SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 75,000 homes in San Diego are in areas that pose a "high" or "extreme" risk of wildfire, according to a new study by CoreLogic.That's the third most homes in the US, behind only Los Angeles and Riverside.In San Diego, the study found that it would cost .81 billion to rebuild all those homes.The news comes as San Diego, and California as a whole, are in the midst of a relatively tame wildfire season. According to Cal Fire, there have been 4,9267 wildfires so far this year. That's well below the pace of the last two years, when there were 7,571 fires in 2018 and 9,133 fires in 2017.Similarly, the amount of land burned by the fires is down in 2019. So far, 117,586 acres have been scorched. In 2018, the total number was 1,671,203 acres. In 2017, 1,240,606 acres were burned.Cal Fire says cooler temperatures and higher than normal humidity caused the number of wild fires to drop this year."When humidity is up, the fire doesn't burn as aggressively as it could if they were lower," says Cal Fire Captain Isaac Sanchez. "That's played a big factor for us this year."But, Sanchez warns that people shouldn't look at the low numbers and think the risk is also low. He says the next few months will have prime conditions for a devastating fire."We've seen the hottest days we're going to see, the temperatures have been warm, the humidity has been low," says Sanchez. "So the fuels that are in the hillsides right now are receptive to fires."Sanchez says people should remain fire-ready. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead and police are searching for a suspect Saturday after a shooting in the Chollas Creek neighborhood.San Diego Police said the shooting occurred at about 2:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of University Ave. A 26-year-old Hispanic man was in an argument with a suspect at the interaction of 52nd St. and University Ave., according to witnesses, where the altercation continued toward the 4000 block of 52nd St.At that point, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim, police said.The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries.The suspect fled, heading west on University Ave.No suspect description was available.Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call SDPD 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 88-580-8477. 787

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect Tuesday they say threatened a woman with a gun in an hotel bathroom. According to police, the incident happened in a bathroom at the Hilton on the 4200 block of Taylor Street in Old Town.Police say the man threatened the woman with a semi-automatic gun.Initially a man who matched that description was detained after a short foot chase. Police say he ran for unknown reasons but was quickly released when they determined he was not the attacker.Authorities describe the suspect as a black man in his mid-20s who is five feet, eight inches tall, was wearing a gray shirt, tan pants, a light colored backpack and has short hair.The suspect is wanted for brandishing a weapon, battery and assault with the attempt to commit a sexual offense. 806

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead after his SUV careened off Interstate 5 near Pacific Beach Tuessday.A driver was traveling on northbound I-5 near Garnet Ave. just before 2 p.m. when a witness tells 10News the white Toyota RAV 4's passenger-side wheels became caught on the freeway guardrail. As the vehicle continued it fell off I-5, traveled down an embankment, and landed on its top on Garnet Ave. below the freeway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New advertisements against Measure B riled up supporters, who spoke out against the massive development Friday.The commercial states, "Measure B the Newland Sierra project, is a luxury development," something supporters vehemently deny."What I think is disingenuous is making people feel fearful of what can happen in this development," supporter Melinda Vasquez said.Friday, dozens gathered in Kearny Mesa to advocate for Newland Sierra's development project. She is a first generation American (her parents moved from Mexico) and a teacher. They said the development will have a spread of apartments for seniors and low low income, affordable town-homes, and individual homes. The highest bracket in the chart showed 1,570 or more.
