In a little more than a decade, more than 40 million diabetics worldwide could be left without insulin, the drug that is needed to help control the disease. It's a dire prediction from a study published in the journal Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology that could have life-altering consequences. Health expert Dr. Dahlia Wachs likened insulin to being the key to a door. In most people, it's a naturally occurring hormone the pancreas secretes when we eat sugar so that it can go from the bloodstream and into our cells.But it's a different matter for the millions of people whose bodies either don't make insulin or who have insulin resistance."Type 1 diabetics — they are very dependent on insulin," Wachs said. "They don't make insulin. They get very skinny and we have to give them insulin. There really isn't a lot of other treatments for these Type 1 diabetics.”A shortage of insulin in drug form poses major challenges. "So those with Type 2 diabetes, many of them can take pills, but if they are in poor control we have to give them insulin," Wachs said.Wachs said insulin is expensive to make. She says only three major pharmaceutical companies make it. And the demand isn't the highest here in the United States but other parts of the world, including Africa and Asia. Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulf Shores, Alabama, Wednesday morning, bringing with it Category 2-strength winds and life-threatening storm surge.The National Hurricane Center reports that the slow-moving storm made landfall at 5:45 a.m. ET with maximum sustained wind speeds of 105 mph.In an update published less than an hour before landfall, the NHC warned that "significant flash and urban flooding" was likely into inland Alabama and central Georgia.The storm is currently projected to slowly move eastward, carving through Alabama and central Georgia before reaching South Carolina by Friday afternoon. 622

If California electric utility PG&E is responsible for California's wildfires, it may not be able to afford the payouts it would owe.PG&E disclosed in a regulatory filing Tuesday that it "experienced an outage" on a transmission line in Butte County at 6:15 a.m. on November 8 -- just 15 minutes before the Camp Fire that has so far claimed 48 lives broke out.PG&E said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. But if its equipment is found to be responsible for it, PG&E "could be subject to significant liability in excess of insurance coverage" and that this could have "a material impact" on its financial results.The utility renewed its liability insurance coverage for wildfire events for an amount of approximately .4 billion that covers the period from August 1, 2018 through July 31, 2019, the company said in the SEC filing.But the fire is far from being under control, which means more damage is likely.
