CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former Tijuana police officer was handed a two- year state prison sentence today for his role in a planned break-in of a Chula Vista residence, which he and others believed was a stash house containing around million in drug money.Marco Quijas-Castillo, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery for the attempted January break-in.A fellow Tijuana officer, Jesus Estrada Torres, 35, was also charged in the case and is awaiting trial on a conspiracy charge.According to preliminary hearing testimony, the two officers and four other men believed a shipment of money would be delivered to the three-bedroom residence, which was actually being rented by the FBI. The defendants were informed of the supposed shipment by an undercover FBI agent, according to testimony.According to the criminal complaint, Quijas-Castillo and Torres crossed into the United States from Mexico with Ignacio Martinez-Cruz, 34, and met up in Chula Vista with fellow defendants Nicholas Jeremiah Shaw, 25, Mario Eugene Hall, 35, and Tomas Emmanuel Ramirez, 30, who allegedly traveled to Chula Vista from San Bernardino County.Castillo and Torres ``provided counter-surveillance'' at a Kohl's store in Chula Vista, while the other four men met with the undercover agent, according to the complaint.Castillo and Torres also provided surveillance near the Chula Vista residence while Shaw walked up to the house, and ``entered a code into a lockbox containing a key to enter the house,'' the complaint alleges.According to testimony, the men planned to tie up two people believed to be inside the home, then take the money, but were arrested by law enforcement upon approaching the home. 1733

(KGTV) - A man suspected of making a threat against a Chula Vista Catholic church and school was arrested Wednesday, Chula Vista Police said.Thomas Escajeda, 61, called St. Rose of Lima church and school at 293 H St. Tuesday. He threatened to harm parishioners attending a mass for All Saints Day on Thursday at 8 a.m., police said.A church representative called police, who arrested Escajada Wednesday on suspicion of Felony Criminal Threats. He is currently being held on 0,000 bail.Escajeda has been a regular participant of the church for a year, police said. Investigators said they did not know the motive for the threat.The All Saints Day mass is part of a solemn holy day for Catholic worshippers, dedicated to honor of the saints of the Church, according to Catholic.org.The mass and Thursday classes were canceled despite the arrest, police said. (KGTV) It is no secret that restaurants throughout San Diego County have been struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic, but one restaurant in Otay Ranch was forced to close before it ever had its grand opening, just as the pandemic was starting. Hurricane Grill and Wings was supposed to open sometime between late January and early February, but when the pandemic started, it delayed everything. The owner Abu Syed is now getting ready to open the restaurant on Monday, September 28th.The restaurant will open at just 25% capacity indoors and patio seating outdoors. Like so many other restaurant owners, Syed says the landlord did give them a break on rent, but will owe it at the end of their lease. The restaurant is staffed with 32 employees, 16 of them are full-time.In August, the California Restaurant Association projected that close to 30% of restaurants in the state could close for good because of the pandemic. (KGTV) - Federal and local authorities, in addition to hazmat crews, were called out to the scene of a drug raid in Chula Vista after agents found fentanyl and THC extraction on the property. The raid happened at a home on 2nd Avenue Wednesday afternoon. DEA officials confirmed the search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation. DEA agents arrested one man during their search, and he is suspected of mixing fentanyl with other illegal drugs, according to a DEA spokesperson. Agents did not identify the man or disclose the amount of drugs found. The hazardous materials teams were summoned to the scene to investigate any possible contamination in the neighborhood and to process the drugs that were discovered. 747

(KGTV) - Chula Vista neighbors are dealing with the aftermath of a San Diego Gas and Electric equipment malfunction that triggered a power outage and caused their homes to smoke.Residents on Country Club Circle told 10News about the outage Saturday night. Electricity was restored and everything seemed fine, they said, but they woke up to sparked outlets, smoke and fire Sunday morning.“Every single room sounded like someone came in with gunshots,” said Mona Hernandez. “My girls got up screaming ‘fire’ in one of the rooms and I thought they were on fire. I feared they were actually on fire until I got to see them.”SDG&E said the equipment failure involved a transformer and affected more than 400 homes in the area.One woman said she was concerned about her air conditioning and heating working for her son.“He’s disabled. We need the heater to use. He's going to have open brain surgery next week. You people from SDG&E should have been out here.”She also said her smart television was destroyed by the outage and feels she deserves more than what SDG&E is offering to replace it.“ for a Toshiba smart TV is not very nice.”SDG&E said it has representatives assisting customers with claims.
