BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, refuted on Monday recent reports online saying China is mulling adjustments of electricity prices, claiming such reports "untrue" .The NDRC said in a statement on its website that recently there were reports online saying the NDRC was studying plans to adjust electricity prices, citing Li Jing, deputy head of the Department of Resource Conservation and Environmental Protection at NDRC. Reports said she has not given the timetable for the plan.The statement further said she never made such remarks to media and the reports were groundless.The NDRC began a rise in the price of electricity for non-residential use by 2.8 fen (0.4 cents) per kwh on average nationwide on November 20 last year, with residential electricity prices unchanged.

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 135 people had been confirmed dead and 41 are missing, as some of the worst flooding in years continues in south China.By 4 p.m. Thursday, close to 35.5 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods since July 1, the Civil Affairs Ministry said in a notice on its website.About 113,000 homes were destroyed and more than 1.2 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at about 26 billion yuan (3.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from Wednesday's 22.2 billion yuan.In Jiangxi Province alone, at least eight people have died since July 8, and direct economic losses have amounted to more than 2.9 billion yuan.The ministry had dispatched work groups to Jiangxi to direct relief work.The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters announced earlier Thursday that floods had killed 594 people in 26 provinces since the beginning of the year. BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature Monday opened its bimonthly session with a series of draft laws and amendments, including the amendment to the Criminal Law and a draft law on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) protection.The session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) continued to deliberate draft amendments to the Law on Officers in Reserve Forces, the draft People's Mediation Law, as well as the draft Law on the Application of Laws to Civil Relationships Involving Foreign Interests.Lawmakers also deliberated for the first time draft amendments to the the Law on Deputies to the People's Congress, draft amendments to the Criminal Law, the draft Law on the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the draft revision of the Water and Soil Conservation Law.The amendment to Criminal Law proposes reducing the number of crimes subject to death penalty from 68 to 55. It also gives a definition of "organization in the nature of a criminal syndicate" and lists tougher punishments for crimes by such organizations.Drink driving, intentionally defaulting on payment to employees and illegal human organ trade are to be listed as crimes in the Criminal Law, according to the amendment.The draft law on ICH protection includes a definition of ICH, mechanisms for ICH surveys, regulation of the inheritance of ICH, and penalties for its destruction.Lawmakers on Monday also heard a report on the NPC Standing Committee's research results on issues for the formulation of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015). JINAN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- China concludes a five-day air defense exercise on Saturday with a live-fire drill and precision attacks on air targets by ground-to-air missiles.The live-fire drill, in Shandong Province, was part of the exercise code-named "Vanguard-2010," which began Tuesday in seven cities across Henan and Shandong provinces, involving more than 12,000 personnel.Seven types of ground-to-air weaponry, including a new type of ground-to-air missile and another state-of-the-art anti-aircraft gun, were used in intercepting and concentrating fire on air targets.Nearly 200 military aircraft, including drones, reconnaissance aircraft, fighter jets and helicopters, were involved in the five-day military drill, said Feng Zhaoju, deputy commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Command.The annual drill, consisting of two phases, focused on an emergency evacuation, strategy, reconnaissance, early warning, ground-to-air attacks and evacuation of command posts during the first phase which ended Thursday.Its second phase included testing of air defense abilities in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."A "Vanguard-2009A" exercise last year involved 5,000 troops from the army and air force."Vanguard-2008" included a 2,200-strong armored brigade from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Area Command.

BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of criminal explosion cases as well as gun crimes in China dropped by 13.4 and 33.1 percent year on year, respectively, in the first five months of 2010, Ministry of Public Security said in a statement Monday.The statement, however, did not provide exact numbers.Police nationwide seized over 351 tonnes of explosives, 1.7 million detonators, 15,000 guns, 1.84 million bullets, 300,000 imitation guns and 170,000 illegal knives since the launching of a national crackdown on illegal explosive and guns, the statement said.The widespread publicity about the police crackdown apparently paid off with 3,099 tips received from the public which led to the solving of 1,538 cases and the arrest of 2,065 suspects, said the statement.Those who provided information to police were rewarded with 960,000 yuan (about 141,000 U.S. dollars) in total, it said.
