We at USA Gymnastics have made a lot of progress in strengthening our athlete safety measures and putting our athletes first, but we know we have more to do. Smell is a primary human sense, key to our survival.Like a super-sensitive human nose, an experimental technology can "smell" and identify the chemical composition of a person's breath and then diagnose up to 17 potential diseases, according to the scientists who developed it.These researchers, led by Hossam Haick of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, say their Na-Nose, which uses nanorays to analyze breath, can identify Parkinson's disease, various cancers, kidney failure, multiple sclerosis and Crohn's disease with 86% accuracy. 554

Some motorcycles for the Tempe Police Department are now equipped with upright mounts for semi-automatic rifles.Sergeant Ronald Elcock said the department tested the mounts last year and decided to install them on eight of its motorcycles.In a high-risk situation, Elcock says motorcycles can usually get to a scene much quicker than patrol cars.However, until now, motorcycle officers were only armed with handguns.Elcock said that's been a growing problem, because criminals are using more high-powered rifles and weaponry."We don’t want to go into those situations where we aren’t able to keep the public safe,” said Elcock.Even though the AR-15s are highly visible on the back of the motorcycles, Elcock says they are secured with special technology.“There's a locking mechanism that would prevent anyone, except for the operator, to be able to get at the equipment,” said Alcock.Some worry about the militaristic look of the AR-15s mounted on the back of the motorcycles.“There are people that may be scared to see it,” said Elcock. "However when we explain to them the reason why we have it I think it puts them a little bit more at ease." 1153

Ron Helus had been set to retire in the next year from the Ventura County, California Sheriff's Office when, responding late Wednesday to a call of a shooting, he entered the Borderline Bar & Grill.It would be the last act of a 29-year law enforcement veteran described as hardworking and dedicated and, now, as a hero.Helus was among the first officers through the door at the Borderline. He died trying to stop the rampaging gunman, who killed 11 others in the attack in Thousand Oaks, California."He went into save lives, to save other people." Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said of Helus, his voice breaking."He was totally committed, he gave his all, and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero," he said.Helus succumbed to his wounds at a hospital, police said. SPRING VALLEY (KGTV) -- An hours-long SWAT standoff came to an end Thursday evening in Spring Valley. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began around 1:30 on the 10700 block of Jamacha Boulevard. Deputies tried to serve the man with a warrant when he barricaded himself inside his home. The man was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m., the department says. Several nearby mobile homes were evacuated during the standoff. It's unclear at this time what the suspect was wanted for. 522
