SHERMAN HEIGHTS, Calif. (KGTV) - A storage facility for homeless people to keep their belongings is at capacity, leading some people to call for expansion.The facility is in Sherman Heights, near 20th Street and Commercial. It opened in June of 2018 with room for 500 bins.It was full by Halloween.Now there is a 200 person waiting list. The city initially wanted to put 1000 storage bins in the warehouse, but pushback from neighbors led to a compromise of just 500.Neighbors worried that the facility would be a magnet for homeless people, drawing them to the area.Six months later, people who spoke to 10News say the opposite has happened. They still see homeless people in the area, but not any more than before the facility opened.They also say the amount of clutter on the streets and sidewalks has decreased dramatically.Crime has also gone down in the area. According to the crimemapping.com website, there were 188 crimes reported within 1500 feet of the facility in August of 2018. In December, that number had dropped to 73 (see chart above).Part of that is from extra police patrol. A recent police department report says that SDPD is spending nearly million on overtime to add patrols in the neighborhood of the facility.City officials told the San Diego Union Tribune they have no plans to expand the facility. But at a meeting last month at the University of San Diego, several homeless advocated said it's an idea worth looking into. 1460

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A concert at the Belly Up Tavern this Saturday will raise money for a program dedicated to kids with special needs.Banding Together will hold their 7th annual fundraiser from 12-4 pm on February 24th. The concert features three local bands, and one special, surprise guest artist.The bands are Dr. Seahorse, the Grinnell Trio and Jungle Poppins.But the real stars will be the kids and young adults from the program, some of whom will perform with the bands on stage."It's thrilling for them," says Banding Together Co-Founder and Director Angela Meier. "They hear that people like the Rolling Stones have performed a show there and now they get to as well!"The program uses music therapy to help people with special needs come out of their shell. Meier says it's inspiring and amazing to see how they progress."I've had students who have difficulty putting sentences together," says Meier. "And using rhythm and music, all of the sudden they're able to sing whole sentences."In addition to individual and small group classes, Banding Together runs 42 "Jam Sessions" throughout the year, where the students and musicians join together to make music."It's not just that it's making them feel good, but it's giving them self-esteem," says Meier. "It gives them social skills and prepares them to go out into the community and give back."The concert is open to the public and will also feature live auctions, silent auctions and other fundraisers. All the money goes to fund scholarships and to pay for the jam sessions. Starbucks announced Friday that it would be providing its baristas with Black Lives Matter T-shirts."Black Lives Matter. We continue to listen to our partners and communities and their desire to stand for justice together," the coffee chain tweeted Friday. "The Starbucks Black Partner Network co-designed t-shirts with this graphic that will soon be sent to 250,000+ store partners."Starbucks' decision to provide employees with Black Lives Matter shirts comes days after BuzzFeed reported that employees were told they were prohibited from wearing apparel with the slogan at work.According to BuzzFeed, a corporate memo was sent out in response to some managers' inquiries about allowing employees to wear BLM apparel that stated that the movement "could be misunderstood and potentially incite violence."Starbucks reportedly classified Black Lives Matter apparel in the same category as "religious or political personal accessories." However, Starbucks has provided employees with branded LGBTQ-themed shirts for Pride month in the past and encouraged employees to wear them at work.The ban on Black Lives Matter apparel came as Starbucks pushed messages supportive of the movement on social media. 1209

Sgt. Ron Helus had been set to retire in the next year from the Ventura County, California Sheriff's Office when, responding late Wednesday to a call of a shooting, he entered the Borderline Bar & Grill.It would be the last act of a 29-year law enforcement veteran described as hardworking and dedicated and, now, as a hero.Helus was among the first officers through the door at the Borderline. He died trying to stop the rampaging gunman, who killed 11 others in the attack in Thousand Oaks, California."He went into save lives, to save other people." Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said of Helus, his voice breaking."He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero," he said.Helus succumbed to his wounds at a hospital, police said.
