OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A partnership is turning around the lives of young people at risk in North County. As 10News explores Life in Oceanside, we’re turning our focus to the success of the Boys & Girls Club. One of the young people helped by the program is 17-year-old Hunter Meyer. Like many teenagers, he struggled to find himself. RELATED: Mayor Pete Weiss talks Life in Oceanside“I became someone who preferred to sneak out late, get into a lot of trouble and run-ins with police,” said Meyer. Meyer said he started hanging out with gang members in sixth grade. As a freshman, he was kicked out of high school. Life became more difficult for him. “We were drinking and I came back just feeling like I’ve lost everything. I kind of lost who I was, you know, and then the next day I tried to hang myself and my mom and little brother walked in. That was kind of the turning point where I realized things needed to change drastically,” Meyer said. RELATED: Oceanside businesses continue to rely on thriving military communityMonths later, Meyer found out he was referred to a program to help at-risk youth called Oceanside Youth Partnership. It was started by Oceanside Police Lt. Valdavinos. “The people he was dealing with didn't have positive relationship with law enforcement and we weren't getting to them early enough,” said Ashley Sanchez, an OYP crime prevention specialist and mentor. Meyer was in the first class, spending two hours per week for 12 weeks to be redirected away from gangs. NPC International, which operates 1,136 Pizza Hut restaurants and 386 Wendy’s locations announced Wednesday it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.The company said that it plans to keep its combined nearly 1,500 restaurants open during bankruptcy proceedings. NPC International has a total of approximately 7,500 full-time employees and approximately 28,500 part-time employees spread through 30 states and Washington, DC.NPC International said that labor costs, increased expenses for supplies and the uncertainty due to the COVID-19 outbreak contributed to the company’s downturn.“These challenges have been magnified recently by the impact and uncertainty of COVID-19, and we believe it is necessary to take proactive steps to strengthen our capital structure, so we have the financial flexibility to continue to adapt to current industry trends,” said Jon Weber, CEO & President of NPC’s Pizza Hut division. “We also intend to use this process to continue to evaluate and optimize our restaurant portfolio so that we are best positioned to meet the needs of consumers across the country.”The restaurant industry has faced turbulence over the last few months.Just last month, the NPC International added 140 Wendy’s locations to its portfolio of restaurants.NPC International is the largest franchisee of Pizza Hut locations. 1341

OLDSMAR, Fla. — Deputies in Pinellas County, Florida arrested an 18-year-old for allegedly doing doughnuts on a golf course in a gated community.It happened on Sunday around 2:30 a.m. inside the East Lake Woodlands community in Oldsmar. Deputies arrested Luca Canalungo for criminal mischief. Deputies say he caused at least ,000 in damage to the course. He allegedly drove his vehicle on several areas of the golf course greens and damaged multiple turf areas causing significant damage to the 7th and 8th holes, according to an arrest affidavit. An 18-year-old arrested after deputies say he did doughnuts on a golf course. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man died early Saturday morning after being hit by a vehicle while crossing State Route 76, according to the Oceanside Police Department.The crash happened just before 1 a.m. on SR-76 near Old Grove Road.Police say a 2005 Lexus sedan was traveling westbound on the 76 when the driver struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the road. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.After hitting the man, the driver pulled to the center median and waited for police to arrive.“Neither Alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision on the driver’s part. It is unknown the pedestrian was under the influence of any substance at this time,” police said.The name of the pedestrian has not been released.
