SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego city leaders said Tuesday that more than 1,100 people will secure permanent or longer-term housing by the end of the year through Operation Shelter to Home -- the city's COVID-19 homeless shelter at the San Diego Convention Center.The shelter opened its doors in April as a measure to halt the spread of COVID-19 among San Diego's homeless population, and currently houses around 900 people per day, and housed a peak of 1,300 people daily, according to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.Faulconer called the project "a public health success story" at a Tuesday morning news conference, saying only 27 residents and staff tested positive for COVID-19 out of more than 9,300 tests administered since the shelter opened.Officials said that to date, more than 840 individuals and 45 families sheltered at the convention center have obtained housing, while around 400 others will soon be moved into housing units the city secured through the purchase of two hotels in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County will remain in the red tier of the state's four-tier COVID-19 reopening plan for at least another week, the California Department of Public Health confirmed Tuesday.The county's state-calculated, adjusted case rate is 6.8 daily infections per 100,000 residents, up from 6.7 the previous week. The unadjusted case rate was 7.2, up from 7 last Tuesday. The adjusted rate is due to San Diego County's high volume of tests, but still leaves the county on the precipice of the state's most restrictive tier -- purple.The testing positivity percentage is 3%, considerably less than last week, and that number would qualify for the third -- or orange -- tier.To remain in the red tier, the county must continue to have an adjusted case rate of less than 7.0 per 100,000 residents and a testing positivity percentage of less than 5%.A new metric the state released Tuesday is the health equity metric, which finds the positivity rate of the county's least healthy quartile. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee unanimously voted Wednesday to send a suite of proposed regulations on dockless scooters to the full council.Mayor Kevin Faulconer introduced the regulations Oct. 18 after the city spent months wrestling with how to both ensure public safety and allow dockless scooter companies like Bird, Lime, and Razor to continue operating in San Diego.Faulconer's proposal would mandate that scooter companies limit the maximum speed of scooters in high-traffic areas of the city, send monthly data reports to the city detailing things like parking and trip information, educate riders on local traffic laws, and indemnify the city for liability for riders injured within city limits. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The entire passenger and freight rail line between Oceanside and San Diego will be closed at midnight and remain shut down all weekend for improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.Crews will shut down the lines just after midnight Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to SANDAG, which will make several improvements, including work on the Mid-Coast Trolley project, extending the UC San Diego blue line trolley from the Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north toward UC San Diego.Four rail services use the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo coastal rail corridor: North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and the BNSF freight line.Passengers using the Coaster train line are advised to use the BREEZE Route 101 or local buses. Amtrak will offer bus connections from Oceanside to San Diego for passengers with reservations.Crews working on the Mid-Coast Trolley project will remove temporary support structures, build retaining walls, protect slopes and install fencing and cable railing, as well as sewer, water, and drainage pipes.The entire project is expected to be completed late next year.Near the San Diego River Bridge, crews will add nearly a mile of double track across the river to create a continuous 7-mile stretch of double track in the southernmost portion of the coastal rail corridor.During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent noise and lights.Passenger rail service is scheduled to resume for the Monday morning commute. 1569

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported 3,252 COVID-19 infections today, while virus-related hospitalizations continued to increase as the first batch of Moderna vaccines arrived in the area.The number of daily infections reported Monday marked the third- highest daily increase since the pandemic began, following only Friday's 3,611 and Saturday's 3,493. Together with Wednesday's 2,807 cases and Thursday's 2,604, the top five-highest daily case counts have all occurred in the past week.Monday's total also marked the third time the number of daily infections has surpassed 3,000 and the 21st consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. It was also the 14th day overall with more than 2,000 new cases.The new cases gave the county a cumulative total of 129,717 confirmed cases from throughout the pandemic. The county also announced three more COVID-related deaths, raising the overall death toll to 1,283.Another 32 people were hospitalized as of Monday, with one additional person sent to an intensive care unit.
