With many school districts in Virginia opting to start the school year with distance learning, one Hampton Roads social studies teacher shares his thoughts on how to help students have a virtually successful school year.Christopher True is a middle school social studies teacher who is gearing up for a new school year and the inevitable challenge that will come with it.True says communication is key to virtual success.“If that student is struggling with something, they may not be telling the parent.”He says parents should encourage their children not to be afraid to reach out to their teacher for help.True says the communication between students and teachers is just as important as the communication between the teachers and parents.He says parents shouldn’t be afraid of contacting teachers and describes virtual learning as “a community-led effort.”Schools will undoubtedly have expectations for students, even at home, but True hopes those expectations come leniency.“If you have a student whose parents work and [that student] actually has to go to daycare, they can't be expected to be in a class zoom at 10 a.m. if they don't have access to that stuff. And that's just going to be one of those things that we have to account for.”The test run of virtual learning at the end of last school year taught everyone new lessons, including that it takes time to adjust.While he’s banking on beginning the school year virtually, True is looking forward to connecting in the classroom once again.“There's no place I'd rather be. TENINO, Wash. – George Washington’s face may be on U.S. currency, but never on money quite like this.“We've created our own,” said Wayne Fournier, mayor of Tenino, Washington.It’s a town of about 2,000 people, halfway between Seattle and Portland. Using a printing press from the 19th century, Tenino is now printing its own form of currency, made of thin pieces of wood.“We're growing money on trees here,” Mayor Fournier said. “Literally.”It’s called “complimentary currency” or “scrip.” Here’s how it works: using ,000 from the general fund, the city is backing the wooden notes, 400 of them in all, and giving them to town residents in need.“We issue it out to people that have been affected by the pandemic and qualify financially,” Mayor Fournier said. “They can receive up to 0 a month.”In turn, people can spend the wooden money, but only in town, at businesses that signed up to participate in the program. Those businesses can then redeem the wooden money back at City Hall for real U.S. dollars.“I thought it was a really good idea,” said Juan Martinez, of Don Juan’s Mexican Kitchen in Tenino.The restaurant has been around for eight years, but the pandemic affected its bottom line and that of people in town, too. So far, though, the wooden money is getting around.“I've had quite a few people come in and, you know, they hadn't gone out to dinner in a while because they were laid off of work,” Martinez said, “and when they got it, had a few people come in and enjoy lunch with their families and were able to pay with the wooden money.”It’s a currency circulation that the mayor wants to keep going.“The whole idea is just to keep money bouncing around the community,” he said.The town has done this before, back in the 1930s, during the Great Depression.“It was a big hit and it saved the city at the time,” Mayor Fournier said.It’s an old lifeline they hope will keep working again in a new era.City leaders say they have been fielding calls from as far away as Spain, New Zealand and Japan from people interested in their wooden money. TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Hurricane Iota has battered Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast and flooded some stretches of neighboring Honduras that were still under water from Hurricane Eta two weeks earlier. The extent of the damage was unclear because much of the affected region was without electricity and phone and internet service, and strong winds hampered radio transmissions.Officials reported at least four deaths around the region, and said other people were unaccounted for.Aid agencies struggled to reach their local contacts, and the government said in a statement that at least 35 towns in the east and north had no phone service. Nicaragua’s telecommunications ministry said phone and broadband provider Columbus Networks was offline because of flooding in Bilwi.Preliminary reports from the coast included toppled trees and electric poles and roofs stripped from homes and businesses, said Guillermo González, director of Nicaragua’s emergency management agency. More than 40,000 people were in shelters.Iota had intensified into a Category 5 storm, but it weakened as it neared the coast and made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph) early Tuesday morning. The system came ashore as a Category 4 hurricane about 30 miles (45 kilometers) south of the Nicaraguan city of Puerto Cabezas, also known as Bilwi. Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has reportedly fired three “Ellen” producers amid allegations of a toxic work environment and sexual harassment by the producers. Variety and Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news on Monday.Hollywood Reporter reported it obtained an email sent to “Ellen” staffers by DeGeneres that producers Ed Glavin, Kevin Leman and Jonathan Norman were dismissed from the program.According to the note obtained by Hollywood Reporter, "I’m so, so sorry for what this has become. I’ve left this to be a well-oiled machine, and I realize it’s not a machine…its human beings."The note continued, "I apologize for anyone who’s feelings I’ve hurt. I’m not perfect. I’m multi-layered and I learn from my mistakes. I care about each and every one of you.
