While we may enjoy the sparkle and booms, your pets may run for their lives.“You don’t want to have them outside where all those loud fireworks are going off,” said San Diego Humane Society spokeswoman Dariel Walker. The organization sees a sudden spike in stray animals around this time of year, she said.Just like on July 4th, many pets who are terrified of loud noises run off in a panic. Walker suggested that owners prevent that by creating a calming environment for animals. “You can even even play music or have the TV on or have some noise in the background to drown out that loud sound of the fireworks,” Walker said. Walker advised pet owners to be prepared with a microchip in case they do run away. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego City Council members approved Tuesday a new state of emergency resolution linked to sewage in the Tijuana River Valley. District Eight Councilmember Vivian Moreno, whose region includes the Tijuana River Valley, authored the resolution. Moreno cited significant amounts of plastic, tires and sediment flowing from Mexico into the United States. “This has been going on for far too long and South Bay is not a dumping ground,” Moreno said. “To solve this international crisis, we must stop pointing fingers. This is a regional issue that calls for a regional solution.” The crisis, which was first recognized with a resolution in 1993, has since worsened, council members agreed. The City of San Diego’s new resolution was designed to raise awareness about the public health impact. “District Eight residents frequently experience a foul smell, and people who have been exposed to the toxic waste have reported skin rashes, headaches and respiratory issues,” said Moreno. “The sewage, sediment and trash occurring in the Tijuana River Valley is an environmental crisis and we’re going to keep fighting until it’s fixed once and for all,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer. “We’ve seen some positive movement recently after decades of advocating as a region to our leaders in Washington and Mexico City. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that a record number of potholes have been filled in the city in 2019.An average year sees 32,000 potholes filled, but Wednesday crews filled pothole number 49,000. This year the city tripled the number of pothole repair teams and extended their hours to include nights and weekends. Matt Sinclaire lives on Georgia Street in University Heights, however, and showed 10News a doorknob flier that was left at homes on his block last week announcing that street would be repaved this week. Curiously, the no parking signs were pulled Friday, he says, and the job, he was told, was canceled. Wednesday, that announcement from the mayor was held, and two potholes were repaired directly in front of Sinclaire's home. "This whole thing pissed me off," says Sinclaire. "We waited this long and finally we were going to see our street paved... but we have a nice shiny little black square that's going to probably be good for the next year." Deputy City of San Diego Chief Operating Officer Johnnie Perkins told 10News the project was postponed, not canceled, due to the subcontractor's staffing issues.
