The stomach-churning market scare continues. The Dow tumbled 546 points, or 2.1%, on Thursday following another rollercoaster session. The index briefly turned positive during morning trading before succumbing to heavy selling pressure. At one point the Dow was down 699 points. The Dow has shed 1,378 points over the past two days. The mood on Wall Street was only slightly calmer than Wednesday's 832-point nosedive. The S&P 500 closed down 2.1%, notching its sixth-straight losing session. It's the longest slump for the broad index since just prior to President Donald Trump's election more than two years ago.The Nasdaq briefly tumbled into a correction, signaling a 10% decline from previous highs. But the index climbed out of correction territory and closed down 1.3%.All three major indexes have lost more than 5% this week. That hasn't happened since March."This kind of washout doesn't get accomplished in a day. Even though yesterday felt traumatic, it tends to be a three-day process," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley FBR.The VIX volatility index touched its highest level since February. One positive is that unlike on Wednesday, the market did not close on the lows of the day. The rebound was helped by fresh?reports that President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have agreed to meet next month at the G-20 summit. Such a meeting could ease fears that the US-China trade war will hurt corporate profits and slow the US economy.Tech stocks have come under fire because they are some of the riskiest and most expensive parts of the market. Investors fear how these momentum names will hold up in a downturn, particularly as interest rates spike. A proxy for the tech sector had its sharpest plunge in seven years on Wednesday."Halloween started early this month for investors," Ed Yardeni, president of investment advisory firm Yardeni Research, wrote to clients. The afternoon sell-off comes even though a new report showed that consumer prices rose less than expected in September.Stocks have turned sharply south in large part because investors are concerned about rising interest rates. As the Federal Reserve raises rates to prevent runaway inflation, investors have been getting out of bonds, driving down their price and driving up their yields. Suddenly, the return on bonds has become competitive with some stocks — particularly risky tech stocks.Rising interest rates also increase borrowing costs for households and businesses, eating into corporate profits. 2551

The White House physician assigned to Vice President Mike Pence, Jennifer Pena, has resigned, his office told CNN in a statement Friday. Pena worked in the White House medical unit."The vice president's office was informed today by the White House Medical Unit of the resignation. Physicians assigned to the vice president report to the White House Medical Unit and thus any resignation would go entirely through the Medical Unit, not the vice president's office," Alyssa Farah, Pence's press secretary, said in a statement to CNN.This comes after CNN reported Tuesday that a Pence doctor privately raised alarms within the White House last fall that President Donald Trump's doctor Ronny Jackson may have violated federal privacy protections for a key patient -- Pence's wife, Karen -- and intimidated the vice president's doctor during angry confrontations over the episode.  890

The ratings for Anderson Cooper's exclusive interview with Stormy Daniels won't be available until Monday afternoon. But the outpouring of reactions suggest that her account of an alleged affair with Donald Trump in 2006 captivated viewers across the country.Several hours after the interview was broadcast, Daniels' name was still the No. 1 trending topic in the U.S. on Twitter. The adult film star was also a trending topic on Facebook. The sexual encounter allegedly happened a decade before Trump was elected president. But the apparent cover-up is much more recent."For us, it wasn't so much 'there was an affair.' That's not as much the headline. For us, it's everything that has happened since and how we've gotten to this point," Cooper said in an interview for CBSNews.com about his sit-down with Daniels."I think there's more to come on this story. I'm not saying necessarily on Stormy Daniels' aspect of the story, but on the methods that were used to keep her silent," Cooper told CBSNews.com. "If Stormy Daniels' story is true that a thug came up to her in a parking lot in Las Vegas in 2011 -- this is long before Donald Trump was a presidential candidate -- I mean, if somebody is using intimidation tactics, physical intimidation tactics, it's probably not the first time they've done it. So that's a potential story I would imagine people would look at: Has this kind of thing happened before? And I don't know the answer to that."The porn star's media-savvy attorney, Michael Avenatti, bluntly told Cooper, "This is about the cover-up."Sunday's "60 Minutes" broadcast marked the first time that Daniels described an alleged threat made in 2011, a few weeks after she agreed to tell a tabloid magazine about the alleged affair. (The magazine story wound up being nixed.)On the East Coast, the "60 Minutes" broadcast was delayed by an NCAA basketball game. But once the broadcast began, there was a mixture of shock, revulsion, and snark on social media -- as well as sex jokes. Some critics reacted by saying "there was no news" in the interview. But the interview itself was news -- representing Daniels' first time speaking on camera about the alleged affair, the hush money, and more. And there were new details about the alleged threat, plus her motivations for breaking her silence.Avenatti tweeted afterward: "Any claim that 'There was nothing new other than the details of the threat' is not only false but is also similar to asking 'Other than the short interruption Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think of the play?'"Daniels told Cooper that Avenatti advised her not to share any texts, photos, or other evidence of the affair for now.It "would be foolish" to share the evidence now, Avenatti tweeted. He added: "Tonight is not the end -- it's the beginning."The two-part "60 Minutes" story focused on the alleged cover-up and the possible campaign finance law violations."The Stormy Daniels story is certainly about sex but it's also -- and more importantly -- about financial and emotional intimidation," Margaret Sullivan wrote in a column for Monday's Washington Post."The ultimate verdict" on Cooper's interview "will be whether viewers accept his claim that this is serious news," Politico's Michael Calderone wrote. On cable news and on Twitter, there was lots of chatter about whether Trump would join the conversation by tweeting or saying something about the scandal.CNN's Kaitlan Collins reported on Sunday that Trump is irked by what he sees as wall-to-wall coverage of Daniels' claims.New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman, who doubles as a CNN analyst, commented on Twitter that a standout part of the interview was Daniels' assertion that she was not attracted to Trump. Daniels referred to the relationship as a "business deal."Haberman said Trump "was incredibly proud of the 'Best Sex I Ever Had' NY Post front page" from decades ago. So Daniels' dismissive attitude "won't sit well."  3942

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a challenge to a controversial Arkansas abortion law blocking medication-induced abortions. The law, passed in 2015, says that any physician who "gives, sells, dispenses, administers, or otherwise provides or proscribes the abortion-inducing drug" shall have to have a contract with a physician who has admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The order, issued without comment, clears the way for the law to go into effect in mid-July if no other legal action is taken. Planned Parenthood is expected to make another challenge to the law in US district court."The Arkansas restriction, which was enacted supposedly to protect women's health, is medically unnecessary," lawyers for Planned Parenthood argued in court papers. They say it is unconstitutional because it places an undue burden on a patient's right to choose abortion.Medication abortion — available only early in a pregnancy — involves the combination of two pills called mifepristone and misoprostol.Lawyers for Arkansas say the law is a "commonsense requirement" that "merely requires medication abortion providers to have a contractual relationship (to ensure follow-up treatment if needed) with a physician that has admitting privileges.The-CNN-Wire 1263

The Wisconsin Supreme Court said Thursday it will not hear President Donald Trump's lawsuit, which had been requested to overturn election results in two Wisconsin counties. The lawsuit sought to overturn 200,000 ballots in Wisconsin. The decision from the Supreme Court comes just days after the Wisconsin Election Commission officially declared Joe Biden as the winner of Wisconsin."What we had is an abuse of the absentee process, dramatically in Dane and Milwaukee County,” said Jim Troupis, attorney for the Trump campaign. The lawsuit specifically focused on absentee ballots that were cast both through the mail and in person. The suit aimed to dismiss absentee ballots where the clerks' offices "inserted missing information,” people cast ballots "claiming Indefinite Confinement status" even if they "no longer qualified,” and absentee ballots "improperly cast or received at ‘Democracy in the Park’ events,” which were held in Madison.Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Election Commission have said the Trump Administration is required to file the lawsuit in circuit court, not the state Supreme Court. This story was originally published by Julia Marshall at WTMJ. 1183
