SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a way to celebrate military members and their families this weekend, San Diego County Animal Services will waive adoption fees.From May 24 to 26, the department will take part in the Animals for Armed Forces adoption event to offer the free adoptions for cats, dogs, and rabbits. Active duty, reserve, and veterans from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard and their immediate family are eligible for the promotion.RELATED: Memorial Day ceremonies and events in San DiegoCounty Animal Services’ Carlsbad and Bonita locations will also include free vaccinations, spay or neuter, a microchip, licensing, and a veterinary exam with adoptions.“This is the County’s way of saying thank you for all the sacrifices the military and their families make to keep us safe,” County Animal Services Director Dan DeSousa said. “And sometimes these adoptions have the effect of the two rescuing each other.”Those interested in adopting a pet must show photo identification and at least one of the following forms of ID: A military ID, Dependent ID, DD-214 and driver’s license or NGB Form 22.The adoption event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day of the event. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Beaches in San Diego are expected to be packed for the Fourth of July weekend as other nearby counties shut down their beaches over coronavirus concerns.Local law enforcement agencies are prepared for the influx in beachgoers, but many are hoping and wondering if people will follow San Diego County’s facial covering and social distancing requirements.On Friday, ABC 10News crews observed visitors at Mission Beach keeping their distance from each other and most of them wearing facial coverings.Many visitors came to the beach early to secure spots for what will likely be a busy weekend.The Cotus family, visiting San Diego from Arizona, heard about Gov. Gavin Newsom closing beaches where coronavirus numbers are rising. But the family took the chance that San Diego beaches would stay open.“We figured this morning we got the kids up. OK, let’s take a chance; either we can get to the beach or we can’t. If not, there’s a pool at the hotel,” Edward Cotus said.Law enforcement agencies said they will be out this weekend reminding people about the rules. However, they say it will be up to the public to follow them.The Cotus family said they understand why people don’t like wearing the face coverings, but they believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part in controlling the spread of this virus.“We all have to be responsible and just try to really implement social distancing on our own. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As President Donald Trump threatens to shutdown the U.S.-Mexico Border, San Diego leaders are in Mexico City to strengthen economic ties and talk binational business.Five mayors and nearly 100 elected officials, business and community leaders from San Diego and Baja California left for Mexico Sunday for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 14th annual Binational Delegation to Mexico City.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the top two issues up for discussion are the continuing Mexican sewage runoff problems that impact our beaches and the free trade relationship between the U.S. and Mexico.Monday, Mexican officials said 70 percent of trade with the U.S. is by trucks, and the Mexican Government is ready to collaborate with the U.S. to ensure border safety and that trade flows efficiently.“Free trade is incredibly important to our region here in San Diego,” said Faulconer. "We have over 100,000 jobs that are dependent upon trade with Mexico.”Faulconer said the goal is to create a safe, secure and functioning border. He is also calling for the approval of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.The Chamber also said advancing USMCA is a key priority of this week's meeting.Monday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico trade relationship, including the border, immigration and economic development. On Tuesday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico water policy.Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina has been pushing for the Mexican government to rebuild basic sewage infrastructure. The sewage runoff from the Tijuana River Valley flows into some of our local beaches, shutting them down for days and sometimes even months.Dedina said he hopes to come back to San Diego with new solutions to resolve the ongoing, decades-old issue.“Will be really pressing really hard with high-level officials to really move this forward so we can continue to have clean beaches,” he said Sunday.The leaders will wrap up their trip to Mexico on Wednesday. 2016

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Communities along San Diego's coast have seen an increase in graffiti and tagging as the weather warms up and people flock to the beaches.Most recently, a wall along the sand in Solana Beach was tagged twice, frustrating people who surf and swim nearby."It's a public beach, there's no reason someone should be desecrating it like that," says Andres Gomez, who surfs in Solana Beach regularly. "I wish everyone would be more respectful of the space that we share.""I just think of my tax dollars being wasted," says Solana Beach resident Darla Dressler. "Somebody's gotta come paint it. So either the HOA's paying it or the city's paying it."Earlier in May, 10News reported on a home in Pacific Beach that was hit by graffiti. That's nearly a third of all the reports in 2019 so far.It's also well above the average month in 2018, which had 19,541 total reports, or about 1,628 per month.While the city tries to respond to each complaint, several local community groups have taken it upon themselves to clean up the tags. The Pacific Beach Town Council hosts regular graffiti clean up days. Their event in May removed more than 700 tags according to a Facebook post. 1579
