NORTH PARK, Calif. (KGTV) - Peking Restaurant, a staple of the North Park food scene for 88 years, will close in March of 2019.The owners made the announcement on their Facebook page earlier this month, saying it was time to retire."I'm going on 75 years old," co-owner Ken Fong told 10News. "It's time to enjoy my last few years."The Facebook post says "This decision did not come lightly to us as Pekin is such a special place in our hearts and we love what we do and all of you. A majority of our incredible staff here have been with us 25-40 years... and are ready for the next chapter of retirement and new endeavors."Fong says it's not just the owners who want to retire, but cooks and servers as well.Since word got out about the closure, the restaurant has been flooded with people who want one more meal at a place that became the go-to spot for Chinese food in the area."It's overwhelming," says Fong. "It's driving us nuts. Everyone is overworked."Fond adds that he doesn't mind the extra work, but he didn't expect this kind of reaction.In the wake of the extra crowds, the restaurant put up a sign warning customers that wait times may take longer than usual. They say they don't want to add capacity, so they can give customers the same level of service they've always had.People in the area say it's sad to see such a great place go away."This is something I've known my whole life. I'm going to miss it," says Barbara Sims. She used to come with her parents as a child. Now she brings her grandkids to the restaurant when they visit.Fong says he appreciates all the well wishes he's received in the past few weeks."They all want to come back and have one last memory," he says. "So, thank you."The restaurant will stay open through the Chinese New Year in February and then close in March.Fong says several people and real estate groups have looked into buying it, but he doesn't know if the new owners will keep the location as a Chinese food restaurant or open something new. 2001

NEW YORK, N.Y. – It’s been nearly a year since the death of Elijah McClain in Colorado, but as people across the U.S. learn of his case, more are calling for justice.In New York City, a beautiful vigil was held on Monday to honor the life of the 23-year-old man, who played violin.A crowd of musicians with string instruments gathered in Washington Square Park to play a variety of songs, like “Amazing Grace” and “We Shall Overcome.”In videos shot by Yuxi Liu, spectators with candles can be seen crowding the Washington Square Arch, where the musicians were playing.Liu says the vigil wasn’t organized like a formal event, but that’s part of what made it so special. He says there was no rehearsal and you can even see people running up late in his video.“However, that’s exact the reason why it’s beautiful,” said Liu. “People showed up only because people care. Me and bunch of other photographers showed up because we want to help document the moment.”Elijah McClain caseThere’s been renewed interest in the Elijah McClain case after nationwide protests put a spotlight on past instances of police use of force across the country.McClain died on Aug. 24, 2019, shortly after being arrested by officers with the Aurora Police Department.KMGH reports that McClain was walking home after purchasing iced tea at a convenience store when a bystander called 911 to report “a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms.” Family says McClain wore the mask because he was anemic and got cold easily.When officers tracked McClain down, police say he began “resisting.” Body camera footage shows officers grab McClain almost immediately after attempting to stop him.As police struggled to detain McClain, an officer placed him in a "carotid hold" — a maneuver designed to limit blood flow to the brain. When McClain became unresponsive, paramedics administered a shot of ketamine "due to the level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state."Police insist that paramedics were the ones who chose to administer ketamine. NEW YORK — Free parking, free gym memberships, even free rent for three months — Manhattan rents have hit their lowest levels in nearly a decade.Nicole Beauchamp, a real estate agent with Engel & Volkers, said the current housing market in New York City is unprecedented."I have never seen this amount of landlord concessions, and they have actually increased from the summer," she said. "There is a great amount of opportunity right now to snag a good deal on an apartment in Manhattan."The latest report from realtor Douglass Elliman found that the median price of a Manhattan apartment last month was ,100, down from ,500 last October.The savings are even steeper for smaller apartments."We've seen a 19% decrease in the prices of studios," Beauchamp said.Landlords are hoping to lure renters back to Manhattan after thousands moved out during the peak of the pandemic."The vacancy rate, last month I think was just under 6% and this month, we're over 6%," Beauchamp said.That adds up to 16,000 empty apartments in Manhattan, and the greatest share of those vacant apartments are downtown."I saw some incredible deals down in Tribeca over the summer that are still persisting right now," Beauchamp said.More than 5,000 new leases were signed in Manhattan last month, up 12% after a September slump.Many renters are finding more room across the East River."I think there is stronger demand in Brooklyn than the rest of the city," real estate agent Akil Rossi said.The Elliman report found Brooklyn leases surged in October to the second-highest October total in 12 years.
