FUZHOU, Nov. 11 (Xinhua)-- Alibaba.com Ltd., operator of China' s largest online-commerce site for businesses, said its paying members in the third quarter exceeded 1 million for the first time, as shown in its unaudited financial figures for the quarter, released on Thursday.Alibaba boasts 56.7 million registered users, 8.2 million storefronts and over 1 million paying members, up by 25 percent, 35 percent and 30 percent respectively, year on year, according to the report."We specifically stepped up our efforts in enforcing a trusted and safe environment in our marketplace by eliminating paying members who committed fraud, as well as those who have a high probability to commit fraud. In this quarter, we terminated about 1,200 Gold Supplier members," said David Wei, chief executive officer of Alibaba.com., as posted on its website.Further, Alibaba's third quarter profit rose by 55 percent to 366.1 million yuan (55.3 million U.S. dollars) from 236 million yuan one year earlier, Alibaba said."Despite the uncertainty and mixed signals in the global economic environment, we are gratified to see our financial growth remained strong during this quarter," said David Wei.
CHENGDU, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A spreading grassland fire in a mountainous Tibetan region in southwest China proved deadly when it trapped soldiers and local residents trying to put out the blaze. By Sunday night, at least 22 have been killed and three severely burned, local officials said.The wild fire was raging through a grassland atop a plateau some six kilometers from the county government seat in Daofu County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, Sichuan Province. About 500 mu (33.3 hectares) of the grassland has burned, while 200 mu (13 hectares) is still on fire, a source with local fire-fighters told Xinhua."The fire line stretches several kilometers long. As it darkens at night, most fire-fighters have retreated to the camps." Yang Hao, a senior local fire-fighting official told reporters. "However, we are still closely monitoring the situation."Prairie fire is seen in Daofu County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, Dec. 5, 2010. At least 22 people have been killed in the prairie fire.About 2,000 people have joined the fire-fighting efforts. Sichuan Governor Jiang Jufeng led a work-team to Daofu, some 580 kilometers from provincial capital Chengdu, late Sunday night. An emergency medical team is also the en route to Daofu from Chengdu.Local officials said the grassland fire broke out at noon on Sunday and was brought under control at about 3 p.m. However, gusting winds boosted the flames and trapped people fighting the fire.Of the 22 fatalities, 15 were soldiers, two were workers with the grassland administration while five others were local civilians, officials said. Three of the severely injured have been rushed to hospitals.Gusting winds ebbed anew late Sunday night, providing favorable conditions to put out the flames, fire-fighters said.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's rapid economic growth is good for the U.S. workers, and the U.S. government is committed to improving bilateral economic relations with China, said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday."China has lifted almost 200 million people out of poverty (in the past two decades). And in the years ahead, hundreds of millions more Chinese will ascend into the middle class," Locke said at a U.S.-China commercial relations forum, which was held in Washington ahead of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) session scheduled for Dec. 14-15."The United States welcomes this growth because this is good for the people of China ... it's good for the global economy, and good for U.S. business and ultimately, U.S. workers," said Locke.He noted that as recently as 40 years ago, the commercial relationship between the United States and China barely existed. But in the recent decades, "we have seen our countries grow progressively closer."In 2009, the bilateral trade volume reached some 365 billion dollars. China was the largest supplier of U.S. goods imports in 2009 and was the third-largest market for U.S. exports, only after Canada and Mexico.Locke mentioned that as U.S. Commerce Secretary, he has visited China for four times."Each time I visit China, I'm absolutely amazed by the transformation and the progress within China," he said.Locke noted that although there are disagreements between the two sides, there are more opportunities for cooperation."In many areas, especially in emerging industries, like clean energy and biotechnology, the interests of China and the United States are tied together. China is a global leader in manufacturing and the 'made in China' phrase is known around the world. Chinese manufacturing facilities provide jobs and spur growth not just in China, but around the world as more international companies explore doing business in China," Shapiro said during the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which was organized by CEA.The 2011 International CES kicked off here on Thursday with more than 2,700 exhibitors unveiling their latest technology innovations, up from the 2010 CES which featured 2,500 exhibitors. A total of 267 exhibitors from China, including major companies such as Haier and Hisense, will display their products at the show.According to CEA and market research company Gfk research, China is expected to contribute 13 percent of global CE retail revenue in 2010, up from 12 percent in 2009."The Chinese consumer technology market is also critical to the success of the International CES," Shapiro said. "China also ranked 3rd in terms of international attendance at the 2010 CES, with 1,105 Chinese industry professionals."However, while a leader in manufacturing, to become a true world leader China must produce innovative companies with brands that are recognized around the world, Shapiro cautioned."In fact, not one Chinese company is included on the Interbrand annual listing of the top 100 global brands.
