SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting they be allowed to reopen the local economy.The board voted 4-1, with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher voting "no," to take further steps into reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic. The letter requests San Diego County be permitted to reopen gyms, hotels, nail salons, wineries and breweries, churches at full capacity, theme parks, youth sports, charter and fishing boats, community pools, and museums, Supervisor Jim Desmond tweeted.Following the vote, Desmond said in a statement that it will be up to Newsom, but that most of the board believes the county is ready.RELATED: Passive recreation activities now allowed at San Diego County beaches"Just now, the Board approved a plan telling the Governor we are ready to open for business. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students have been released from school following reports of shots fired in the area around Kearny Senior High School Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, officers were alerted to the reports around 2:20 p.m. So far, no one has been taken into custody and police are still searching for a scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The future of Horton Plaza was teased in a new set of renderings released by the firm that purchased the aging mall.Stockdale Capital Partners purchased Horton Plaza in June 2018 with the aim of revitalizing the center into a mixed-use high-tech office and retail space. Wednesday, the firm gave a glimpse at The Campus at Horton, showing a completely transformed Nordstrom building from a concrete facade into a glass-covered office space. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced new safety measures for its offices Thursday as the coronavirus pandemic continues across the state.Starting Thursday morning, every person who goes to a DMV location will get their temperature checked before they're allowed inside.Previously, only people getting in-car driving tests were subject to temperature checks.A DMV spokesperson told ABC 10News they'll follow CDC guidelines, only letting people inside if their temperature is below 100.4 degrees."We always follow the guidelines that are issued by the CDC," said DMV spokesperson Cynthia Moreno. "So, following their guidelines, we decided that it would be best to start taking the temperature of all of our customers and our employees to make sure that we follow the safety protocols."The temperature screening is in addition to safety measures already in place, which include mask requirements, social distancing, limited services available and hand-washing and sanitizing stations located throughout each field office.Because of all that, DMV officials say it's best to do as much as you can on the agency's website and avoid coming into the offices, if possible."We want to make sure the people who come to our offices feel safe," said Moreno. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds announced layoffs Thursday amid the coronavirus pandemic.According to the fairgrounds, staffing will be reduced by 58 percent due to a loss of revenue."Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent ban on mass gatherings, the 22nd District Agricultural Association|Del Mar Fairgrounds (22nd DAA) has suffered severe financial losses to its income streams."The fairgrounds says since March, revenues have fallen by 66 percent "Combined with the postponement of the San Diego County Fair and no patrons for this year’s summer horse racing meet, revenues are estimated to be down 92 percent by the end of the summer."The fairgrounds will give employees 120 days of continued employement with an official layoff date of October 15.“It is with a heavy heart that we must make the difficult decision to reduce staffing at this time,” said Tim Fennell, CEO and General Manager of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “Until it is safe to host events again, reducing our staffing levels is crucial to the survival of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We must preserve this community treasure in order to continue its legacy for future generations as an economic engine for the region and a beloved entertainment and education destination.
