SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Unified School District said Wednesday that they are coordinating and organizing with student leaders for March 14th, when students from across the country are planning for a walkout.The walkout is in response to the Florida shooting.  The student-led demonstration is meant to urge lawmakers to pass stronger gun control laws.“We support student's voice,” School Board President Kevin Beiser said in news conference Wednesday. The protests are planned at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14th.  The district wants students to help plan events at all participating schools, which are mostly high schools, according to Andrew Sharp, a district spokesman.It will be up to those school communities to come up with a plan.  Sharp says, in general, the district would rather the students keep activities on campus in so-called “teach-ins” as opposed to “walk-outs but the superintendent has said, “students will not be disciplined for participation in planned peaceful demonstrations occurring at schools.” District heads will be meeting with student leaders from “Equity Coalition” on Wednesday, March 7 to hear their ideas on the protest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park is facing a setback after thieves broke into the theater.According to San Diego Police, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into the building between Oct. 17 and 19. The thieves ransacked two separate, secured structures on the property.A number of high-end television production systems, autographed guitars, studio cameras, and other items were stolen. “The doors were physically broken down,” said Steve Stopper, founder of Save Starlight. “There’s been a lot of vandalism and theft and they had to have been here a long, long time.”Stopper said his foundation has been working for five years to bring life back to the theater that closed down in 2012. The City of San Diego has offered support to his organization.Repairs were being completed after a tree came crashing down on the Starlight Bowl months ago, lifting asphalt in the parking lot and crushing part of the building.“This is definitely kicking us back to almost a starting point again,” said Stopper.Security cameras and alarms were turned off as repairs to the building were underway.Stopper said the items stolen were worth well over ,000. Many, including the autographed guitars, were set to be auctioned off at a gala next year in an effort to raise money for the revitalization project.“We need someone to step up and help us,” said Stopper. “We need new options for the future. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There's a stretch of Linda Rosa Avenue in Bird Rock that winds up a hillside and leads to homes with sweeping views of San Diego's coastline.The homes that enjoy that view, however, vary quite a bit. Some are older, smaller, and were built in the 1960s.Others are modern, and tower above the rest. Some refer to those larger homes as "McMansions," and wonder how they keep getting approved without any pushback from neighbors to protect community character."They basically skirt the reviews," said Dave Ish, who lives in an older home on Linda Rosa.READ?JON HORN'S ORIGINAL LOOK AT 'MCMANSIONS'Developers are able to skip the lengthy and public Coastal Development Permit process as long as they retain at least 50 percent of a structure's exterior walls. It's spelled out in city code. That's why McMansions are popping up in San Diego's coastal neighborhoods. But it turns out the city's 50-percent exemption creates even more flexibility for developers because they can get permit after permit with no waiting period in between.RELATED: Coronado neighbors worried about historic mansion turned transitional homeDeveloper Ben Ryan, of Tourmaline Properties, did that for an ocean-view home on Linda Rosa.In October, the city issued him a permit to add a closet and convert a garage to a carport, under the 50-percent exemption.  "Obviously it was just a temporary deal," Ish said. "Nothing was finished, it was this bowed out paneling, these windows weren't finished. It may have been a quick job, but it changed the layout of the home enough to allow Ryan to alter the design for a larger project.Ryan got a new permit later in February - again under the 50-percent exemption - calling for a second story, master suite, decks, kitchen, living room, dining room, and more. Today, the home is just half a wood frame - the closet and carport nowhere in site.
