An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department is under investigation after his body camera allegedly caught him fondling the body of a dead woman.The officer and his partner were responding to a call about a possible dead body in a residential unit, sources told the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the incident.The officers determined the woman was dead, and while one officer went to get something from the patrol car, the accused officer turned off his body-worn camera and allegedly fondled the deceased woman's breasts, LAPD officials told the LA Times.Though the camera was turned off before the incident, it was captured by the two-minute buffer on the device, the newspaper reported."The department is aware of the incident and an internal investigation has been launched," LAPD officer Jeff Lee said, adding that he cannot comment further on pending personnel matters.LAPD Assistant Chief Robert Arcos told the LA Times the recording was "very disturbing."A source familiar with the investigation said the incident happened a few weeks ago but was found in a random check of bodycam footage. He called the incident "way beyond the pale" and "unacceptable" and said co-workers of the accused in LAPD's Central Division are furious.The case has not been referred to the District Attorney's office since it is still under investigation. The newspaper reported that the officer, whose name was not released, was placed on leave."If this allegation is true, then the behavior exhibited by this officer is not only wrong, but extremely disturbing, and does not align with the values we, as police officers, hold dear and these values include respect and reverence for the deceased," the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing the officer, said in a statement. BAR HARBOR, Maine - Towns spotted along the coast in Maine are commonly known for two things -- lobster and whale watching. But scientists have noticed changing climate patterns over the past decade, and it’s causing changing patterns with different sea life.“The Gulf of Maine has historically been known as an important place for whales,” Allied Whale Marine Director Sean Todd said. “That has sort of changed because of climate, and the Gulf of Maine is slowly shifting in a way that is perhaps less attractive to the whales.”“What’s really emerged in the last decade or so is that this ecosystem is going through some really dramatic changes,” Dr. Andrew Pershing with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute said.Bar Harbor, Maine, is a town filled with restaurants and shops, A lot of what you see caters to tourists who frequent the town in the summer months.“Bar Harbor is a really fun town,” Zack Klyver, a former whale watch tour guide with over 30 years of experience, said. “It is full of magnificent life.”“I like to think of it as the place all the hippies went when they grew up,” Todd said.Fall marks the end of the tourism season, and many places close up shop for the winter.“A vast majority of jobs in bar harbor are due to the tourist industry,” Jeff Dobbs, a local documentary filmmaker and operator of the Acadia Channel.“If you come to Bar Harbor, there are three things you can do,” Todd said. “The first thing is you can visit Acadia National Park.” Todd goes on to explain the other two things you can do are eat lobster or go on a whale watch.“We carry about 50,000 to 60,000 people whale watching each summer,” Zack Klyver said. He works in part with Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company.The people are super excited when they see whales,” he said. “In recent years things have changed and we’ve had to go a lot farther to see whales.”Three-hour tours have become five-hour tours, to allow extra time to travel farther to find where the whales are. Klyver said they had a record July this year with the number of passengers they saw, but it was in part due to good weather conditions.“Our sightings have gone down in the last couple years,” Klyver explained.While whale watch trips look for all types of whales, these were the stats Klyver shared with Finback whale sightings:2000 - 160 trips with at least one Finback whale sighting2010 - 155 trips with at least one Finback whale sighting2017 - 5 trips with at least one Finback whale sightingThose numbers have since improved.“In past years we looked at our sighting success rate and we were often at 80 to 90 percent success in seeing whales,” Klyver said.“This was a very difficult year for us. It’s getting hard to study these animals because they’re just not around,” Todd said. “It used to be that whales were very predictable here in the Gulf of Maine.”Todd explained he thinks the ocean is warming to a point it’s no longer an attractive place for whales to come and they are making other choices in terms of looking for food.One of the species choosing to stay north is the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale.“The Right Whale population was recently estimated in 2017 at being about 411,” Klyver said. There are less than 100 viable, breeding females left.Meanwhile, Todd said the Gulf is seeing more warm water species, including more Mola Mola sunfish.“The Gulf of Maine is one of the most rapidly warming patches of saltwater anywhere on the planet,” Todd said.Doctor Andrew Pershing agrees -- and had the science to back it up.“Over the last 30 years or so, we have warmed at a rate that’s about four times the global ocean average,” Doctor Pershing said. “Really since about 2010 this ecosystem has been going through a remarkable transformation where every year it seems to get warmer and warmer.”He said all areas of the ocean are warming by .01 degrees Celsius a year, on average.“We’re losing some of our subarctic species that have really been the center of the food web at the Gulf of Maine,” he said. “The whales are having to adjust on the fly to figure that out, and that makes it harder for the companies that have set up shop in a particular area with the expectation they can go offshore and quickly find the whales.”“What’s happening with climate may be kind of abstract,” Zack Klyver explained. “A fire in California, or a melting glacier somewhere that they hear about but for us it’s real. We’re seeing it everyday on the ocean.”And just like the season, the Gulf of Maine is changing.“A lot of people plan their vacations completely around seeing whales, they’ll come from all over the world,” Klyver said.Klyver and Jeff Dobbs are working on a documentary about the Right Whale, in hopes of bringing more attention to the endangered animal.“The plight of the Right Whale hasn’t gotten any better,” Dobbs said. “Their status in the world is very important, people don’t realize how much they contribute to the global economy.”Fishing and shipping are two things that are detrimental to the whales, according to Todd. “I am deeply motivated to save these animals. Deeply motivated,” he said.“We really have to rethink how we make decisions about natural resources how we make decisions about our businesses, we really have to look towards our future,” Doctor Pershing said. 5289

Call it a clever twist of fate, a shrewd power play, or simply comeuppance for one of the largest neo-Nazi groups in America.Its new president is a black man — a California pastor and activist — with one goal in mind."Change it, reverse it, and ultimately destroy it," James Hart Stern told CNN in an interview Friday.Stern says the former president of the Detroit-based National Socialist Movement, Jeff Schoep, turned the group over to him amid infighting by the group's core members, and to escape the threat of a lawsuit filed against NSM for its alleged role in the violent 2017 clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia.The NSM and Schoep, along with more than 20 other organizations and individuals including convicted murderer James Alex Fields, are being sued civilly by victims who were injured at Charlottesville.The lawsuit says, "The violence, suffering, and emotional distress that occurred in Charlottesville was a direct, intended, and foreseeable result of Defendants' unlawful conspiracy."Schoep claims he was "deceived" by Stern. In an open letter to NSM members, which he also sent to CNN, he admits to the "paper appointment" of Stern as president. But he claims Stern "convinced me that in order to protect our membership from the ongoing lawsuit, I should sign over NSM's presidency to him."'It's completely bizarre'One of Stern's first acts as president was to ask a judge in the Virginia lawsuit to issue a summary judgment finding NSM liable for conspiring to commit violence in Charlottesville. In his letter to NSM members, Schoep maintained his and the group's innocence, blaming counterprotesters for the violence, and vowing to wrest control of the group from Stern "in a court of law." The presiding judge on the case has yet to issue a ruling."It's completely bizarre," said Keegan Hankes of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups. He adds that white nationalists both in and out of the group were "completely blindsided" by the change in leadership.It's an apparent twist reminiscent of the Oscar-winning film "BlacKkKlansman," which told the true story of Ron Stallworth, a black police detective in Colorado Springs who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan beginning with a phone call. Eventually, a white colleague subbed for Stallworth during face-to-face meetings with Klan leaders."The difference in my situation is I was able to use my face every day," Stern said. "There was no deception here. The pair were housed in the same Mississippi prison when Stern served time for mail fraud, Stern said.Though Schoep wanted the ID, Stern refused to hand it over. Instead, they continued their conversations over the years, Stern said."When he and I talked, he made it very clear that I was not his friend," Stern said, adding that their talks intensified after the NSM faced increased scrutiny over the Virginia lawsuit.Stern said Schoep, who ran the NSM since 1994, initially wanted to dissolve the organization, but Stern convinced him otherwise."I told him if he dissolves it, someone else is just going to get it and re-incorporate it, rebrand it. I said if you gave it to me, that won't happen, and at least you will know who has it."'A hail Mary' or 'fraudulently manipulated'After more phone calls and conversations, Stern said he convinced Schoep to turn the movement over to him."It was a hail Mary of him trying to get out of the consequences of his actions," Stern said, referring to the accusations in the Virginia lawsuit.Schoep, in his letter to the NSM, said he was "fraudulently manipulated" by Stern, and that he has given the group's current chief of staff, Burt Colucci, control of the group's operations.Michigan public records currently list Stern as president.Stern says he knows the NSM could rebrand and start anew. But Stern's goal is to maintain control of the name and website."You can call yourselves the mother chickens of turtles, for all I care," Stern said. "But that reputation you carry as NSM, which carries fear and revere, it's gone."Stern hopes the NSM name, once associated with Holocaust denial, sits dormant on a corporate shelf long after he dies. But he doesn't want to begin this fight alone."I expect every minority, Jewish and black, which has been affected by it... to contact me and reach out so we can put our heads together and make sure that this is done productively," he said.While Stern shies away from comparisons to "BlacKkKlansman," he admits he'd love to make a statement by paring the NSM website with other Hollywood films."I'd like to see 'Schindler's List' ... and 'Amistad' ... stream on that website," he said.
