SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University has instituted new protocols to keep the coronavirus from spreading on campus.Dr. Luke Wood, Vice President of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, said they hired security to patrol the campus from Thursday through Sunday after hours, document policy violations, and send reports to staff who handle disciplinary action."There are real consequences now of our COVID-19 policies, and that can range from a warning, to suspension to even in extreme cases, expulsion," Wood said.He said they also have a wellness ambassador program they hope to expand to 50 personnel, "so that when students come on campus physically they are being greeted and welcomed to the campus. They're reminded of our policies around wearing face-masks, around social distancing."Wood said he wants to make sure SDSU doesn't join the growing list of colleges with outbreaks."We're doing everything that's within our power to make sure that we don't follow in others' footsteps," he said. "It's demonstrating we take this very seriously."Only a third of students (about 2,600) are living on campus this year, according to Wood. In-person classes have been cut from thousands to 202. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six San Diego State University students have been diagnosed with mumps in the last week, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services agency. All six of the students live off campus at BLVD63, an apartment complex not affiliated with the university. “These six mumps cases represent a small outbreak of this highly contagious viral disease,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The best way to prevent mumps is by getting the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR vaccine.”RELATED: San Diego State student diagnosed with mumpsAs a result of the outbreak, the agency will be conducting free vaccination clinics at the apartment complex from 3 to 6 p.m. on February 27 and 28 for BLVD63 residents and SDSU students wishing to be immunized. A third dose is also being recommended for anyone who lives or works at BLVD63. “Student Health Services (SHS) was able to quickly respond to this public health concern and worked to isolate these students, as well as provide initial information to our campus community,” said Libby Skiles, SDSU's SHS Director. “In collaboration with the county, our team is supporting the impacted students and working to proactively protect the overall health and wellbeing of our community.”The cases come amid an uptick in local cases in recent months, health officials say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday to extend a local and public health emergency in response to the coronavirus.The board cautioned that extending the emergencies did not indicate that the general public faced any higher risk of the virus."Today's vote reaffirmed the County of San Diego's decisive action on Friday to declare a local emergency and local health emergency was the right one," Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said in a statement. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Stopping aggressive behavior before it starts is one of the many goals for schools within the San Ysidro School District.The San Ysidro School District partnered up with the District Attorney’s office to teach staff members restorative practices in school. These practices help students deal with their emotions and understand their behaviors.Kids take a few minutes a day to express how they feel and address different topics like who they trust and why. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some San Diego bartenders are worried about the large crowds that could come into the area during the Fourth of July weekend.Seth Dominique said it's a tough time for bartenders. He works as a bartender in Pacific Beach, and he also has many friends in the same line of work that are all bracing for a high number of visitors for the holiday weekend."You can ask 10 bartenders, and nine of them will tell you the crowds are coming. The tourists are going to come. They're not going to stay at home," he said.Dominique said while many bars and restaurants have put proper social distancing in place, some customers don't always follow them. "At a certain point in time with alcohol consumption, people will -- not on purpose -- but they just stop listening," he said. "It's stressful because you're reminding people constantly, 'Put your mask on, don't move, don't stand in the middle of the floor.'"San Diego County has ordered bars that don't serve food to shut down. Restaurants can serve alcohol with food to people sitting at a table, and there is a 10 p.m. curfew in place."I really support the 10 p.m. idea; I don't think it's going to help this weekend because it's going to be a daytime crowd," Dominique said.Dominique said he and other bartenders are having to weigh financial benefits and health risks. He said he is young and healthy, so he doesn't worry about his health. However, he worries about getting the virus and possibly infecting family members who are older and more at risk. He started an online petition to close down at-risk sectors of San Diego for the holiday weekend.But with the Fourth of July weekend starting, Dominique doesn't believe it will yield any change but says it has value in giving many of his peers in the service industry a voice."Just be respectful, try to listen to your bartenders, try to listen to your servers," he said, "We're not trying to be hard on you. We understand your frustrations, but we're just trying to do our jobs. We're trying to stay open and get our economy going again."Bartenders have also started a petition in an effort to get bars to close on July Fourth. 2157
