SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Friday on Interstate 5 at the southern end of Balboa Park.The traffic fatality occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, near state Route 163 in downtown San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.It was unclear why the pedestrian, who died at the scene, was on the interstate, CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro said.The fatality left three northbound lanes blocked in the area and tangled traffic for miles through late morning. 544

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a large commercial building in the Morena area Friday, causing extensive damage and sending a thick plume of smoke into the air near Mission Bay.The blaze in the 1200 block of Morena Boulevard erupted about 5:40 p.m., the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.Police closed down the north-south street to through traffic while firefighters worked to subdue the intense flames.Crews were still working to get the blaze under control as of 6:30 p.m. and trying to get inside the two-story structure to check on a report there might be someone inside, according to SDFRD public affairs.There were no immediate reports of injuries. 677

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Multiple local and nonprofit organizations around San Diego County will host Christmas meals Tuesday for underserved and low-income residents.Salvation Army San Diego will host its 35th annual Christmas meal, beginning at 11 a.m. at Golden Hall at 202 C St. The organization expects hundreds of volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers will escort attendees to their seats and serve them a traditional holiday meal.Serving Seniors will also host its annual Christmas meal for low- income and homeless San Diego County seniors, many of whom would otherwise spend the holiday alone. About 350 seniors will enjoy a meal of Cornish hen with Mornay sauce, cornbread dressing, whipped potatoes, green peas and carrot cake, according to the organization. Shane Harris, former president of the National Action Network, will host his second annual community Christmas breakfast at the National Black Contractors Association. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was struck and killed Sunday morning by a hit- and-run motorist in an SUV, in the Sherman Heights community of San Diego, a police officer said.The vehicle was going eastbound in the No. 1 lane in the 1800 block of Market Street, where a pedestrian was standing in the street or crossing Market Street at 1:55 a.m., said San Diego police officer Robert Heims.The vehicle struck the pedestrian and dragged him for approximately 100 feet eastbound on Market Street, Heims said.The motorist fled the location eastbound on Market Street and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.The vehicle was possibly a silver GMC Envoy or similar model, with front end damage.Anyone with any information regarding the death was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 798
