TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao described Tuesday his visit to Japan as successful, saying it has deepened trust, enhanced cooperation and consolidated the foundation for friendship between the two countries. In an interview with Japanese public broadcaster NHK, the Chinese premier called his visit to Japan "a journey of confidence and hope."Wen said he has achieved the visit's objectives of deepening mutual trust, enhancing cooperation and consolidating the foundation for friendship. "The visit is successful," he said.Important agreements were reached at his talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, including re-establishing a hot line between the heads of the two governments, creating a maritime communication mechanism between the two defense departments and speeding up the establishment of a maritime rescue agreement, Wen said. The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and identified green economy, energy and environmental protection and e-commerce as priority areas for cooperation, he said."Cooperation between China and Japan enjoys broad prospects," said Wen.The Chinese premier also called for promoting bilateral cultural and people-to-people exchanges, saying these exchanges are fundamental to the friendship between the two countries. After concluding a three-day visit to Japan earlier Tuesday, Wen is now in Mongolia for a two-day official visit.

CHENGDU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China Saturday started construction of a center in southwestern China's Sichuan Province to train giant pandas born in captivity to live in the wild. The center is located at Majiagou of Yutang Town, Dujiangyan City, said Zhang Zhihe, head of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base and founder of the center. The center covers an area of 134.87 hectares and will cost 160 million yuan (23.5 million U.S. dollars). After the center is completed, the breeding and research base will put 40 to 50 giant pandas raised in captivity into the center for training and research, according to Zhang. The center will cooperate with the Chengdu breeding and research base, the Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Base, the Dujiangyan Disease Control and Prevention Center for Giant Pandas and the Shaanxi Rescue Center for Endangered Animals. In the experimental zone of the center being built, the giant pandas will be trained to reduce their dependency on humans. But they will still live in cages. After five to 10 years training in the experimental zone, the giant pandas that perform well will be introduced into the "half-natural" zone.In the following five to 10 years, the pandas there will live in tree holes or caves and forage for food. But they will still receive frequent checkups and participate in artificial breeding. Then, only one or two of the giant pandas will have the chance to spend another five to 10 years in a nearly "natural" zone with little human contact. Then they will be released into the nearby giant panda natural reserve, Zhang said.Giant pandas are the world's most endangered species. Some 1,590 panda live in the wild and over 300 pandas are in captivity in China, Zhang said.China started a giant panda training project in 2003 to teach the animals to live in the wild. But the project suffered a major setback when Xiang Xiang, a five-year-old male panda, was found dead in a remote part of the Wolong Nature Reserve in February 2007.Xiang Xiang was released into the wild in April 2006 after nearly three years of training.

URUMQI, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China's support package for the far-west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region unveiled Thursday has become a hot topic for residents of the region who hailed the strategic plans that help bring prosperity to their hometown.Chinese President Hu Jintao said during a central work conference held in Beijing from Monday to Wednesday the region should undergo a spurt in development so that by 2015 its per capita gross domestic product reaches the national average.Incomes and access to basic public services should reach the average level of the country's western regions, he said."I have noticed that 'People's livelihood' is mentioned several times in the package. The improvement of people's living standards can help ease social conflict and therefore ensure a more stable development environment," said Amiti Wushouer, an employee of the region's transport department.A cab driver surnamed Zhang in the regional capital of Urumqi told Xinhua he was particularly interested in the part about the government relaxing policies about using natural gas in Xinjiang."This means the tensions concerning natural gas here will ease, and that's what we Xinjiang people have always wanted," said Zhang, who followed the news about the support plan on the radio.Zhang Man, an experienced stock investor in Urumqi, was thrilled to see the shares of companies based in Xinjiang surge across the board Friday. To boost development in the region, the government will cut taxes for some enterprises in the region, according to the package."The tax cuts are good news for listed Xinjiang companies and companies who have branches here, which will eventually benefit infrastructure construction and industries in the region," said Zhang Man.According to the package, Xinjiang will be the first Chinese region to reform resource taxes. The resource tax for oil and gas produced in Xinjiang will be levied based on price instead of quantity, effectively raising the revenue for the regional government."The resource tax reform will also help save energy and cut emissions," said Zhang Man."We must engage in vigorous economic development, accelerate the pace of development," said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who also attended the meeting.Wen said the fixed asset investment goal for Xinjiang in the government's next five-year plan starting in 2011 will be more than double the amount in the current plan that ends this year.Banks will be encouraged to expand services in the region, he added."We feel this is a new starting point for Xinjiang, and we have to try our best to make the most of this great opportunity," said Hadeerbieke, deputy secretary-general of Altay Prefectural Party Committee in northern Xinjiang.
