SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. She is planning a fundraiser in mid November. 1542

SAN DEIGO (KGTV) - A family in City Heights is going to save about 90% on their electric bill thanks to the non-profit GRID Alternatives. The organization installed free solar on their roof for Mother's Day. Erika Rodriguez is a single mother of three and she told 10News she would not have been able to afford solar without the program. She'll own the panels as long as she lives at the house. If she moves, the panel stays. The construction team doing the work is a team of all women volunteers. GRID Alternatives is also hoping to get more women into solar-related jobs. Currently, women only make up 27% of solar jobs.  661

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Torrey Pines High School student who posted threats targeting the school on his Instagram account was sentenced Friday to a year in custody, with at least six months to be served at a residential alcohol and mental health treatment facility.Kevin Matlak, 21, pleaded guilty last month to one count of making a criminal threat.Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon placed Matlak on five years probation and ordered him to stay away from Torrey Pines High and have no contact with three people named in a criminal complaint.RELATED: Former Torrey Pines student faces judge in online threats caseDefense attorney Brian Watkins said Matlak didn't threaten anyone directly, but three former classmates -- whom the defendant didn't know -- read his posts on Instagram and felt threatened by them.The classmates of Matlak's who graduated in 2015 reported the threats to law enforcement on May 30, leading to his arrest."I hate all of you," Matlak wrote in one post, according to Deputy District Attorney Matthew Greco.RELATED: Former Torrey Pines High School student seeking psychiatric help after online threat"Get the (expletive) out of San Diego 2K18 before I find u," the defendant wrote in another post. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Zoo has two new arrivals: a pair of endangered African penguin chicks.The zoo announced Wednesday that the fluffy chicks, named Doug and Barbara, hatched two months ago.The eggs came from two breeding couples. The zoo says it's the first time eggs laid by its adult penguins have hatched there.Staff has been working with the chicks to get them used to humans before they are introduced into the penguin colony in the next few weeks.African penguins are an endangered species. Their numbers have dropped by more than 60% in the past three decades and only 23,000 breeding pairs are known to exist.The decline is blamed on several factors, including disease, habitat destruction and lack of food from overfishing, climate change and pollution. 781

States are turning to stadiums, drive-thrus and possibly even movie theaters as safe options for in-person polling places amid the coronavirus pandemic and fears about mail-in ballots failing to arrive in time to count. The primary season brought voters to an outdoor wedding-style tent in Vermont and the state fairgrounds in Kentucky. The general election is expected to include polling places at NBA arenas nationwide as part of an agreement owners made with players to combat racial injustice. While a surge in mail-in voting is expected, some voters may feel more comfortable casting ballots in person following recent mail delays. 717
