SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University's Interfraternity Council voted this week to ban social gatherings on campus this fall.The Thursday night vote bans all IFC social events and requires that all IFC recruitment events be held virtually to curb the spread of COVID-19. IFC's social moratorium also prevents fraternities from hosting any formal or informal events at chapter facilities or in satellite houses."The fact of the matter is that COVID-19 is currently a very real concern in our SDSU community," Lee Abed, IFC president, said. “Because of this, we would like to ensure that our community sees COVID-19 have as little of an impact as possible. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to halt all social events effective immediately.”The ban only applies to IFC members and does not affect College Panhellenic Association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, or the United Sorority and Fraternity Council. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire.The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173

On Wednesday, it announced the creation of two task forces to address student life and attack issues that may have led to Hernandez's death. About half of the 28 members are university employees and administrators, while about five are current students. Erik Johannesen, a chapter advisor for the Delta Sigma Phi, will participate in the task force on activities and safety. "Fraternities, when they're operating well, they're the great finishing school for every young man that joins one," said Johannesen, who graduated SDSU in 1981.
