SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of senators, including California's Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, introduced a bill Thursday to address health, safety and quality-of-life concerns at private military housing around the county, including Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.Feinstein and Harris joined Virginia senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to introduce the bill. The senators began drafting the legislation after a November 2018 Reuters report detailing substandard and even dangerous living conditions at Lincoln Military Housing's privately owned complexes, including mold spores, water leaks and infestations of rodents and insects. The report also detailed multiple instances of Lincoln's slow and lack of a response to tenants complaining about living conditions. Lincoln Military Housing runs most of Camp Pendleton's 7,900 housing units.``Service members shouldn't have to worry about the health and safety of their families while protecting our country,'' Feinstein said.``Unfortunately, many living in private military housing are dealing with hazardous conditions with little or no recourse."In addition to Lincoln Military Housing's large presence in the military housing market, military members and their families living on a military base like Camp Pendleton lack the same tenant rights as civilians living on private land. Reuters found that tenant rights are generally set by contracts between the military and private housing companies or landlords.Because of this, military base residents can't press local governments to enforce health codes or withhold rent payments until repairs are made. The senators' bill would enable base commanders to withhold housing payments until officials with a housing company inspect a safety or health hazard. Housing companies would also be required to pay to relocate tenants if a hazard requires them to leave. In addition to consequences for private housing companies, the U.S. Department of Defense would be required to launch an online work order system, allowing tenants the ability to view the progress of their work order requests.``I was extraordinarily troubled by reports last year of inadequate housing conditions at Camp Pendleton and visited with families living there in order to learn more about their housing needs,'' Harris said. ``This legislation is an important step forward ensuring that we're doing everything we can to provide quality housing for our service members and their families across the country.'' 2491

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old motorcyclist who led police on a pursuit through the Pacific Beach area of San Diego was hospitalized this morning with a life-threatening injury after crashing into another vehicle. The motorcyclist failed to yield to officers near the intersection of Garnet Avenue and Jewell Street about 11:10 p.m. Friday, and led officers southbound on Jewell Street, then westbound on Grand Avenue, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department. At the intersection of Grand Avenue and Fanuel Street, the motorcyclist split lanes between stopped vehicles and entered the intersection on a red light and broadsided a 2019 Toyota Prius going southbound on Fanuel Street, Heims said. The rider sustained a life-threatening brain bleed that required immediate surgery. The 62-year-old driver of the Prius and his passengers were not hurt, Heims said. The name of the suspect was not disclosed. 937

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A Utah family that ordered free coronavirus masks through a state program say they were sent politically-charged face coverings featuring a handgun and a controversial slogan.Christine Passey-Spencer of Rose Park says she ordered the masks through a sate program, "A Mask for Every Utahn." Since April, the campaign has used federal COVID-19 money to purchase more than 2 million masks from local and international manufacturers to limit the spread of the virus."I was just shocked," Passey-Spencer said. The two masks feature an American flag with a handgun printed across the front. The face coverings also feature the slogan "Don't Tread on Me," written below a coiled rattlesnake."I think the thing that bothered me most is that I knew my tax dollars paid for this, and this is very politically-charged speech," Passey-Spencer said. The Gadsden Flag — the inspiration for the snake and "Don't Tread on Me" slogan — was first used in the Revolutionary War. But in recent years, the image has been co-opted by the Tea Party, anti-gun control activists and white supremacists. In 2016, it was deemed to have "racially-tinged" messaging in some contexts by the federal government. More recently, the image has been used by people believing COVID-19 health restrictions take away their constitutional rights."We hope this is an isolated incident; that we just missed these couple of masks," said Ben Hart, who oversees Utah's mask program for the Governor's Office of Economic Development.Hart admits about 100 of the "Don't Tread on Me" masks were included in a shipment last month. Hart says the staff deemed them "inappropriate" and attempted to set all of them aside."We will not be using taxpayer dollars to pay for these masks. We will be working with the manufacturer and ensuring we do not pay for them," Hart said. The governor's office replaced the masks for Passey-Spencer on Tuesday. This story was originally published by Hailey Higgins on KSTU in Salt Lake City, Utah. 2008

SAN DIEGO - (KGTV) Southern California's recent earthquakes have demand for emergency supply kits skyrocketing. Ready America is a manufacturing company in Vista. The company sells disaster supplies and emergency kits to big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes. They are also sold on Amazon."Once people feel it, then it's real, and it's going to happen to me, and with Thursday's 6.4, there was a lot of demand. With the 7.1, which is the largest earthquake in 20 years, the demand has been unprecedented," said Jeff Primes, President of Ready America. The disaster kits include food and water with a five-year shelf life, a manually operated charging station, light sticks, first aid necessities, and more. There's even a pet carrier with emergency supplies for a dog or cat."From a one person three-day kit that starts at about retail, all the way to a four-person retail deluxe kit for about 0," said Primes. The company is also home to the Big Shaker Earthquake Simulator. It's used to show people what a 6.8 magnitude earthquake feels like and the damage it can do. "You really want to get under something sturdy, you want to get under a table such as this you want to drop, cover your head and neck and hold onto that table so that table doesn't jump around on you," said Trevyn Reese of Ready America. Reese said, resist the urge to run to your children."If you do need to get to your child quickly, it's recommended you get down on your hands and knees and crawl during an earthquake. Trying to run to your child right away is gonna start throwing you against all the hallways. There will be things falling down on you that can potentially cause harm, especially broken glass," said Reese.Another misconception, Reese says, is to run outside."It could potentially be harmful cause you don't always see those items that are around you," said Reese. The company also sells earthquake fasteners and putty to keep furniture and decorative items attached to the wall, so they don't become projectiles. 2022
