OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Just a few blocks from the Oceanside Pier and the surfers who speckle the waters around it you'll find one of the richest troves of surfing history in the world.The California Surf Museum was established in Oceanside in 1986, chronicling a sport many see as a way of life."Surfing goes back thousands of years," says museum president Jim Kempton, a surfing legend and editor of Surfing Magazine in the 1970s. Kempton's never-ending love for the sport is evident as he leads 10News on a tour of the colorful museum that blooms with the science, art, and history of surfing."You start with these ancient Alaias (uh-lee-yuhs)," said Kempton, gesturing to a tall, thick surfboard made of Kola wood from Hawaii. "It was just part of the Hawaiian lifestyle. They did it all the time and women did it as much as men."LIFE IN OCEANSIDE: Oceanside's brewery scene helps spur city's growthThe earliest board designs, dating back some 4,000 years, were sometimes more than 20 feet in length. "They were very very long at the time," said Kempton. "And that was just the expectation that people had. They didn't imagine that people could stand on anything smaller than that." But that would change — along with so many other things — during the era of groovy, when imagination and new materials like foam and fiberglass redefined the sport. "Surfing was really in the same sort of youth movement that everything in the 60s was," said Kempton. "From swallow tails and pin tails. You know, flat bottoms, beveled bottoms, V-bottoms, all these different things." Modifications would eventually make the sport accessible to the disabled as well. "Some people lay with their feet flat. They've got handles on different places. They've got chin rests for some of them," according to Kempton.But of all the boards on display at the California Surf Museum, there's one that stands out for its literal breathtaking quality. "You know we can always tell when people get to this part of the museum if we're out in the front," said Kempton. "Because you hear the gasps." It's the actual board 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton was on when she was attacked by a 15-foot tiger shark off the coast of Kauai in 2003.Kempton says the board found its way to the museum through an old friendship. "Her dad and I were friends in college back, you know, 20 years before. And I ran into him and I was telling him about the museum and he said, 'Well, would you like Bethany's board?' I said 'which one?' And he said, 'You know. "And the ability to come back from something that is really a traumatic experience and triumph over it. She's surfing now on 40-foot waves at Jaws on Maui with one arm." The ultimate victory for a surf culture that sees life as a wave. "All energy moves in waves," says Kempton. "But the only place in the entire universe where people actually harness that, and ride them, is on ocean waves." 3420

Now more than ever, the impact of not having enough minority schoolteachers is part of the conversation, with efforts focused on undoing systemic disparities.“For so long, I think people have been uncomfortable having discussions about race and how that influences not only students but teachers in a school setting, where you are learning about what society is supposed to look like,” said Eric Duncan, Senior Data and Policy Analyst at The Education Trust.Duncan is part of The Education Trust’s Education Diversity Team, a group that advocates for higher achievement of all students, particularly those of color or living in poverty.Research in Sage Journals found minority students have more favorable perceptions of minority teachers, which can translate to better academic outcomes. Yet, teachers of color make up just 20% of the workforce. Close to 40% of all schools don't have a single teacher of color.Meanwhile, racial and ethnic minority students now make up a majority of the public-school population.Schools have made gains recently hiring more teachers of color, but retention is an issue because they leave the workforce at a higher rate than white teachers. The Education Trust found that's in part due to working conditions.Minority teachers often take on additional roles outside of teaching that they are not paid or even recognized for.School culture is another significant factor.“Discipline policies that educators of color are frankly tired of seeing and our country is tired of seeing the way that students are over disciplined, are misunderstood, particularly students of color, are driven out of school, are suspended for minor misconducts,” said Duncan.The Education Trust has recommendations on how schools can retain teachers of color, starting with collecting data by race and ethnicity on recruitment, hiring and retention. And also, providing scholarships, loan forgiveness or repayment, and relocation incentives.The group also suggests developing leaders that promote positive working conditions for a diverse workforce, and ensuring curriculum, learning and work environments are inclusive of all racial ethnic groups. 2162

Open bars, lavish dinners and in-person get-togethers will likely be out of the question for many companies this year when it comes to planning end-of-the-year celebrations. So, it's a little mini concert. I think employers are getting very creative," said Frydenlund.Valerie Keels works at the company Gavi, which has offices in Switzerland and Washington, D.C. Keels is working with a team of five other people to put on a virtual end-of-the-year office event. Complete with a virtual cartoonist, personal videos and more for their 350 employees."I think it serves a purpose. It's a reminder to those people who are more solitary, and okay being that way, that yeah, we’re all in this together and we can still be collegial and still have fun together," said Keels.The biggest focus for Keels and her team is making sure their employees come together to celebrate all of their hard work."It's so important that organizations either foster or maintain that connectedness because it's so important for the motivation and even well-being of staff to be connected to both the organization and the colleagues," said Keels.For some companies in lieu of holiday party, extra vacation days will be offered, as a way to show employees their appreciation during this unprecedented year."Time away is definitely something that's an added benefit that people can provide. You don't have to have a celebration or try to mimic what we had before, but why not give the gift of time," said Frydenlund.Frydenlund says while some companies will still be hosting holiday parties as usual, she says many will likely consider the pandemic and proceed with caution."When you start to think about what is the intention around celebrating around the holidays and I’ve always wanted to make sure you’re inclusive in doing so because everybody celebrates things differently. And just like this entire year, it's giving employers more time and awareness to think about well how do we do that," said Frydenlund.Coming together or giving back to so many who've worked especially hard and gone through so much in today's new normal. 2812

  

On the same day Puerto Rico's governor celebrated power generation on the island reaching 50% of capacity, the lights went out in the San Juan metro area.The source of Wednesday's outage was the same main north-south transmission line that failed last Thursday, leaving swaths of the capital without power for hours, officials said.But the latest interruption appeared to cover a larger area, including Bayamon, Guaynabo, San Juan, Carolina and other municipalities, said Justo González Torres, director of power generation for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, known as PREPA.The cause of the outage was an unspecified "technical failure," he said.González said the authority hoped to restore power in the coming hours.The outage came hours after Gov. Ricardo Rosselló tweeted that the power authority had completed its stated goal of 50% generation for Wednesday.San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz?promptly replied via Twitter, telling the governor the percentage of power generation "has just changed" and the municipal medical center and other buildings were in the dark.Shortly after noon, PREPA tweeted that power had been restored to the medical center and several other locations.With the latest outage, power generation plummeted from 50% to 22% of capacity, PREPA said on Twitter Wednesday afternoon. It later rose to 29%, the utility company said, noting that the goal is to reach 80% by the end of the month.González said capacity had reached 49.9% on Tuesday, and 50% for part of Wednesday morning.
