CINCINNATI — Women who've gone through mastectomy know the experience is life-altering. There are a range of reconstruction options, or survivors can choose to "go flat."If they do that, they might only use a silicone prosthesis. But volunteers with knitting needles at Mercy West Hospital are providing a second choice."It helps you relax," Vicki Wright said.Wright knits on her porch in Ross Township, Ohio, her knitting needles quietly clicking away."Each pair takes me 3 to 4 hours," she said.Wright's not talking about socks or blankets. She's creating a lifeline back to normalcy for women who will get her work."I find them really comfortable," Sue Yates said.Under her clothes, Yates is wearing "Knitted Knockers" — soft, comfortable prosthetics for breast cancer survivors.They first came to the attention of Dr. Anna Sobolewski, a breast surgeon at Mercy West, thanks to a patient who had had a double mastectomy. That woman learned about them in a support group and chose them over her heavier silicone prosthesis."When I saw her back in the office for a visit, she pulled out the knitted knocker from her bra and said, 'This is the best thing ever,'" Sobolewski said.Wanting to give her survivors another option, Sobolewski went to the auxiliary."And...asked me if volunteers would be interested in doing a project like this," said Alice Wanninger, Mercy West's director of volunteer and auxiliary services.They got on it, knitting all different cup sizes with guidelines: They must be 100% cotton — so they're soft and don't irritate surgical scars — and they have to be washable.Wright said she loves the work. For her, it's a chance to use the knitting knowledge passed to her by her grandmother to help others."She would be pleased, too," she said. "It was passed down – a family tradition with love."Wright has stitched about 50 pairs since she started the work last winter. That's making a difference for women who've gone flat after surgery.Sobolewski said Knitted Knockers fill a void as patients go through a tough journey. They help with self-image after surgery."I think it's an appearance thing – it's just all in how you want to feel about yourself," Yates said. "How you wanna look."She said they're more comfortable and not as heavy as the silicon."Women helping women — that's what it's about," Wanninger said. (KGTV) — Coronado officials say lifeguards received multiple reports of shark sightings this week, prompting warning signs to be posted for visitors.The city said four shark sightings were reported between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, and the sharks ranged in size from 6 to 10 feet long. One of the sharks was seen by a lifeguard who was on a personal watercraft.The sharks were reportedly within 40 yards of the South Beach area shoreline.The city has posted signs warning beachgoers who visit the area.Naval Base Coronado also posted on Facebook on Friday that shark activity was reported in the Breakers Beach area, and closed water activities until further notice.Just one month ago, a 12-foot great white shark was seen off Coronado's North Beach area by a lifeguard paddleboarding about 100 yards from shore, prompting a 24-hour warning to beachgoers but no water closures. 910

CORONADO (KGTV) - Coronado is kicking off the holiday season in style, with fun for the whole family.At the Hotel Del, there's an ice rink, cozy places to sit by the fire, food, and of course a huge Christmas Tree in the middle of the lobby.On November 28th, there will be professional skaters and fireworks.Across the island Coronado Tree Farm is hoping to create a new tradition. CORONADO (KGTV) - The 200 million dollar project is being called the "Reimagination" of the Hotel del Coronado. The plans have been in the works for almost 20 years according to Coronado resident Felicia Bell, "17 years ago in 2002 when it was first presented to our community and the California Coastal Commission". Bell tells 10News the Hotel del holds a special place in everyone's heart, "my two daughters were married there".The beachfront resort just celebrated its 130th anniversary. The history makes it much more than a resort to the community, "this represents our history here in Coronado this is the key to the rest of the whole island" Kitt Walker tells 10News. Walker and her husband have lived in Coronado for years and say it's a staple piece for the community, "if it hadn’t been for the hotel del, Coronado wouldn’t even be here to speak of". In fact, Richard Walker gave walking tours of the resort for years. They both have ties close to the resort. They're looking forward to the repairs in order to preserve the resort for many more years to come. The first phase of the project includes the first of two underground parking structures. The entire project also includes adding 142 new guest rooms, a new Conference Center and repairs to the roof. The entire project is expected to be complete by the end of 2021. Bell tells 10News the construction could cause some headaches but they'll be worth it, "which will be noisy dusty dirty incovienent but at the end I think it will be a beautiful project". Many in the community say it's well overdue and a small price to pay to keep the Hotel del around for another 100 years, "if it hadn’t been for the Hotel del, Coronado wouldn’t even be here to speak of" Walker tells 10News. 1755
