SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County residents can ride to their polling places for free on Election Day, with county public transportation agencies announcing that Nov. 3 will be a "Free Ride Day."The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District will honor free rides Nov. 3 on all MTS and NCTD fixed-routes services, including buses, the Trolley, SPRINTER, and COASTER.Officials say the free rides will be instrumental in helping voters this year, with fewer polling places available than in prior elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic."Free Ride Day this year has a different purpose than in past years," said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, who is also the MTS Board chair. "We are holding it on one of the most important days for our country -- Election Day. We want San Diego residents to have every opportunity to participate in our democracy. Free transit rides all day long will help do just that."NCTD Board Chair and Encinitas Councilmember Tony Kranz said, "North County Transit District is a proud supporter of Free Ride Day because it's critical to our agency's effort to promote transit ridership and improve air quality. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council will take a look at the Riverwalk San Diego project Tuesday, a proposed transit-oriented neighborhood development along the San Diego River in Mission Valley.International real estate firm Hines has proposed the 200-acre project, which is intended to transform the existing Riverwalk golf course into a neighborhood as well as restore the stretch of the San Diego River that runs through it.According to Hines, if the plan is approved Tuesday, the company plans to break ground during the second half of 2021.The San Diego Planning Commission recommended approval of Riverwalk San Diego project on Oct. 22 with five in favor, one abstention and one commissioner absent.The Hines plan includes 4,300 homes -- 10% of which are planned to be affordable housing -- a Metropolitan Transit System Green Line trolley stop, 152,000-square-feet of retail space, 1 million square feet of office space, 100 acres of parks and new bike and pedestrian paths, including an extension of the San Diego River Trail."I think it could be something to set the standard for what transit- oriented development can look like," said San Diego Planning Commissioner Vicki Granowitz.The Riverwalk plan, established through a partnership between Hines and the Levi-Cushman family landowners, incorporates community input gathered over several years by the Hines team in nearly 100 stakeholder and community planning group meetings."We appreciate that the planning commissioners recognized the extensive community outreach and collaboration that helped form our plan and the care we're taking to create an environmentally responsible, transit- oriented legacy project for San Diego," said Eric Hepfer, managing director at Hines. 1754

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some people making emergency calls to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department on Verizon phones experienced problems connecting with dispatchers for part of the day Tuesday.It was not immediately clear what was preventing 911 operators from hearing certain -- but not all -- calls made on the Verizon network, sheriff's public-affairs Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.The regional law enforcement agency worked with the telecommunications company to determine the source of the problem, Stubkjaer said.Officials advised anyone having trouble being heard by a sheriff's dispatcher to hang up, after which the emergency operator will immediately call back.The connection problems were tending to go away on the return calls, Stubkjaer said.By mid-afternoon, the New York-based wireless carrier had identified and resolved the problem, according to Stubkjaer.A Verizon spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the issue. 962

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said.
