SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help identifying the driver they say struck and killed a pedestrian in Mission Hills Thursday before fleeing the scene.According to police, the 57-year-old man was struck by the vehicle while crossing the street on the 1300 block of West Washington Avenue just after midnight. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.Based on their investigation, police believe the suspect’s vehicle is a 2001-2002 Hyundai Sonata with damage to the headlamps or windshield.Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division at 858-495-7805 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime stoppers is offering up to a ,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. 758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Peeps are traditionally a sign of Spring: brightly colored marshmallow candy that’s front and center on store shelves.Long after Easter, Peeps, made by the Just Born company, appear to stay fresh as ever, seemingly indestructible in their pastel packages.In 2002, 10News put the durability of the everlasting marshmallows to the test. Reporter Herb Cawthorne, photographer Richard Klein and producer Revelle Anderson put Peeps on camera.The inspiration was simple, according to Klein. “We were sitting around talking about the purpose behind the Peep,” Klein said.That led to an elaborate shoot at San Diego locations. The candy was shot, run over, thrown off a five-story tower, and stomped with a crane."During the entire shoot I chewed on a Peep. It never got smaller. I wondered how we ate them as kids,” Cawthorne told 10News in 2018.The 2002 video shows only children eating the Peeps.Adults may want to take notice. Peeps are gluten-free and fat-free.Since their inception Peeps have crossed over into other holidays as well, now available in a variety of shapes for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and the summer season.Peeps were first created in 1953 by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes, according to Just Born. The process was eventually simplified and brought the production time of the treat from 27 hours down to 6 minutes.As far as the company is concerned, they hope their product retains its freshness year-round. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police have identified a man who was fatally shot in the Midway District this week, prompting a standoff with the suspect of the murder in North Park.San Diego Police received a report of the shooting just before 11 a.m. Sunday in the rear parking lot of the 24 Hour Fitness at 3675 Midway Drive. Police arrived to find 27-year-old Alexander Mazin of San Diego suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.Despite medial aid at the scene, Mazin died at the scene.RELATED: Fatal shooting leads to standoff between police, suspect in North ParkFollowing the shooting, police were led to the intersection of 30th Street and Upas St where an hours-long standoff began.Once SWAT teams entered the apartment, however, they did not find the suspect — identified as 41-year-old Ernesto Castallenos Martinez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Donald Trump said San Diego "needs a wall" while he toured eight border wall prototypes along the county's southern border Tuesday.During his visit, the president stopped intermittently during his inspection of the structures to discuss the wall and, at times, slam the state over its immigration policies."For the people that say no wall, if you didn't have walls over here you wouldn't even have a country," Trump said at the prototypes. "And, by the way, the state of California is begging us to build walls in certain areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials are seeking the public's help to identify a young woman who was hit and killed on Interstate 5 near the San Clemente Border Patrol station almost two weeks ago.The Hispanic female, believed to be in her late teens to early 20s, was hit while trying to run across northbound I-5 lanes at about 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 9.She may have recently traveled to the country from Mexico or another Central American country, according to Medical Examiner investigator Tessa Lee.RELATED: Unaccompanied girl hit, killed walking on Interstate 5 near San Clemente border station"We are hoping that someone may recognize this young woman so we can identify her and notify her family," Lee said.A fingerprint search in the FBI and U.S. Border Patrol databases came back with no matches.The woman had brown eyes, long hair, weighed about 111 pounds, and was 5-feet 1-inches tall.
