SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott announced litigation today against opioid manufacturers including Purdue Pharma for what she called their role in the country's ongoing opioid addiction crisis.The federal lawsuit also names members of the Sackler family, the owners of Purdue Pharma. Elliott's lawsuit is aimed at forcing the defendants to fund rehabilitation and drug-education programs in the city and recoup the funds the city has spent on medical treatment for opioid abuse and homelessness caused by opioid abuse.Purdue Pharma officials could not be reached for immediate comment on the lawsuit.With the lawsuit, Elliott said she expects to join more cities, counties and states to form a multi-district litigation.``Opioid manufacturers have profited handsomely from the human suffering they intentionally inflicted through manipulation and deceit,''Elliott said. ``While San Diego will long deal with the destructive consequences of their greed, we intend to hold them accountable for funding drug treatment and education programs that will protect the health and safety of San Diegans.''Elliott's office plans to prosecute the pharmaceutical companies and the Sackler family for allegedly violating the state's ``unfair competition''law and for violating the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego announced Tuesday the completion of upgrades to 15 of the city's most accident-prone intersections. The improvements are part of the city's Vision Zero program, with a goal of eliminating fatal traffic accidents altogether by 2025 via infrastructure upgrades and traffic safety education. Circulate San Diego released a list last April of the city's 15 most dangerous intersections. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Circulate San Diego Executive Director Colin Parent held a news conference at the last intersection to be fixed, 33rd Street and El Cajon Boulevard, to discuss the improvements, which include higher-visibility crosswalk designation and audible pedestrian signals and countdown timers. ``This is all about making it safer for everyone -- drivers, pedestrians and cyclists -- as they navigate city streets,'' Faulconer said.``Making crosswalks more visible and adding audible walk signals are just a few of the simple yet effective ways we can make our neighborhoods safer.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The proposed .8 billion budget that San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer unveiled today includes the most infrastructure spending in city history, and prioritizes public safety, street repair and recreation centers, as well as initiatives to fight homelessness and illegal dumping.The spending blueprint also closes a million deficit without significant cuts to major programs, according to the mayor."We're continuing to put neighborhoods first by maintaining the key services we've restored in recent years," Faulconer said. "This balancedbudget will keep our foot on the pedal when it comes to fixing more roads, helping people into stable housing, keeping libraries and rec centers open for children, creating more housing affordability for working families and putting more police officers on the street to protect our communities."The budget proposal includes the largest recruitment and retention package in San Diego Police Department history, the equivalent of 390 miles of street repair and the highest level of library and rec center operating hours in a decade, according to the mayor's office.It also reserves 3 million for initiatives related to the Climate Action Plan, including 1 million to advance the Pure Water San Diego water recycling program. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres are scheduled to face an opponent at Petco Park for the first time in 2020 Monday, nearly four months later than planned, playing the Los Angeles Angels in an exhibition game.The March 26 start to the regular season -- which included the Padres opening day game against the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park -- was all wiped out by the coronavirus outbreak.Under the revised schedule which calls for the regular season to begin Thursday, teams can play up to three exhibition games. The Padres other exhibition game will be on Wednesday, also against the Angels, at Angel Stadium, in preparation for opening day Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park."I think everybody's excited to play somebody else," Padres first-year manager Jayce Tingler told reporters in a Zoom conference Friday. "We've been banging heads for a while. It's going to be really good getting to see another team and just getting to go compete."The Padres played 16 intrasquad games since beginning "summer camp" July 3.Like most sporting events around the world, fans will be barred from attending Monday's game under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.The game will be different from Padre games in past seasons for several reasons.Major League Baseball has instituted a set of health and safety protocols that will effect the game even before the first pitch. There will be no pre-game exchange of lineup cards.
