SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's housing crunch could soon offer a very small but mighty option for renters. They would come in the form of what are called tiny homes — which can be up to 400 square feet. The homes are easier to manufacture and transport than so-called granny flats because they are built in a factory, as opposed to on-site. The homes can be as affordable as ,000 but as much as 0,000, depending on size and amenities.RELATED: San Diego's first tiny house village invites people to live with lessDozens will be on display at this weekend's Tinyfest at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.David Martinez once lived in a tiny home to save money. He now sells them for an El Cajon company called homes to go. On Friday, he was showing an 84-square-foot home, which had a bed, tiny stove, mini-fridge, storage space, a wall-mounted HD TV, and a full bathroom.RELATED: For rent: San Diego backyard shed listed for ,050 per month"You'd be surprised, you get used to it," Martinez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Snoopy’s San Diego Comic-Con pop-up store is celebrating the Peanuts gang’s history with NASA and the Apollo 10 mission. In 1969, Apollo 10 used a lunar module to “snoop around” the moon’s surface in advance of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The crew named the module “Snoopy” and the command module “Charlie Brown”. As Gene Cernan, Apollo 10's Lunar Module Pilot once said, "No one remembers Apollo 10—until you tell them our spacecrafts were named Snoopy and Charlie Brown, and they say 'Oh! I remember!' " To honor the 50th anniversary, Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville created “Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10”, a mockumentary demonstrating the ties between the beloved cartoons and the space agency. The film, starring Ron Howard as himself and Jeff Goldblum as a self-published NASA historian, is available free in the Apple TV app. Astronaut Snoopy merchandise, including skate decks and finger skateboards are available at the pop-up shop at 226 Fifth Ave. Fans can also buy replicas of a Snoopy “All systems go” pennant. Astronaut Snoopy plushes, pins, and t-shirts are available at the booth inside the convention center. 1167

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University has suspended over a dozen fraternities after a student who attended a reported fraternity event was hospitalized this week with unknown injuries.SDSU President Adela de la Torre suspended Interfraternity Council (IFC) activities citing the "severity of the incident" following the alleged fraternity event Wednesday night, a statement from the school read."Given the severity of this incident, and as the safety and wellbeing of students is a primary concern of the university, SDSU President Adela de la Torre has suspended the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all chapter organizations under the council," an SDSU media relations officer said Friday.SDSU clarified Saturday that a campus fraternity is "alleged to have been involved in possible misconduct" in the Wednesday event.Prior to Wednesday, the school says six IFC organizations were under suspension and four were under investigation, leading to de la Torre's decision. The suspension affects all 14 IFC fraternities with more than 1,400 members. SDSU Headlines: Granny flats could make parking crunch near SDSU even tighterMultiple sources identified the student as 19-year-old Dylan Hernandez. A close friend says that Hernandez fell off his bed Wednesday night and hit his head, suffering a head injury. His roommate contacted her after the fall, and she came over to help put him back into his bed. She didn't know anything was wrong until the next morning, when she checked on Hernandez. She said his mouth was foaming, his lips were purple and his skin was yellowing. She performed CPR on him until emergency crews arrived.According to university police, officers were called to a residence hall in the 6100 block of Montezuma Road Thursday morning in response to a student needing medical attention. The student was taken to a nearby hospital, police said."University Police officers quickly arrived to the location of the incident and provided appropriate aid. The student was then transported to a San Diego area hospital," San Diego State University Police Department said.According to university officials, they believe the student had attended a fraternity event the night he fell off his bed.The school did not comment on the student's condition. No further information about the student or the incident was given at this time.SDSU Headlines: SDSU students frustrated with tailgate restrictions“Out of respect for the family and due to privacy regulations, the university will not be commenting further about the student, and asks that all respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time," the school said. The campus said that while under suspension, "the IFC and its organizations will not be recognized and all activities will be suspended.""The university will keep the organizations under suspension while it considers next steps," the school said.Campus officials say counseling services will be offered to students "to assist students on any emotional or psychological matters."SDSU Headlines: Woman killed in hit-and-run near SDSUSDSU said the suspension does not affect chapters of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the College Panhellenic Association or the United Sorority and Fraternity Council or their affiliates. According to the school's website, the IFC includes Alpha Epsilon Pi, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Epsilon, Kappa Alpha Order, Kappa SIgma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Theta Chi and Zeta Beta Tau. 3553

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo's 7-month-old endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo has finally emerged from her mother's pouch. The young "joey" has not been named, but is beginning to spend more time outside her mom, Polly, according to zoo officials.“The joey, right now, cannot get enough things in her mouth,” said Breanne Barney, keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “She’s constantly trying to eat leaves, greens, various vegetables, corn—even chewing on moms’ ears, tail, hands and feet!”The little kangaroo doesn't stray far from her mom though, as she learns to climb and maneuver outside of the pouch, the zoo says.Matschie’s tree kangaroos have an estimated gestation period of about 45 days and are about the size of a jelly bean when born. Once born, they crawl back into their mom's pouch and attach to a nipple to gain nourishment and grow. Tree kangaroos remain in the pouch for a few months.“Polly is an excellent mother, and consistently grooming her little one,” Barney said. “Due to their small population numbers, this joey provides a spark of hope for the future of this species.”The kangaroos are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of threatened species. There are less than 2,500 of the kangaroos in their native habitats of Papua New Guinea and the Huon Peninsula.Unfortunately, they are hunted by humans for food and trade, according to the zoo. The zoo's Matschie’s tree kangaroos came to the Safari Park’s Walkabout Australia in 2018 as part of a Species Survival Plan breeding program. 1573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Symphony's new bayside concert venue is set to open just as San Diego's summer begins.Once completed in July 2020, Bayside Performance Park will be the first and only permanent waterfront venue on the west coast, according to the symphony's latest post online. The recent post also offered a more detailed look at the performance park's layout along San Diego Bay.The venue, which started construction in September 2019, will replace the current facilities in Embarcadero Marina Park South with a new, 13,000-square-foot covered stage, six levels of terraced seating with 13 sections across, a promenade, flexible seating between 2,000 to 10,000 guests, new public restrooms, and other park enhancements.RELATED:San Diego Symphony to start bayside venue construction next monthSan Diego Symphony's new bayside venue clears last hurdle before buildThe stage itself will be covered in a sea shell-like structure with state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment. While noise concerns arose early on before construction began, the symphony says the angle of the stage's dome should direct most sound toward the audience and not across the bay toward Coronado residents."The venue itself is a work of art, with many technologies working in unison to elevate the music," the symphony writes. "With state-of-the-art sound, lighting and staging, the Symphony will attract bigger names and brighter talent than ever before."The symphony made a minimum investment of million toward the venue.According to the Port of San Diego, the park will be open to the public 85 percent of the year, while the other 15 percent will be reserved for paid admission or rental events. The permanent venue will also host four free public events every year. 1772
