 1995-2012, an average of 23 people died each year in wrong-way crashes on California roadways.San Diego had 13 wrong-way fatalities recorded in 2015 -- the last year Caltrans data was compiled for wrong-way crashes.In 2017, Caltrans launched a two-year pilot program in San Diego and Sacramento that focuses on ways to not only prevent wrong-way crashes but to also alert authorities in the event a vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction.As part of the test program, Caltrans has deployed reflective pavement markings on off-ramps and signs with flashing lights that turn on if a wrong-way vehicle is detected.Caltrans has not yet provided data collected from the program to determine the protective measures' effectiveness.Here's a look at wrong-way crashes on San Diego County roadways in the past 12 months.Feb. 20, 2018: Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after wrong-way crash-- A driver was hospitalized -- and also arrested -- after police said he was driving in the wrong direction on Fairmount Ave. when he hit another vehicle.
