San Diego (KGTV)- For weeks, the pandemic left nursing students at CSU San Marcos in limbo when it came to completing their graduation requirements. Now, thanks to the county, the students can get their clinical hours.When the pandemic hit in March, nursing students were forced out of public health facilities to get their hands-on experience for their classes.“We didn’t know when we were going to go back, and it was halfway through the spring semester,” says nursing student Winter Minton.Minton will be graduating from CSU San Marcos in the spring.The nursing student says for weeks, students were unsure about how they would obtain their clinical hours. A total of 135 hours are needed for two classes.“When we were ready to go back, the county was not willing, ready to have nursing students on site at all,” says Course Coordinator Madelyn Lewis.In August, the county opened a COVID-19 testing clinic on campus and allowed nursing students to work on-site. The students assist patients with self-administered COVID tests while wearing full protective gear.“Not only does it benefit us, but it benefits so many people,” says Minton. “I heard people driving all the way down from Irvine or Fullerton just to get the exam done.”Minton says the walk-in clinic sees more than 300 patients a day.The testing site is open to the public seven days a week. 1363

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Dreamers across San Diego have a week's worth of rallies, protests and programs planned on Community College Campuses.Students under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, say it's time to come out of the shadows on campus and show their fellow students, teachers and administrators the role they play."DACA students are here, Dreamers are here, and they’re here to stay," says Miguel Mellado, a DACA student at Southwestern College."We have to really stand up and say we’re here, we’re proud, we’re working hard, and we deserve more," he says.Mellado's parents brought him to America when he was eight years old. He didn't learn he was undocumented until middle school. He says it left him feeling isolated.His desire to find community, and help others do the same, is what led him to help organize this week's "Undocumented Students Week of Action."Events begin Monday at City College, Mesa College, Miramar College and Southwestern College. The San Diego Community College District has already announced their support of the programs.An estimated 1,000 undocumented students are enrolled at those colleges."DACA recipients are some of our hardest working and brightest students, and it is our duty to advocate on their behalf," said San Diego Mesa College President Pamela Luster."Clearly, these deserving students who came to the U.S. as children, who have not been convicted of any crimes and who are earnestly seeking an education to improve their lives, are tremendous assets to our community."But that support has upset some people in San Diego who feel DACA students take opportunities and resources away from other students.Raul Rodriguez, Jr., the California Coordinator for America First Latinos, told 10News that taxpayer-funded schools shouldn't be supporting events like this since the students were brought into the country illegally.Meanwhile, the DACA Act is tied up in courts, after President Trump announced an end to the act in September of 2017. Mellado says he and his fellow Dreamers shouldn't wait for the government to solve the issue."I don’t believe policy helps that much," he says. (KGTV) -- Mexican authorities are investigating the discovery of a tunnel near the Otay Mesa border in San Diego, U.S. officials said.Department of Homeland Security officials confirmed the discovery Thursday morning but did not provide any further details.“At this time, U.S. authorities are aware of a tunnel discovered by Mexican law enforcement officials near the Otay Mesa border. However, we have not yet determined whether the tunnel entered into the U.S.," said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman with the DHS.All that is known at this time is that the tunnel is in Mexican territory, south of Otay Mesa which stretches east of 805 and south of the 905 freeways.10News station partner Televisa reports that the tunnel does cross the border. San Diego (KGTV)- Tenants in Oak Park say they soon won't be able to pay their rent if it continues to go up. Some have seen two increases this year, and they're already living on a fixed income. Tenants held a rally Thursday morning and are pushing for a rent control bill to be signed into law. Assembly bill 1482 would put a cap on rent for tenants in apartments and single-family homes. "My sense of security is pretty much gone," says Sara McTimmonds. "We don't know if we're going to be in or out." McTimmonds has been living at the Olive Wood Gardens Apartment complex for 12 years. It's a low-income housing complex for seniors and those who are disabled. McTimmonds says she's already had her rent increased twice. "In February, and then in July my rent was going to go up from 550 to 900."Renters are hoping for rent protection. Assembly Bill 1482 would do just that. The bill would make it illegal for property owners to raise rents more than 7 percent in one year. Not everyone is in favor of the bill. The California Apartment Association and the California Association of Realtors say they state underbuilt housing for so many years, and that's why rent is so high. "The five percent, plus the CPI may be enough if you don't have significant operational costs if you don't need a new roof, but that's not a certainty," says Molly Kirkland with the Southern California Rental Housing Association. The Senate Appropriations Committee will hear Assembly Bill 1482 Friday and decide whether or not to move it out of suspense file status for the rest of 2019.
