MOSCOW, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A new crew which are to depart for the International Space Station (ISS) at the end of March have successfully passed the pre-flight tests, the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) announced on Friday.At a press conference held at Russia's Cosmonauts Training Center, a Roscosmos spokesman said two Russian cosmonauts Andrei Borisenko and Alexander Samokutyaev and a U.S. astronaut Ronald Garn will leave for the ISS by a Russian Soyuz-TM-21 spacecraft on March 30.On March 17, the three crew members and their backup crew members, Anton Shkaplerov, Anatoly Ivanishin and Daniel Burbank, will make their final preparation for the space trip in the Baikonur space site in Kazakhstan.According to the Roscosmos, the three main crew members are expected to spend 170 days in the ISS. During the period, they will receive two U.S. space shuttles and three Russian Progress cargo ships and conduct a spacewalk.The agency also revealed the Soyuz-TM-21 spacecraft scheduled for the ISS was named as Gagarin.The year of 2011 was announced as Russia's Space Year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first Russian manned space flight carrying cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in 1961 for a 90-minute flight.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The uranium subsidiary of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) has said it is developing two large mines in the mainland.The two mines will be located in south China's Guangdong province and northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to Saturday's China Daily.The move is likely to add as much as 1,000 tonnes to the country's annual production capacity of the nuclear fuel."The two mines are expected to start operation in 2013, each with an annual production capacity of no more than 500 tonnes," the newspaper quoted Zhou Zhenxing, chairman of CGNPG Uranium Resources Co (CGNPG-URC) as saying.

WELLINGTON, May 13 (Xinhua) -- While it's long been known that a little sunshine can spread happiness, researchers in New Zealand have found that it can also save the lives of pneumonia patients.Medical scientists have found that vitamin D, which is absorbed through the skin and produced with exposure to sunlight, is a major factor in the survival rate of pneumonia patients.Researchers at Waikato University collaborated with doctors at Waikato Hospital, both Hamilton-based institutions, to study blood samples of 112 patients admitted to the hospital with pneumonia during the winter.They found that those with severe vitamin D deficiency 17 of the patients were more likely to die within a month, compared with patients with normal or slightly low vitamin D levels.Dr Bob Hancox, of the hospital's department of respiratory medicine, said five of the 17 died, a 29-percent mortality rate, compared with four deaths among the 95 patients with higher vitamin D levels, a 4-percent mortality rate."The analysis confirmed that the difference in mortality rates between the two groups was very unlikely to be due to chance," Hancox told Xinhua.Vitamin D deficiency was a concern around the world, Hancox said."Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D, so it tends to be a winter problem in temperate climates when people spend a lot of time indoors. But it occurs in all countries and vitamin D deficiency is believed to be a major problem worldwide."There is accumulating evidence that we need vitamin D to help fight infections, such as pneumonia as we have shown, as well as improve bone health," he told Xinhua."What is not yet clear is whether we can do anything about it. We don't know whether treating people with vitamin D supplements would help to prevent or treat respiratory infections. This is what we need to find out now."Dr Ray Cursons, of the Biological Sciences department at Waikato University, said patient age, sex, additional health conditions, and other prognostic factors did not affect the research outcome, although researchers still could not establish a causal link between vitamin D deficiency and mortality in the patients.Waikato Hospital D respiratory specialist Dr Noel Karalus said it was not yet known whether giving patients vitamin D supplements after their admission to hospital with respiratory tract infections would alter outcomes."It may transpire that vitamin D helps us avoid infection rather than cure it once established."Cursons said the best source of vitamin D was sunlight as dietary sources such as fatty fish and cod liver oil did not contain enough vitamin D."There is still some controversy regarding the optimal daily allowance of vitamin D. How much we absorb through the skin depends on sun exposure, skin type and geographical latitude. M ori and Pacific Islanders absorb less because of their darker skin, and people in colder climates also have lower levels of vitamin D. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua)-- China said late Saturday that members of the United Nations should work for a broadly-based consensus on the reform of the UN Security Council.Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks in response to a relevant question.Media reports had it that a recently-released declaration by some countries said most of UN member nations supported enlarging the council with new permanent and non-permanent members, and insisted tangible results be achieved in this regard during the Current Session of the UN General Assembly.Ma said China held that UN member nations should seek for a package of solutions for the reform, on the basis of broad and democratic consultation among member nations to accommodate interests and concerns of all parties.He said though some positive progress had been made since inter-government negotiations regarding the reform of the UN Security Council were launched, there were still serious differences within all parties over certain important issues about the reform.China advocated that the more differences the member countries had on the reform, the more necessary for UN member nations to enhance dialogue and consultation, he said."Experience has proven that presetting results for the reform or forcing premature reform plans will not only undermine the unity of UN member nations, but also harm the reform process, which will not be in line with any party's interests," he said.China is ready to maintain contact with all relevant parties, and make joint efforts with other member nations to push forward the reform in a way which can be conducive to safeguarding the overall interests of UN and the unity of the member nations, said Ma.
