SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man charged with the murder of a University of Pennsylvania student carried out the killing because the victim was gay, prosecutors said Thursday.A hate crime sentencing enhancement was being added to a murder charge against 21-year-old Samuel Woodward for the death of 19-year-old sophomore Blaze Bernstein, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said.Since Bernstein's body was found in January at a park near his parents' Lake Forest, California, home, investigators reviewed Woodward's cellphone, laptop and social media and found hateful materials against a range of groups and substantial evidence Bernstein was killed because he was gay, Rackauckas said.RELATED: High school classmate charged with murder in death of Penn student"We have no room for this kind of hate in our society," Rackauckas told reporters.Woodward, who is from the upscale seaside city of Newport Beach, has pleaded not guilty to the killing. He is being held on million bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 22.With the change, Woodward faces a maximum potential sentence of life without parole. He previously faced a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in prison if he were convicted.A message was left for Woodward's attorney.RELATED: Missing Penn student found dead in Orange County ParkBernstein went missing in January while visiting his parents in the tight-knit Lake Forest community of Foothill Ranch, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. His body was found in the park nearly a week later buried in a shallow grave.Bernstein went to the park with Woodward the night he disappeared, authorities said. The two had attended the same high school in Orange County. 1754

SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) — Apple is introducing a cheaper version of its smartwatch, its latest attempt to broaden the appeal of its trend-setting products while more consumers are forced to scrimp during ongoing fallout from the pandemic. The scaled-down Apple Watch follows a budget iPhone that came out five months ago as the pandemic caused unemployment rates to soar. Apple took the wraps off the new discount watch in addition to a new high-end model, a next-generation iPad and a new subscription service during a virtual event held Tuesday. The company normally also rolls out its new iPhones at this time of year, but production problems caused by the pandemic have delayed their release until at least October, the Associated Press reports.CEO Tim Cook didn’t mention iPhones during Tuesday’s one-hour presentation recorded at the company’s massive, but now mostly empty, headquarters in Cupertino, California. The Apple Watch has never come close to rivaling the iPhone’s popularity, but it does dominate the market for smartwatches. The new discount model, called the Apple Watch SE, will sell for 9 and be available beginning Friday. The price is a markdown from the 9 that Apple is asking for the next version of its higher end watch, the Series 6.Apple added more features to help the watch monitor its owner’s health, including a sensor that can read blood oxygen levels. The feature, specific to the Series 6, could be timely, given that COVID-19 frequently attacks the lungs.Apple also announced a new fitness subscription service tailored for its watches for per month, as well as a new option that will bundle its existing music, video, news and gaming services into a package that will cost to per month. 1747

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) - The captain of the sister ship to the one that caught fire off the coast of Santa Barbara, killing at least 25, is sticking up for its crew.Ian Higgins is the captain of the Vision, a sister ship nearly identical to the Conception, which caught fire near Santa Cruz island Monday morning. Higgins spoke to 10News after media reports calling the safety protocol of the Conception into question."That vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard annually and also every five years for a more complete inspection," said Higgins, who works for Truth Aquatics. "If you think the Coast Guard would allow a vessel carrying that many passengers to operate without any type of fire suppression system, I don’t know what one would believe."RELATED: 20 bodies recovered from boat fire off coast of Southern California, officials sayRecords show the Conception had no issues after a Coast Guard inspection in February. Higgins said any report that the passengers were locked in the ship is patently false. He said passengers are given safety briefings the morning after they get on the ship. In addition to the regular exit, there is an escape hatch that any human could get through, Higgins said. 1219

SANTA ANA (KGTV and CNS) - Authorities say five people were killed Sunday afternoon when a small plane crashed near a Santa Ana shopping center. The crash happened around 12:29 p.m. in the parking lot of the Staples Supercenter on the 3800 block of South Bristol Street. No one on the ground was hurt. As the plane barreled through the parking lot, it struck at least one unoccupied car, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said. A nearby intersection was closed in all four directions near the crash. The parking lot is shared by Staples, a CVS drug store, a Michaels' decorations store, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch. The crash site is about one mile northwest of the northern end of the runway at John Wayne Orange County Airport. 781
