LA MESA, Calif. (CNS) - Authorities Monday reached out to the public for help in identifying a group of people suspected of breaking into and looting a La Mesa jewelry store following a protest against police brutality nearly four months ago.Surveillance cameras captured photos and video of at least six people suspected of breaking into Pierre's Jewelers, 8324 La Mesa Blvd., on the night of May 30, according to La Mesa police. Many of the individuals were wearing face coverings, but one woman had a tattoo on her left forearm and one man had tattoos on his right forearm, left forearm and right elbow.Anyone with information on the identity of the individuals in the photos is asked to call the La Mesa Police Department at 619-667-7532 or lamesatips@cityoflamesa.us.Tipsters can remain anonymous and may also contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Over 50 crimes, including arson, vandalism, burglary and theft, were committed in La Mesa on May 30 and May 31, LMPD Lt. Greg Runge said.On May 30, a crowd gathered in front of the La Mesa Police Department at 2:30 p.m. to protest the May 27 arrest of a man at the Grossmont Transit Center, as well as the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.A portion of the group then marched onto Interstate 8 at Baltimore Drive, blocking traffic in both directions for hours.Around 6 p.m., protesters remaining in front of the La Mesa Police Department threw rocks and water bottles at an armored police car nearby, and police deployed tear gas, pepper balls and bean bag rounds in an attempt to disperse the crowd.Later in the evening, the La Mesa Springs Vons market -- closed at 8 p.m. -- was looted. Nearby businesses were looted as well, including the Grossmont Center Target as well as several businesses in the La Mesa Springs Shopping Center. After 11 p.m., two banks -- a Chase branch and a Union Bank branch -- were engulfed in flames on Spring Street and both burned to the ground. As of Monday, 25 people have either been arrested or "had charges sought against them for various crimes," Runge said. Of those, four people were residents of La Mesa and the remaining 21 resided elsewhere in San Diego County. 2187

Listening to music, whether it's classical, hip hop or pop, is a hobby many of us take for granted. As one Ohio teenager realized, for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, enjoying music isn't that easy."My invention was taking music, create a music visualizer that could take a musical input and develop an intuitive visualization to convey all the emotions that music does convey, for the deaf and hearing-impaired to really connect with music," said Aaron Ziegler, an 11th grader who took home the Technology Award at the virtual Ohio Invention Convention for his invention this year.Ziegler got the idea for his music visualizer after working at a summer camp that helped children with special needs connect with their emotions through music. He realized he wanted to give those who are deaf or hearing impaired an emotional connection with music."The computer reads the entire song and figures out the attributes and what to take out. It then goes through behind the scenes and codes, which converts to the color display and then which outputs," said Ziegler. The hope is to convey the emotions of music with pictures and colors."Current music visualizers, at least the ones that are accessible today, are rather inadequate in terms of conveying the full emotions. A lot of them are really a rhythmic thing and not really inclusive to their emotions," said Ziegler.Ohio Invention League's representative, who goes by Professor Prototype, hopes Aaron Ziegler's invention inspires other young inventors."I think one of the things that young people see when they learn about Aaron’s project is the power that he had to solve a problem that was important to him,” she said. “That they all have the power to look around the world and say, ‘How can I make the world a better place? How can I help other people?’"The Invention Convention is free for any student or school to participate and kids can still tap into their creative ideas for inventions and participate virtually."While they can be the advanced technical solutions like Aaron's, which is a wonderful union of stem skills and problem-solving, there's also lots of different ways to solve a problem and sometimes that involves the stuff you have in your garage," said Professor Prototype.'It's really easy to do this stuff. All I had was a laptop and a WiFi connection,” said Ziegler. “I handled 90 percent of what I was doing, and you don't even need that. You can use cardboard and stuff, so I want to make sure people remember that really anything you think you can need, you can do it.”Ziegler's win earned him a college savings award. He'll go on to compete in the Invention Convention US Nationals next year. 2684

Larry King has gone public with a recent cancer diagnosis. In a statement to CNN on Thursday, King's rep said the legendary talk show host was "diagnosed with stage 1 Adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer, through a routine chest examination.""He immediately underwent a successful surgery to remove the upper lobe and lymph node," the rep added. "Larry returned to work two weeks later, having just celebrated his 60th year in broadcasting. He looks forward to working for another 60 years and thanks everyone for their well wishes!"King, 83, talked to "Extra" on Wednesday about discovering over the summer he had lung cancer."Part of the checkup is a chest X-ray and that is the protocol," King said. "I do it every year, it's always normal. Then the doctor says, 'I see a little spot here. Let's do a CAT scan.'"The CAT scan led to a PET scan, he said, and doctors found a spot they wanted to remove.King underwent surgery on July 17 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles."They took it out," he said. "It was malignant."The former CNN talk show host said he had no idea prior to his annual exam that there were any issues."If I had not had the chest X-ray, it would have progressed," he said.King has been open about his health issues in the past, including a 1987 heart attack and bypass surgery months later. He also has type 2 diabetes. In 1999, King was diagnosed with and successfully treated for prostate cancer.A former smoker who quit following his heart attack, King said he's sharing his lung cancer diagnosis to help others."Get a chest X-ray," King said. "It takes two seconds." 1627

LA MESA, CA (KGTV) — Parents of children in an East County school district were looking forward to their kids returning to campus at the end of this month, but that might not happen.Students in the La Mesa-Spring Valley District are scheduled to return Nov. 30, but if San Diego County's COVID-19 cases push the county back to the most restrictive purple tier, that will not happen.Meg Jacobsen is the executive director of the district's education services. Her seven-year-old daughter is also a student in the district."My daughter loves to go to virtual school, but being on a zoom all day can be hard for students, especially little ones," said Jacobsen.Under the state's health mandate, schools that are already open in some capacity would not be affected by moving back a tier, but schools that are closed would not be able to open."If schools have opened for in-person learning, then they can continue with what they are doing. At some schools, where they may have opened several grade levels, say they opened K-3, and they planned to continue adding grade levels, those schools would be able to continue doing that," said Bob Mueller, program specialist at the San Diego County Office of Education. The mandate applies to individual school sites."In other places, where you might have one school in a school district opened and other schools not, those schools would be frozen," said Mueller.Jacobsen is hoping the county's number of COVID-19 cases goes down."This has been a rocky road the past six months for us. Our teachers have been just absolutely amazing," said Jacobsen. The district initially planned to open in mid-October but pushed back the date partly because of the outbreak of cases at nearby San Diego State."Like so many things in 2020, we've had to, I think the word is, pivot, make plans A, B, C and then when we find something new, we are prepared, but we have to be prepared and adjust the way we go," said Jacobsen.San Diego Unified is still planning to bring more students back on campus in January. Oceanside's school district is bringing back elementary students on Nov. 9, middle, and high school students are scheduled to return in January.Schools impacted by the purple tier would not be able to open until mid-December."Schools that haven't reopened in any capacity would essentially be frozen there for a minimum of five weeks," said Mueller."It's a waiting game at this point," said Jacobsen. Elementary schools would be allowed to apply for a waiver from the county to try to reopen. 2530

LAKE PARK, Fla. -- The owners of a bait and tackle store in Florida have been accused of holding two people they suspected of shoplifting at gunpointDaniel Friedman, Eric Friedman and Daniel Friedman, the owners of Just Fishing Tackle and Consignment in Lake Park are charged with robbery with a firearm, false imprisonment, and tampering with evidence. On Aug.16, deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says it responded to the Just Fishing in reference to a shoplifting complaint. When deputies arrived, one person was laying on the ground surrendering to law enforcement, and one of the business owners was holding a shotgun over another person in the rear of the store.PBSO says the person being held at gunpoint had lacerations and swelling to his face and lacerations to his arms and back.During their investigation, deputies learned that the Friedmans knew the people they accused of shoplifting. The employees told the detective that on Aug. 8, the person being held at gunpoint along with an unidentified man came to Just Fishing and stole a fishing reel worth approximately 0. Upon entering the store, PBSO says Eric Friedman confronted the man about the theft. According to the detective, the man and Daniel Friedman began to fight and Daniel Friedman pulled out a shotgun.PBSO says the two men were held against their will at gunpoint. They later told the detective that they were beaten and forced at gunpoint to hand over their cell phones, ,180 in cash and their wallets.According to PBSO, after learning this information, Daniel Friedman and family then became confrontational with deputies regarding the alleged robbery of the men and the family then denied deputies access to the business.PBSO says the store's surveillance video system was disabled between 2:40 p.m. and 4:36 p.m.Deputies say they believe the DVR was unplugged during this time.According to PBSO, at 2:40 p.m. store employee Marc Kellener is observed walking towards the area where the DVR system is located and then the video ceases recording. The video resumes at 4:35 p.m. with one of the men seen lying on the ground with his hands out to his side in the surrender position and the other man seated in a chair in the rear office portion of the store.Eric Friedman is seen yelling at the seated man and Daniel Friedman is seen standing next to him holding a chrome-colored shotgun. Naomi Friedman is seen on video placing a large sum of cash into a white envelope, then place the envelope into a larger mailing envelope and places it into a desk drawer.PBSO says surveillance footage shows Daniel Friedman grabbing one man by the neck and pushing him back down into the chair. At 4:36 p.m., surveillance video shows Marc Kellener walk into the office and punch one of the men twice in the face.At 4:40 p.m., Daniel Friedman is seen on video striking one of the men in the head with the butt of the shotgun. Minutes later Eric Friedman is seen spitting in one man's face multiple times.Daniel Friedman is charged with two counts of robbery with a firearm, two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of kidnapping/false imprisonment.Naomi Friedman and Marc Kellener are both charged with two counts of robbery with a firearm, two counts of kidnapping/false imprisonment, and one count of destroying evidence.    3681
