(KGTV) -- If you don’t believe cats actually get stuck in trees, just ask the Lakeside Fire Department.The cat somehow managed to climb a tall palm tree Sunday morning in Lakeside but wasn’t able to get back down. Fire crews used an engine and a 65-foot tall ladder to rescue the stranded pet. “This rare incident is an example of our firefighters out in the community doing what needs to be done,” the department said in a post on social media. 471
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. -- Part of the popular RiverWatch restaurant on the Ohio River has vanished, and nobody seems quite sure where it went.The floating restaurant had a tiki bar attached on a separate barge. Authorities don't know if it sank or floated away. A boat normally docked at the restaurant was located downriver, but the tiki bar remained missing Sunday.The Ohio River did reach flood stage over the weekend."They can go back and reel back time and maybe figure out if anything hit, anything happened to force this to happen, because this tiki bar's been intact, I'm told, for 12 years," Lawrenceburg Mayor Kelly Mollaun said.The RiverWatch is a seasonal business, usually operating between April and October. LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving drunk in the death of a motorcycle officer with the California Highway Patrol, officials said Sunday.Michael Callahan of Winchester was booked on the charges in the death of California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Licon, said Officer Steve Carapia.Callahan is suspected of driving drunk Saturday afternoon when he crossed over the right shoulder of Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore, crashing into Licon and a car he had pulled over for speeding.Licon died at a nearby hospital. Eleni Kounalakis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the state Capitol, and the California Highway Patrol is holding a bell tribute ceremony in his honor on Monday.Carapia, who knew Licon for six years, said the sergeant was well-liked and known for his work ethic and a distinct and quirky high-pitched laugh."He had a great sense of humor," Carapia said. "You could hear him laughing from the sergeant's office. You could hear him coming down the hallway ... Just an all-around great human being."He said Licon loved his job and the fact that his office was on a motorcycle."This is a tough one," he said. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office released the identities of the two men killed in a paragliding accident over the weekend. The ME identified the victims as 43-year-old Glenn Johnny Peter Bengtsson, of Carlsbad, and Raul Gonzalez Valerio, 61, of Laguna Hills.Questions still remain regarding the double fatal collision at Torrey Pines Gliderport on Saturday afternoon. The two certified pilots were flying their paragliders when they collided into each other, fell into a cliff, and died, authorities said.RELATED: 2 paragliders dead after colliding in mid-air, crashing into cliffMany who were at the Gliderport said Saturday's weather conditions were absolutely perfect, so they do not believe the incident was weather-related. While many people were flying, they said there were not enough people in the air at the time, so there wasn’t any aerial traffic jam. They both were aware of the rules -- to keep a safe distance between each other, and that the glider along the ocean needs to make way for the one flying along the cliffs, who has the right-of-way. So what exactly happened? Many 10News spoke to said it must have been a freak accident. Now, the Torrey Pines Gliderport staff, San Diego police, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, and the Medical Examiner's Office are working to find answers. Board of Education US Supreme Court case that ended segregation in schools, has died, a funeral home spokesman said.Brown died Sunday afternoon in Topeka, Kansas, Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel spokesman Tyson Williams said. She was 75 years old.Brown was 9 years old when her father, Oliver Brown, tried to enroll her at Sumner Elementary School, then an all-white school in Topeka, Kansas.When the school blocked her enrollment her father sued the Topeka Board of Education. Four similar cases were combined with Brown's complaint and presented to the Supreme Court as Oliver L. Brown et al v. Board of Education of Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, et al.The court's landmark ruling in May 1954 -- that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" -- led to the desegregation of the US education system. Thurgood Marshall, the NAACP's special counsel and lead counsel for the plaintiffs, argued the case before the Supreme Court.Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer acknowledged Brown's contribution to American history."Sixty-four years ago a young girl from Topeka brought a case that ended segregation in public schools in America.
