SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- Scattered showers sprinkled all across San Diego County Saturday, bringing with it up to a quarter inch of rain. While rain totals were not significant, it was the reason for hundreds of car accidents.At 11:40 AM, 10News found a passenger van flipped onto its side. The driver said he was turning onto the Home on-ramp on WB 94 when he hydroplaned and flipped over. With some help from good Samaritans, he was able to climb up out of the passenger side door. He was not hurt. There were no passengers. One of many solo spin-outs happened on the 163 S to the 8 E on-ramp. The driver said at around 12:30 PM, he lost control of his truck at the top of the loop, then smashed into the concrete barrier. He said he felt lucky he did not roll down into a 50-foot embankment like another car did just a few hours prior in the same spot.RELATED: Check today's San Diego forecast10News crews also saw countless fender benders and flatbed tow trucks roaming the highways. Mother nature also wreaked havoc onto herself. At around 2:30 PM, a tree toppled onto Northbound 805 near Plaza South.Branches partially blocked the slow lane until clean up crews arrived.By afternoon, the rain clouds started to concentrate over North County. A three-car crash happened along Westbound 78 near the Nordahl Rd on-ramp in San Marcos. The small red vehicle ended up mangled, and the Prius somehow climbed up an embankment. Firefighters said all airbags on the Prius were deployed, and thankfully no-one was injured. 1526

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- One lucky couple will spend the rest of their lives together after crossing the finish line at America's Finest City half marathon together. The couple got engaged at the finish line in Balboa Park.The half marathon kicked off at the Cabrillo National Monument. Participants ran through Point Loma, past the San Diego Bay, the Embarcadero and ended in Balboa Park.The half-marathon is part of a series of racing called the Triple Crown, which means if runners participated in the La Jolla and Carlsbad marathons, they received a special medal today. Proceeds from the race go to several local charities.  660

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Two Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School alumni were in San Diego for a book tour Sunday evening. Sofie Whitney and Brendan Duff shared details of the most horrific moments of their lives — the 2018 Parkland School Shooting. They were two of several authors who wrote the New York Times Best Seller, "Glimmer of Hope."The event was part of a special talk series called "Community Divided: Humanity United," hosted by the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. "We may have different faiths or cultures. We may have different political perspectives. At the heart of it all of it we are human," CEO of the Lauren Family Jewish Community Center, Betzy Lynch said. "Valuing that human life and value in that, and other human beings is more important than any difference amongst any of us."Valentines Day 2018 was supposed to be a celebration of love. But for Sofie Whitney, it was anything but love."Awful. Like it was my worst nightmare... it was everyone's worst nightmare," Whitney said. At the time, Whitney was a senior at Stonemason Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. She was in drama class when a gunman committed the worst school shooting in the history of the country. Seventeen students and staff lost their lives. "It was unfair that so many people had experienced such a loss, and so many people experienced such trauma, and that it wasn't abnormal," Whitney said. It was not abnormal then. And not abnormal now. Mass shootings, unfortunately, are still a part of the American story. "We just need to collectively remind ourselves that this is a uniquely American problem, so we need to address this as Americans. Not as one side of the political spectrum or the other," Brendan Duff said. Duff had graduated from Stonemason Douglas High School the year prior. He heard about the tragedy from his younger brother, who survived the shooting. The Communication student at Elon University immediately flew home, and became the spokesperson for what later became the "March for Our Lives.""It's our crazy, messed up minds somehow led to this incredible movement forming from just a bunch of kids," Whitney said. Months following the tragedy, survivors did countless interviews. They started the "March for Our Lives" -- the campaign to fight against gun violence. They spoke to every publication, every station, and anyone who would listen. They did not stop until the media attention suddenly faded. The next stage was their book, "Glimmer of Hope.""With the book, we had a lot more time to streamline our process, and figure out what we wanted to include and how we wanted to tell our story," Duff said. He and Whitney collaborated on the chapter titled "Becoming a Team." In it, they wrote stories about survivors and victims. Duff wore several bracelets on his arms, each of them honoring the fallen. ?"We take little parts of these people with us," Duff said. "It doesn't just stop when the tragedy is over. It doesn't just stop when the trigger is pulled. This is something that we take with us, and so we take them with us physically too."Audience members were moved by the young adults' presentations. 72-year-old Lynne Jett from Vista went home with a signed copy of the New York Times Best Seller. "We can't let this happen anymore. We can't let our children sacrifice. That's why I am here," Jett said in tears. "If they are willing to stand, I am certainly willing to listen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) In light of the death of George Floyd in Minnesota, the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego is calling for a ban on all neck restraints used by law enforcement officers."They are inhumane, they are improper," said Yusef Miller with the coalition.Miller has called on San Diegans to write to local leaders demanding a ban on any neck restraints still used by officers.It's called the I can't breathe campaign."Whether kneeling on a neck, which is unconscionable or putting them in a carotid restraint, we're saying to ban all those restraints," he explained.Under the San Diego Police Department's use of force policy, carotid restraints are approved.Officers are not allowed to use their knees.A chokehold cuts off a person's air supply and can be deadly, which is banned by SDPD.The carotid restraint instead cuts off the blood supply, which can knock a person unconscious but is considered less dangerous overall."The carotid restraint becomes the chokehold in the field, and people are killed in this manner," said Miller. "We want all neck restraints banned, not only in San Diego, not only statewide, but throughout the nation."The renewed call to action comes after a video posted to social media showed an officer in Minnesota kneeling on George's Floyd's neck, an unarmed black man."He never even flinched, he never stopped for a second, he didn't take any pressure off for even one second," said Walter Cameron with the group Showing Up for Racial Justice. "It enrages me."California Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, representing the 79th District, including portions of San Diego, authored AB 392.The bill was signed into law by California Gov. Gavin Newsom last year and stated that deadly force by officers should only be used "when necessary in defense of human life.""I believe the use of restraints falls under the category of lethal force," Weber told 10News.
