SARASOTA Co., Fla. — A brawl between two moms at a school bus stop landed both in the hospital. One of those mothers was Tiffani Cruz. She was recently released from the hospital.“It was self-defense over an incident that made no sense," she said. While North Port Police say it started over an argument about parenting, Cruz claims she and the other mother have had issues before. She says two weeks ago, she confronted that mom for yelling at another child at the bus stop. But Tuesday morning, their verbal arguments went too far.“My heart was racing!” said Eithan Cruz, who is of no relation to Tiffani Cruz. The child and his brother, Bairon Velazquez, witnessed the fight from the back window of their school bus.“Her face was bleeding and stuff,” Eithan said.“I looked away," Bairon said..Cruz admits she hit the other mom with her mug. Police have not identified the other woman. “I went to run and that’s when she picked up the glass, ran at me and stabbed me twice in my arm, once at my wrist and in back of my shoulder," Cruz said. Both parents ended up in the hospital, but paramedics airlifted the other woman to the hospital with a serious cut to her throat.“She got this close to my face nudged me with her nose and when she nudged me with her nose— it was her fist going up so my fist was going up," Cruz said when asked why she felt she acted in self-defense.Sarasota County Schools is offering counselors after several dozen elementary-aged students witnessed the violent fight.“I regret the whole incident, there’s no reason it should have happened. We’re adults," Cruz said.Investigators say charges are pending.  1678

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) — One man was killed in a shooting involving a Border Patrol officer Friday near the Las Americas Premium Outlets.Just before 6 p.m., a Border Patrol agent assigned to the San Diego Sector shot an unidentified 30-year-old man in the area of Dairy Mart Rd. and Camino De La Plaza, close to the international border, according to Aaron Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent with United States Border Patrol in San Diego.Heitke said the man was illegally trying to enter the U.S. west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.During the arrest, an altercation between the man and agent began, during which the agent fired his service weapon, striking the man in the torso, according to Heitke. The details surrounding what led to the fight haven’t been released at this time. The agent received minor injuries, according to San Diego Police. That agent is not being identified at this time, police added. At about 6:25 p.m., first responders pronounced the man dead, Heitke added. The victim has been identified but his name was not released. He was described as an adult Mexican national.SDPD officers were also called to the scene. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - Doorbell camera video of a coyote following a man on a dog walk in Santee may be another example of coyotes becoming more aggressive in the area.On Monday after 9 p.m. on a quiet residential street, Ring doorbell camera video captures a man walking his dog. Moments later, something emerges from the shadows. It a coyote, and it's in an hurry. The video posted on the Ring app is titled "Beware coyote chasing a man with dog." That's exactly what appears to be happening. In the video, the coyote runs down the street before cutting in the man's direction. It's not clear if the coyote did catch up to the man or dog.Last week, 10News reported on Michelle Cimmarrusti's morning walk with Presley, an 8-year-old Silky Terrier. It unfolded on Palm Glen Drive, about a half mile from the site of the newest video. Two coyotes emerged from a bush and attacking Presley, while he was on his leash. Presley lunged, snapping his collar. He and the coyotes would end in a condo complex, where Presley was killed.Presley was the second dog killed by a coyote in the neighborhood in the last few weeks. Experts say coyotes attacking a leashed dog is a sign they're getting more aggressive in an area, and less afraid of humans, whether is food scarcity or the unintentional feeding of coyotes. 1315

SAN YSIDRO (KGTV) -- Across the street from a bustling shipping depot on Otay Mesa Drive, there’s a junkyard lined with broken-down trailers and motorhomes. It’s where 16 of the homeless students lived while attending the San Ysidro School District last year, the district with the highest percentage of homeless students in San Diego County. Nearly one out of every three SYSD students was classified as homeless.“Where you see the steering wheel, where the driver usually sits in a motorhome, it’s divided into a bedroom and usually that’s where all the children sleep,” said SYSD Student and Family Services Manager Veronica Medina.Medina is tasked with verifying homeless students' living situations. In the 2018-19 school year, she determined 80 students were living in trailers parked on campgrounds, 71 were living in hotels or motels, and 31 were unsheltered in parks or gas stations.RELATED: Homeless students in San Diego County likely undercounted, audit findsThe vast majority of students considered homeless -- 1,130 students -- were “doubled up” or couch surfing with another family for economic reasons, the most common designation under California’s broad definition of homelessness.“In Southern San Diego, in San Ysidro, we have the highest rate of poverty and because of that and knowing how expensive it is to live in San Diego County, it is causing quite a crisis with homelessness,” said SYSD Superintendent Dr. Gina Potter.Families facing economic hardship have few options in San Ysidro, with long waiting lists for low-income housing. The wait for Section 8 housing in the area is eight to ten years, the district said.Although a report this month by the California State Auditor found many districts are undercounting -- and therefore underserving -- homeless students, San Ysidro has built a coalition of 40 partner agencies to help homeless students with everything from free uniforms, backpacks and tutoring, to transportation costs. RELATED: San Diego college students cope with homelessness“We are very proud of the services we provide to our homeless students,” Potter said. The district receives a 5,000 grant to help fund some of its homeless initiatives, but it leans heavily on donations and partner agencies, Medina said.Among those outsourced resources is healthcare. Recently, the district bussed 400 students to get eye exams and glasses. SYSD also brings healthcare directly to campus, with a mobile health clinic offering on-site check-ups through a partnership with San Ysidro Health.“It’s not only providing the services, but making them available for the families,” said San Ysidro Health director of patient engagement Dr. Alejandrina Arevalo. The district helps find transitional housing for families through a partnership with Casa Familiar. The non-profit offers qualifying families three months of housing, rent free.RELATED: North County mom digs family out of homelessnessIt “can’t meet, unfortunately, the big need that there is in this community, but we really do try to prioritize families in that program,” said Casa Familiar programs director Tiernan Seaver. “Specifically [families] with children that are in the school district here so that they continue their education in the school district here.”Medina has worked as the district’s homeless liaison for 14 years for a reason. She experienced homelessness first-hand at age 12.“My parents divorced and after that we lived in a hotel,” she said. “I can understand and I empathize with the students, and I also empathize with the families.”That empathy allows the San Ysidro-raised school official to offer perhaps the most important service of all: “I give them hope,” she said. “Not to give up and to continue to work harder. And yes, there is light at the end of that tunnel,” Medina said. 3811

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A report of another car found burning in a driveway is raising questions about a possible fire starter targeting vehicles in Santee. On Shaggybark Drive, Michelle Genshaw and her husband were pulling out of their home two weeks ago -- just before 4:30 in the morning -- when they saw flames in their neighbor's driveway.  A 2007 Acura TL was on fire."It looked odd because there were flames coming out of the front and back of the car, like two separates fires," said Genshaw.Genshaw's husband banged on the door, waking the Arnold family.  Together, they put the fire out with a hose a few minutes later.  Catherine Arnold is thankful the fire didn't spread, but she tells us the car is a total loss."It's really upsetting.  It was my father's car and he passed away and it was the last thing belonging to my dad that I had," said Arnold.Sheriff's investigators were called out and concluded it was arson."We talked to police and they said they smelled gas," said Genshaw.A week and a half later, car alarms sounded along with a Mother's Day inferno on Pearlwood Road.  Neighbors discovered a newly purchased Ford Mustang convertible torched in a driveway.  Mason jars with a flammable liquid were found near the gas tank. A rag was discovered in the car.  The two incidents were about 2 miles apart.10news asked investigators about both arsons, and they said they're looking into a possible link, but have yet to connect them.  Meanwhile, residents in two neighborhoods are now on edge.    "It's really scary to think that could be going on in our neighborhood," said Genshaw. If you have information on the cases, call the Santee Sheriff's substation at 619-956-4000 or Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477.  1794
