BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's President John Evans Atta Mills arrived in Beijing on Sunday evening, kicking off his state visit to China.During his six-day China trip, Mills will hold talks or meet with Chinese leaders including President Hu Jintao and top legislator Wu Bangguo.Besides Beijing, he will visit southwest China's Chongqing municipality, southern city of Shenzhen and the nation's economic hub Shanghai.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged Tuesday the European Union (EU) to objectively and fairly treat the RMB exchange rate issue as that would benefit the EU, China, and the world economy.Wen made the remarks while meeting the Euro Group troika, including Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn.The meeting took place on the sidelines of the two-day eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels as China is under external pressure to appreciate its currency.Wen said China would further reform its formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to increase the currency's flexibility.China's central bank has announced on June 19 a series of steps of reforms. The Chinese currency has so far strengthened by about 2 percent against the U.S. dollar.China would also continue to expand import from the EU and strive to balance the trade, said Wen, adding that China was committed to transforming its economic development pattern, restructuring the economy and increasing domestic demands.Wen called on both sides to develop healthy ties from a strategic perspective as the EU has become China's largest trading partner while China stands as the EU's important exporting market.As the world economy was gradually recovering with uncertainties still hovering high, China and the EU should work together to combat the international financial crisis, Wen added.The Euro Group leaders appreciated China's support for the euro and the euro zone, saying the EU and China were good partners and enjoy extensive common interests.They also said the EU rejected both trade protectionism and currency war, and agreed differences and problems should be solved by dialogues.In a speech to the Greek parliament on Monday, Premier Wen said China supported a stable euro and would not reduce its euro-bond holdings.The three Euro Group leaders also held talks with China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren and central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan here on Monday. GUANGZHOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Devastating mud-slides triggered by historic rainfalls were blamed for the heavy casualty toll -- 70 dead and 65 missing -- in south China's Guangdong Province when typhoon Fanapi battered the region earlier this week, a government report said Saturday.The loss caused by mud-flows and landslides in Guangdong's mountainous western region is "very serious", said a disaster assessment report conducted by provincial disaster relief authorities. BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature Sunday initiated a nationwide inspection over Agricultural Techniques Promotion Law in an effort to boost the development of the country's vast rural area while ensuring the nation's food security.Three inspection teams from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) will travel to six provinces and municipalities for supervision of the inspection in late August and September. Another eight teams from provincial level legislatures will be authorized to supervise the enforcement of the Agricultural Techniques Promotion Law and the Seed Law.Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said the inspection teams should push local governments forward to pay more attention to popularizing agricultural techniques, transform techniques into increased agricultural output and raise the incomes of farmers.Promoting agricultural techniques and increasing technology's contribution to agricultural development is the fundamental method to resolve the agricultural difficulties caused by limited resources and markets in China, said Uyunqimg, Vice Chairwoman of the NPC Standing Committee.The Agricultural Techniques Promotion Law was passed by the top legislature and began to be put into use in 1993, which aims at promoting more adoption of scientific and technological achievements in agricultural production to assure the modernization of the nation's agriculture.Statistics show the ratio of scientific and technological contributions to agricultural growth in China has increased from 26 percent in 1993 to 51 percent in 2009.

BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The quota shift, or the voting power redistribution of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is just the start of IMF reform, a senior Chinese foreign affairs official said here Friday."G-20 leaders have pleged that progress should be made in terms of IMF quota reform prior to the Seoul summit, and now we will honor the commitment," said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai at a news briefing on China's outlook for the G20 summit in Seoul next week.At a G-20 finance ministers' meeting held last month, participants agreed to shift six percent of the IMF quota to emerging or under-represented countries such as China, India and Brazil, from developed economies."This is obvious progress," Cui commented on the proposal forged at the minister-level meeting, adding that the Chinese side hoped the IMF's board would agree on the quota transfer."China is one of the under-represented countries and it's rational and sensible to give China more quota," said the vice foreign minister.China would not try to maximize its own interests, but seek an all-win situation with other emerging economies and other IMF members, Cui added.Cui said the quota shift was far from the end of the IMF reform and he looked forward to more changes to the financial institution."This is not the end, not even the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning," Cui said.Many countries have said that the way to calculate the quota itself needs to be reformed, as well as the IMF governance structure.
