(CNN) -- New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham wants to provide state residents with free tuition to public colleges, a plan that, if passed by the state legislature, would add New Mexico to the growing list of Democratic-led states to offer free higher education.Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, announced the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship on Wednesday while speaking at an education summit at Central New Mexico Community College. The plan would provide free undergraduate tuition at New Mexico colleges for in-state residents and aims to cover nearly 55,000 students a year. It would cover tuition and fees for recent high school graduates at four-year public colleges as well as recent high school graduates and returning adult learners at two-year community colleges."We're going to deliver a major boost. F-R-E-E, let's make it proof," Lujan Grisham said drawing a standing ovation and applause from the audience. "It's been a really long time since I crossed the stage for my diploma at the University of New Mexico, but even though I spelled it out very slowly, I still know what FREE spells and I also know that free college for New Mexico students is the right thing to do."The program is estimated to cost between to million, according to Lujan Grisham's office, and would be paid for in part by federal grants and the New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarship. Lujan Grisham's office said the state legislature -- where Democrats control both houses -- will need to decide how to fund the rest of the program and will take up the matter in early 2020.The plan would make New Mexico the latest state to join the movement for free college tuition. New York became the first state to make tuition free for two- and four-year colleges in April 2017, and in August, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation that will provide free tuition for two years of community college to first-time, full-time California students.College affordability is also a key topic on the 2020 campaign trail. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders announced a plan that would make public college tuition free if he were elected president, and in March, Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts signed on to co-sponsor Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz's Debt-Free College Act, which would establish a matching grant to states that commit to helping students pay for the full cost of attendance -- including tuition, books and other expenses -- without taking out loans. 2529

(KGTV) - Did Donald Trump tweet in 2012 that the president should be impeached if the Dow drops 1,000 points in 2 days? There is no evidence to support that.A search of Trump's tweets on November 6, 2012 shows no record of him sending that out. While it's possible he deleted it, there was no mention of that tweet before last week. 339

(KGTV) -- If you grew up in San Diego, you've probably heard of, visited or passed by the Living Coast Discovery Center off Interstate 5 in the South Bay."We focus on local wildlife so we have species have like Tido, the barn owl here, reptiles, sea turtles and aquatic species," said Rachel Harper, LCDC's marketing and communications manager. For over three decades, the facility educated communities, students and families about wildlife and protecting the planet."The animals are the hook but we’re talking about sustainability and zero waste. Those things and how we can make not just our planet, but our backyard in San Diego more sustainable for everyone and that includes compost workshops and those sort of things," Harper said.Since the pandemic forced them to close in March, their animals and their mission faced uncertainty. They couldn't open because half of their facility is indoors."This is certainly a worrisome time for a lot of organizations that rely on general admissions and school revenue," said Harper. They've hosted animal encounters and workshops since March but it wasn't enough."We act as a home for them so it's important we remain open for their sake but also so we can continue to fulfill our mission of connecting San Diegans with our local wildlife," Harper said. The center needed to raise 0,000 to fund projects like their breed and re-release program, and continue research on threatened species. They asked the public they've served to help with donations or register for online programming. 1537

(KGTV) — A woman was arrested Friday after police said she threw apparent blood onto the state Senate floor.According to California Highway Patrol, the woman threw a feminine hygiene product containing what appeared to be blood from the second floor public gallery.CHP did not say what the woman's motivation was, but referred to her as a "demonstrator," the Associated Press reported. The act happened as hundreds of protesters at the Capitol rallied against a recently passed law cracking down on fraudulent medical exemptions for vaccinations. The AP also reported the woman had yelled "that's for the dead babies" before throwing the red liquid. Several senators were reportedly hit. Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins called the behavior "unacceptable."The state Senate relocated to a committee room to complete their session. The woman was charged with assault, vandalism, and disrupting the orderly conduct of official business at the state Capitol, according to CHP. 986
