SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Nearly 200 realtors and elected officials in San Diego kicked off an innovative program aimed to reduce access to dangerous opioids. Volunteers went door-to-door, handing out information cards and special plastic bags for residents to properly dispose of their unneeded and expired prescription drugs.For the fourth year in a row, the number of San Diegans who died from unintentional drug-related deaths went up. To counter the increasing number of opioid deaths, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, Safe Homes Coalition and the San Diego Association of Realtors launched the “Keep Kids Safe” program.10News followed a group of volunteers who were assigned to walk around the Bay Ho area. “I’m not here to sell a home. I’m here to introduce an opportunity to save lives," real estate broker, Robert Weichelt said. In the last couple of years, he has sene a disturbing trend in his industry. “We had people coming to our open houses, going in to take medicine out of the medicine cabinet," Kevin Burke, CEO of the San Diego Association of Realtors said. Thieves would pose as prospective buyers, then steal prescriptions from the medicine cabinets when they tour the property. That is why more nearly 200 realtors volunteered their Saturday to spread the word about disposing of unneeded or expired prescription drugs. Flushing pills down the drain causes pollution. Instead, they are distributing 100,000 special prescription bags that could be taken to one of 20 disposal sites in San Diego County, so they do not land in the wrong hands. Sandy Nolan lost her son, Jerry, to a heroin overdose almost 11 years ago. His gateway drug was inside of their home. “It all started with prescription drugs," Nolan said. That is why she is so passionate about eliminating access to dangerous opioids. “When you’re done with that prescription, and you don’t need it anymore, get it in that bag, take it to the disposal spots, and get it out of your house, right away," Nolan said. SAN DIEO (KGTV) - Parole agents checked on child sex offenders Thursday night to ensure they were in compliance, as part of the 26th Annual Operation Boo.10News rode along with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Agents who went knocking on 7 doors Halloween night."The gates were closed, the lights were turned off, they kind of know what is expected of them," Parole Agent Matthew Holmes said.Some of the stops took us to National City, City Heights, even a marina where a house boat was docked."Most of the time they're compliant, occasionally somebody has to go back to jail, but we just try to hold them accountable for their conditions," Holmes said.That means no alcohol, drugs, weapons, or pornography.Thursday night everyone checked out.One parolee told 10News he's excited to take the next step after his release, "I feel fantastic, the program is great, State Parole is great. It's definitely worth it. I think all this tax payers expense, they're getting their money's worth, I'll tell you that."Operation Boo is just a small part of agents' role of checking in on parolees. San Diego State University's planned Mission Valley campus will generate more than 45,000 daily vehicle trips once its built out, according to a new draft environmental impact report.In November, San Diego voters approved a plan for SDSU to turn the SDCCU Stadium site into a Mission Valley campus. It will allow the university to grow from its current enrollment of 36,000 to more than 50,000. "It's great, it's allowing more students to come in and get their education started," said Tyler Ollison, who just transferred to SDSU. The university is planning more than just a campus in Mission Valley. It also is proposing a 35,000 seat stadium, 4,600 residential units, 400 hotel rooms, and 95,000 square-feet of retail, restaurants, and a grocery story. Plus, the university plans to build 1.4 million square feet of campus office and lab space, and 100 thousand square feet of medical office space.Its new draft environmental impact report says the project will ultimately generate 45,174 new daily trips to and from the campus, in already bustling Mission Valley. "Our project proposes a number of signal re-timings, and expansions of turn lanes, and a number of entrances and exits throughout the site," said Gina Jacobs, SDSU's vice president for the development. Jacobs added the project calls for a new road from Fenton Parkway into the campus. The draft EIR also studies alternate forms of transportation, including how the on-site trolley stop can figure in. The project completion is expected in 2037. Meanwhile, the new stadium is expected to open in 2022. SDSU is now taking feedback on its draft EIR, which can be viewed here. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Realtors say all the signs point to a busy spring and summer in San Diego."It's heating up a little bit," says Markus Feldmann, with the Pacific Real Estate Center. "We see a very active market again."Home prices have come down from their record peak in August of 2018. That month, CoreLogic reported that San Diego's median home price was 3,000. In December, it had dropped to 0,000 (see chart above). According to their numbers, homes in San Diego sold for ,000 more in that period than other times of the year. "Let it breathe like a good glass of wine.
