Since she was just a little girl, Connie Moultroup has had the same Christmas wish every year: to meet her biological mother. This week -- after 69 long years -- she finally did, all thanks to a DNA ancestry kit.Genevieve Purinton, now 88, gave birth to Moultroup in 1949 at a hospital in Indiana. When she asked the staff if she could see her baby, they informed her the child had not survived."Because she was an unwed mother, she was told that I had died. She continued with her life not knowing I was still alive," Moultroup told CNN. It was not an uncommon practice at the time, as author Ann Fessler documented in the book "The Girls Who Went Away."Moultroup was taken to an orphanage and later adopted by a couple from Santa Barbara, California. But her adoptive parents passed away a few years later, when she was just 5-years-old."Her adoptive mother died of cancer, and shortly after, her adoptive father was diagnosed with a heart condition," Bonnie Chase, Moultroup's daughter, told CNN.Moultroup's adoptive father remarried, Chase said, but the woman ended up being abusive to her new daughter."So the whole time, she just wanted to find her actual mother to rescue her from that horrible situation," Chase said.After years of searching, Chase decided to give her mother an Ancestry.com DNA testing kit for Christmas last year -- and it ended up changing her life. Moultroup says it was the best Christmas present she has ever received."It took me a while to use it, but when I finally got the results I went from having only three known relatives (a daughter and two grandchildren), to 1,600 relatives. I was floored," Moultroup said.The results led her to a distant cousin. The two connected, and Moultroup began asking her questions about the family tree."I told her my mother's name was Genevieve Purinton, and my cousin said, "Oh, that's my aunt. And she's still alive, living on her own," Moultroup said. "I couldn't believe it. I was going to meet my mother."Moultroup took her mom's information and sent her a card with contact numbers. On September 8, her mother called."I was at church that day, and I never want to leave early, but that day I did. Literally, 20 minutes after getting home, my mother calls," Moultroup said.They agreed to meet each other, and on Monday, the two finally reunited at Purinton's home in a retirement community in Tampa, Florida."I met my mother and my cousin in person, and we cried. It was just a crying fest," Moultroup said. "Not everybody has this kind of outcome when looking for their parents, but I recommend you give it a try, you don't know what will happen."The story doesn't end there, though. In January, Moultroup plans to meet two half-sisters from her father's side."We knew nothing about our family, it was just us three," Chase said. His staff said using a private plane allowed him to maximize his time on the ground managing hurricane preparation and recovery efforts.“Commercial travel is not always feasible,” Price spokeswoman Charmaine Yoest said.We asked other members of the president’s Cabinet if they travel for official business on private jets, instead of taking a commercial flight or government plane. The responses show a different approach to private jet use, varying by agency.Cabinet secretaries who have not flown taxpayer-funded private jets include HUD Secretary Ben Carson, Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, according to their spokespeople.Perdue has flown to disaster sites on military aircraft and to remote areas on forest service aircraft, his office said. "You go through so many different feelings and then the worst part is the morning because you just wake up and you keep feeling like it's still real. You just want to wake up and feel like it didn't happen and it did."The couple is living a nightmare, just days after they thought they'd achieved the American dream. They're staying with family in Solana Beach at a time they thought they'd have closed on their dream home in Carlsbad, where they hoped to create a happy childhood for Deklan."All of this was for him," Nicole says. "The house, with the yard, with schools, and so he could have a sibling."But instead, their roughly 5,000 down payment for that home, 60 percent of the purchase price, is now in the hands of a hacker in an account in Singapore. The money, which came from prior home ownership and inheritance, was supposed to go to lowering the couple's cost-of-living. Nicole is a nurse and Kevin is a chef, so they hoped to make the move more manageable. "It's literally all the money that we had to get this house so that we could have a low enough mortgage payment that we could afford," said Nicole. Nicole says she started receiving fake emails from a hacker posing as employees at her escrow company and her real estate agent, who was away due to a death in the family. Kevin says the emails were sent with duplicate signatures and addresses that appeared as contacts in their phones when clicked. The Noars are taking specific aim at their escrow company, saying an employee e-mailed them official wire instructions via unsecured email. The instructions did not have account numbers, but the Noars say the hacker got that email, duplicated the document, and sent it back with account numbers to a bitcoin exchange. The couple took that document to the bank, which did not catch the bitcoin clue. After the wire, Nicole called the escrow company she thought she had wired the money to, which says should have triggered them since they never actually sent her instructions. "They called back, they called to tell me what time the notary would be here the next day to sign our loan docs," Nicole said. The couple is now weighing their legal options and therefore asked 10News not to identify the escrow company. They have also contacted the FBI.The FBI says Californians are the biggest target of these kinds of scams. Many escrow companies have warnings saying never to accept wire instructions via e-mail, and to instead call. Another strategy is to forward all emails to the escrow agent, not just hit reply without looking at the address. In 2019, 50,000 Californians fell victim to internet financial scams, losing more than 3 million, the highest number in the U.S, according to the bureau. "Typically, escrow will send the wire instructions to the buyer via some sort of secured email, so be very suspicious if you receive (unsecured) wire instructions from an escrow or title company, especially if the escrow or title company is not the same title company or the same escrow company that you're dealing with," said Mark Goldman, a loan officer at C2 Financial. SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A 61-year-old man shot a female relative in the leg during an argument Sunday afternoon in Spring Valley.The woman, whose identity was withheld, was struck in the left leg just before 4 p.m. at 1605 Presioca St., said San Diego County sheriff Sgt. Elizabeth Montoya.Danny Goodman was detained by deputies for the shooting and a weapon was recovered at the scene, a sergeant said. The relationship of the two was not immediately explained.The woman was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment. Goodman was also taken to a hospital after complaining of shortness of breath, Montoya said. 621
