(AP) — California police say a homeless woman sleeping in a cardboard box was struck and killed by heavy machinery operated by a road crew clearing a homeless camp.The Modesto Bee reported Wednesday that 33-year-old Shannon Marie Bigley was killed Aug. 1 in a grassy field alongside a highway where a homeless camp was built.Modesto police say the incident occurred while a California Department of Transportation crew was attempting to clear the encampment about 90 miles east of San Francisco. Details on the machinery was not disclosed.State officials four months ago rejected a union grievance filed by workers who object to clearing homeless encampments. More than 20 fire departments are working to burn down a Beaver Dam, Wisconsin apartment building where a deadly explosion happened last week. City officials said dangerous chemicals inside of the structure made it too dangerous for residents to re-enter, and that burning the building to the ground is the safest way to prevent any injuries."We have carefully reviewed this, and we firmly believe this is the action that needs to be taken, unfortunately," said Beaver Dam Fire Chief Alan Mannel at a Wednesday evening news conference. The five, neighboring buildings in the apartment complex were evacuated ahead of Thursday's controlled burn. Streets in the area were shut down at 9 a.m.Around 10 o'clock, firefighters lit both ends of the apartment building at 109 Knaup Dr. on fire and allowed it to burn towards the middle. Large shipping containers were placed around building 109 to help contain the heat and flames. Mannel said staffing of the fire trucks surrounding the building is minimal, and that firefighters only plan to step in and control the flames if they threatened any of the nearby structures. Police on Wednesday identified 28-year old Benjamin Morrow as the man killed in last Monday's blast. According to authorities, Morrow lived in one of the units.Beaver Dam Police Chief John Kreuziger said investigators continue to suspect that Morrow was building a bomb inside of the apartment. According to his obituary, Morrow worked in the quality department at Richelieu Foods in Beaver Dam for almost a year. His obituary describes him as "a hard worker" who "had a good rapport with all those around him."Police and the FBI continue to investigate why Morrow was in possession of the volatile chemicals that required them to eventually burn the building down.Kreuziger on Wednesday declined to comment on what the chemicals inside of the apartment were. City officials said the plan is for evacuated residents to be allowed back into their homes this evening. That's also when they plan to re-open nearby streets. The EPA has placed air monitoring devices in the area. Mannel said the EPA can also test the air in individual apartments within the evacuation zone at the request of residents. 2336

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 65th Nashville Christmas Parade Organizers have announced that Kid Rock will no longer serve as the Grand Marshal of the Nashville Christmas Parade. The organizers have stated that they believe the Grand Marshal should "personify the spirit of Nashville" and therefore, have invited James Shaw Jr. to hold this honor. Shaw became a hero in the community after stopping a shooting at a local Waffle House earlier this year. This news came after Nashville Mayor David Briley announced he may not participate in the city’s Christmas parade if Kid Rock remained the Grand Marshal. The Mayor’s Office issued a statement Friday, saying “if Kid Rock is still the grand marshal tomorrow, the Mayor is inclined not to participate.” Briley’s statement came just hours after Kid Rock’s appearance on “Fox & Friends,” in which he called Joy Behar a “b----.” “God forbid you say something a little bit wrong, you’re a racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, this that and the other. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - A U.S. Postal Service deliveryman was pinned against his mail van in National City Thursday when a driver having a seizure struck him, witnesses said.Surveillance video shows the sedan crash into the USPS worker as he stood at the back of his van at 2907 Highland Ave. Witnesses jumped into the vehicle to back it up and stop the engine. The postal worker fell to the ground as passersby called for help. National City Police officers arrived and put a tourniquet on one of the postal worker’s legs. He was alert but suffering major injuries, firefighters said. The man was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center.The driver who struck the postal workers has a history of seizures, National City firefighters said. He was also taken to a hospital for evaluation. 798
