More than 600,000 people signed up for Obamacare in the first four days of open enrollment, far outpacing last year's rate.Nearly a quarter were enrolling for the first time, while the rest renewed coverage, according to statistics released Thursday by the Trump administration. The period covers Nov. 1 through Nov. 4.The data provides the first look at how Obamacare will fare under an administration determined to dismantle the health reform law. While Trump officials are maintaining the federal exchange, healthcare.gov, they have slashed open enrollment advertising and support. MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee’s top cop has been demoted. Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales is now Captain Morales. The Fire and Police Commission could have taken a number of actions against Morales as they voted on his discipline Thursday night including firing him. Instead, they chose a demotion.“The chief, effective immediately, is demoted to the rank of captain,” said Steve DeVougas, chair of the Fire and Police Commission.Morales listened in virtually as every member voted for his demotion. He never made a comment. However, some of the commissioners weighed in.“I feel you have personally not worked with us as the oversight board,” said Nelson Soler, a commissioner with the Fire and Police Commission.Over a month ago, the FPC issued 11 directives to Morales in order for him to keep his job. They included things like increased transparency around investigations and reviewing the policy on using teargas and pepper spray against demonstrators following recent incidents in Milwaukee.Several other directives are meant to create more communication between Morales and the civilian panel. Morales will be required to attend all FPC meetings and allow commissioners to visit his office at their discretion. The FPC also demands police respond to all of its open records requests.“His conduct is unbecoming filled with ethical lapses and flawed decision. Making it inconsistent with some charged with leading the Milwaukee Police Department,” said Ray Robakowski, a commissioner with the Fire and Police Commission.The last few days exposed a deep rift between Morales and FPC Chair Steven DeVougas. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett described it as a feud. But the issues clearly went deeper than a disagreement between the two as every member of the commission agreed Morales needed to go.Assistant Chief Michael Brunson is now Acting Chief Brunson effective immediately. Mayor Barrett held a conference call on Zoom Thursday night and said he was angry with the decision.“Chief Morales should have been given an opportunity to respond,” Barrett said.However, Barrett also stated that he understands where the frustration is coming from regarding Morales.Barrett said he was frustrated with the lack of effort he saw from Morales when it came to addressing the directives.The body also elected a new FPC chair, replacing the embattled chair DeVougas with Nelson Soler.Following the meeting, the commissioners walked out without answering any questions.“We have said enough, we have said enough,” said Wilson.Mayor Barrett said he will be working with the new acting chief to “make sure we are doing everything we can to reduce crime.”Barrett also stated that he will do what he can to restore the transparency within this process.This story originally reported by Rebecca Klopf on tmj4.com. 2804

MONROVIA (CNS) - Monrovia-based Trader Joe's announced Thursday that 1,250 of its 53,000 employees nationwide tested positive for COVID-19 within the past eight months, with two deaths reported in which coronavirus was suspected of being a contributing factor.The neighborhood grocery store chain -- which has 514 stores in 42 states and Washington, D.C. -- said the rate of its workers who have been infected during the pandemic is about 2.4%."We believe that the results in virtually all areas are below the average rates of positive cases in each community where we have stores," Trader Joe's said in a statement which noted that 95% of the employees who tested positive and completed a quarantine period have recovered and chosen to return to work.The company said that 24% of its stores have had no positive COVID-19 cases reported among employees, with 83% of its stores having had zero to four cases reported among workers.No further information was released."The health and safety practices and procedures that have been put in place, and that continually evolve, have been effective because of the great work done by our crew members in every store, every day. We appreciate our crew members' diligence and our customers' patience as we work each day to make our stores safe for everyone," said Jon Basalone, Trader Joe's President of Stores.The grocery chain noted in its statement that recent news stories have detailed the number of positive COVID-19 cases among grocery store workers and that it believes it's "important to our crew members and customers to share and understand what has happened in our stores from the beginning of the pandemic through Oct. 31."Trader Joe's said it has prioritized creating a "safe working and shopping environment every day" and ``developed and continued to develop effective procedures that meet or exceed guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to safeguard the health and safety of employees and customers. 1994

  

Multiple cell phones, scopes, two rifles and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition were found by police during a search of Travis Reinking's Antioch apartment. In an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, detectives searched Reinking's Discovery at Mountain View apartment and took a number of items. The two rifles were a CZ 452-2EZKM .22 caliber and a Remington 30-06.Police found hundreds of .22 caliber rifle bullets, 87 30-06 bullets, 30 .223 bullets, 29 .45 bullets and 43 .22 caliber bullets.They also found four cell phones, two scopes, a notebook, a safe and several computers. The affidavit describes Reinking's apartment as a one-bedroom apartment. Police said he has been living there for three months. Inside of Reinking's truck that was left at the Waffle House, police found two checks made out to "Travis J. Rankins [sic]." Also, police found an iPod and a Buck Knife with a black sheath.Assorted documents and papers were found in both the apartment and the truck, though what information they contain was not specified. Months after COVID-19 forced an unprecedented global shutdown that set the stage for historic job losses, things are starting to go back to normal.Unemployment appears to be improving – at least at surface level. The monthly unemployment rate declined in May and the economy added an estimated 2.5 million jobs that month.But there’s a disparity these reports don’t highlight – what unemployment looks like right now for people of color.In May, unemployment was highest among Latinx workers, at 17.6%. In the same month, Black unemployment reached 16.8%, its highest level in a decade. Asian unemployment also rose in May, to 15%.You start to see disparities when you bring in white unemployment. In May, it dropped 2.5% to 12.4%. That’s the biggest monthly drop – and lowest monthly rate – of any group.Experts say career distribution can help explain some of the disparities. People of color fill a disproportionate number of jobs in retail and hospitality. Those jobs were some of the first to be cut as the new coronavirus spread.But people of color also fill a big portion of jobs like grocery clerks and cooks. Those jobs, which are considered “essential” right now, traditionally don’t pay much and have been considered most expendable in past economic downturns.With Black workers earning the lowest median income of any group in the United States, experts worry any cuts to the currently “essential” workforce would have a disproportionate impact.Beyond the pandemic, numbers show Black unemployment is consistently higher than white unemployment. There’s been progress, though. The gap has been narrowing since the great recession and reached a low point in late 2019. 1686
