San Diego (KGTV) –  Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer Friday announced the expansion of his successful “Play All Day” initiative, a pledge to break ground on or upgrade 50 parks in five years, by adding an additional 15 parks to neighborhoods across the city.   The program was initially proposed during Mayor Kevin Faulconer's 2016 State of the City address and the initiative is a partnership between the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District, designed to maximize public resources and increase the amount of city park space, especially in urban communities. The parks are used by the school system during the day and remain open to the community after school hours.  720

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Current COVID-19 restrictions in San Diego County are crushing the coin-operated game industry.From manufacturers to those who place games in restaurants, business is almost non-existent. The industry is calling on the county and state to step in before the local businesses are no more.Doug Hutton says his passion for coin-operated games started at a young age before blooming into a successful business 31 years later."Instead of putting all our money into the games, we should buy a game and I said that's the stupidest idea and suddenly here I am," Hutton said. "Three or four games in a restaurant and we share that revenue with the restaurant."Then the moment that all but ended the game. California ordered restaurants to close indoor operations due to the spread of the coronavirus."The governor mandated all restaurants needed to be closed for dine ins so, of course, that means we're out of business too," Hutton said.No quarters meant no money. No money meant no jobs for his five employees."It's been really hard. I mean first I had to lay them all off and they knew, I mean we had a meeting and I don't have a choice, there's no revenue," Hutton said.Five months later, Hutton's business is in the same predicament.For a moment, he thought he'd gotten a new life. Positive cases of COVID-19 were dropping and businesses reopened in San Diego and Southern California. Hutton said he had a safety plan ready."Maybe I don't want to wear a glove but I still want to sanitize, I mean that's not hard these are easy to come by. Our industry is selling them," says Hutton.Then a resurgence of cases and indoor operations once again came to a stop. Hutton's world got put on tilt. With no signs of things letting up he worries the stay at home orders are driving the arcade game industry out business."I've got to feed my family. I've got to pay rent here," Hutton says. “There are thousands and thousands of people and it’s crushing the whole industry."Hutton believes the only way to survive is by getting the government to allow businesses to get in the game before time runs out."The only way I won't come back is if I can't wait it out long enough," said Hutton.In a statement to ABC 10News, San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar said, in part, "Much like the clock winding down on a popular arcade game, the family entertainment industry is in a race against time to stay solvent. This unprecedented shutdown has dealt family entertainment centers a heavy blow with no relief in sight. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A father whose infant daughter was found dead outside a Los Angeles-area mortuary surrendered Monday at the U.S.-Mexico border. Alexander Echevarria, 22, of Sacramento, turned himself in to authorities at the San Ysidro Port of Entry with his attorney by his side. Echevarria was considered a person of interest in the death of 8-month-old Alexia Rose. The baby’s body was found near a trash container outside a funeral home in Bellflower last week. The infant was partially covered by a blanket and left in a car seat. Police believe the girl died in Sacramento. Her death was not due to natural causes, the Sacramento County Sheriff said Monday. Family members had reported Echeverria missing on Memorial Day. They said he suffers from depression and had made suicidal statements. Echevarria, who also had an arrest warrant on domestic violence-related charges, is being held in San Diego pending transfer to Sacramento.Associated Press contributed to this report. 993

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A gaping hole in an Allied Gardens hillside has many residents worried of a potential catastrophe.Outside of John and Sandy Knox’s bedroom window is a massive sinkhole that has already swallowed up their tree. The couple fears their home could be next.A broken-down drain pipe that is 50 feet deep and 60 feet wide is believed to be the cause of the hole.On Tuesday, ABC 10News spotted City of San Diego crews taking measurements and assessing the sinkhole.John Knox said he owns his mobile home, but a property management company owns the land it sits on and might be on the hook for fixing it.According to Knox, the management company has ignored his calls regarding the hole.ABC 10News learned the city is now investigating. 755

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two additional suspects were arrested today in connection with a shooting that left a 20-year old man mortally wounded in a Bay Terraces-area neighborhood 16 months ago.Ethan Leland Apan, 28, and Kevin Herrera, 26, were jailed this afternoon on suspicion of taking part in the slaying of Joaquin Ruiz of San Diego, according to police.Another suspect, 26-year-old John Orozco, was taken into custody last Wednesday on suspicion of murder in the case, Lt. Andra Brown said Shortly after midnight on July 13, 2019, patrol officers responding to a report of a possible traffic accident found Ruiz unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body in a vehicle alongside the roadway in the 7000 block of Paradise Valley Road.Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not disclosed what led investigators to identify Apan, Herrera and Orozco as suspects in the case and have revealed no suspected motive for the slaying.``The District Attorney's Office is currently reviewing this case, which is still an ongoing investigation,'' Brown said. ``We will not be making any further comments or providing additional information at this time.'' 1216
